Early-week alternate Dylan Wu making magic at The American Express

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Dylan Wu is no stranger to going low as an alternate. Four years ago, the Northwestern alum earned a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour's Memorial Health Championship presented by LRS as an alternate, then proceeded to finish second. It changed his season and ultimately kick-started a run toward a PGA TOUR card. Now Wu has returned to alternate life; he finished No. 150 on last season's FedExCup, meaning conditional status and a lot of hours monitoring field lists to see where he stands. Things broke his way at The American Express. Wu gained a spot in the field Monday when Kyle Stanley withdrew. He has taken advantage. Wu carded 11-under 61 in Saturday's third round, matching a tournament-low score at PGA West's Nicklaus Tournament Course and moving into a tie for ninth at 17-under total. The event features a three-course rotation, also including PGA West's Stadium Course and La Quinta CC. Sunday's final round will be contested at the Stadium Course. Wu knew that magic this week could go a long way, and he entered Saturday's third round in a tie for 59th, squarely on the cut line. Propelled by a run of six consecutive birdies on the back nine Saturday, Wu moved within six strokes of co-leaders Jon Rahm and Davis Thompson into Sunday. He'll have an outside chance at a title and, not unimportantly, a great chance at accruing a good chunk of FedExCup points to improve his status for the rest of the year. Wu knows Saturday could be a fork-in-the-road moment in his career, and its significance isn't lost. Sunday could be, as well. "I thought I wouldn't get into (the Sony Open in) Hawaii or The American Express," Wu said after Saturday's third round in the Coachella Valley. "And there's no Monday qualifier. I ended up getting into Hawaii, missed the cut by one ... so that was frustrating, for sure. "You have to make the most of these opportunities and be OK with (the fact that) you might be first alternate come Thursday and somebody withdraws and you get in. So that's the reality until you play better and get out of that category ... Today, this week, it just shows that the work I'm putting in in the offseason is slowly helping." After moving to 11-under through 16 holes Saturday, thoughts of 59 crept into Wu's mind. He two-putted for par at the par-3 eighth, meaning he would need eagle on the 461-yard, par-4 finisher to achieve golf's magic number. Adrenaline kicked in, and Wu's tee shot found water left of the fairway. He didn't think he could reach it. He quickly recovered with a wedge to 8 feet and then drained the curling par putt, punctuated by a fist pump. It's his career low on the PGA TOUR, and plenty to build on. Wu was greeted off the final green by fellow TOUR pro Justin Lower, his teammate at last year's Zurich Classic of New Orleans; the duo finished T10. "I told other people, one of my goals this year is to have a later tee time on Sunday," Wu said. "Getting top-10, being in the mix, is something any golfer wants. It's been a while since I've done that. I know I'm capable of it. Just need to keep on working hard ... I know there are a lot of birdies to be made." With 11 birdies on Saturday, he certainly proved that.

Caddy in intensive care after fallCaddy in intensive care after fall

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Blayne Barber’s caddy Cory Gilmer is in an intensive care unit at a local Hawaiian hospital after collapsing and hitting his head in Waikiki last night. Gilmer was out some fellow caddies in downtown Waikiki after finishing dinner with Barber when he is said to have collapsed while sitting on a high-top chair, hitting his head hard on the ground in the process. He was rushed to hospital with swelling around the brain and has been unresponsive for the night and most of the morning. Barber rushed to Gilmer’s side as soon as he heard the news. “By the time I got there, he was unconscious, and the paramedics were there. Then I went to the hospital with him last night. And he’s pretty much just been unresponsive since then,â€ he explained. “He’s in the neurological ICU, a lot of bleeding and swelling in his brain. So, I went by this morning, and that was kind of the last update I had. He’s in pretty critical condition. His parents are flying in tomorrow.â€ To make matters worse Barber was caught up in the false alarm regarding a missile strike in Hawaii when he returned to the hospital in the morning, forcing him to head to lower ground. He returned to Waialae Country Club to play the third round with his brother Shayne on the bag, hoping the golf would take his mind off things. But the emotions got the better of him as he shot a 2-over 72 – dropping him to T68. Barber had considered withdrawing from the event but ultimately decided to play on given there was little he could do. “I’ve been gone from my kids and my wife for ten days, and between that happening to Cory and then just the emotions of facing your own mortality in that moment, it’s just been a heavy day for sure,â€ he said emotionally. “It certainly wiped me out. I was kind of out of it all day, just trying to push through and have something to concentrate on, but it was hard to focus on any of that. “I slept about three hours. That was about the hardest day of golf I’ve ever played.â€ Doctors were trying to contain the swelling medicinally overnight and had not yet taken a surgical route in his recovery. Barber said there was nothing he was aware of in Gilmer’s medical history that would be prone to him collapsing. “Seizures was mentioned (by some in attendance to the collapse), but as far as I know, he collapsed, and the head trauma is the issue,â€ Barber said. “We don’t know why he collapsed. I mean, he could have been dehydrated or any number of things. I don’t think there’s any necessarily clear answers at the moment.â€
