The First Look: PNC Championship

Tiger Woods and his son Charlie, 13, are making their third consecutive appearance at the PNC Championship. They’re seeking to go one better than last year’s thrilling runner-up finish that was highlighted by a record 11 consecutive birdies in the final round. The Woodses finished two back of John Daly and his son, University of Arkansas sophomore John Daly II. FIELD NOTES AND STORYLINES: Twenty major champions will once again head to the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando to compete in the two-day scramble tournament alongside a family member… Tiger and Charlie Woods are back. It’s been a busy stretch for Tiger, who hosted the Hero World Challenge in the opening week of December after withdrawing from the event because of plantar fasciitis. He then competed in Capital One’s The Match on Dec. 10… Three of the four participants in The Match are also playing the PNC Championship as the tournament’s “youth movement” continues. An increasing number of active players are choosing to compete alongside their fathers instead of vice-versa. That includes Jordan Spieth, reigning PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and Nelly Korda. Spieth is making his tournament debut alongside his father, Shawn… LPGA Tour legend Annika Sorenstam is set to tee it up with her 11-year-old son Will… John Daly and his son, John Daly II, are looking to become the first back-to-back winners of the PNC Championship since Larry Nelson won in 2007 and ‘08… Matt Kuchar returns to action, but this time with his 13-year-old son Carson after playing the last two editions with his elder son, Cameron… Lee Trevino, who is the only golfer to play in every edition of the PNC Championship, is back once again for 2022. The 82-year-old will play with his son, Daniel… A pair of former world No. 1s, David Duval and Tom Lehman, will play alongside their sons – Brady and Sean, respectively… Fellow Open Championship winners Stewart Cink and Justin Leonard will also play with sons Connor and Luke, respectively… Nick Faldo, who retired from his full-time broadcasting role with CBS this year, is back in action with son Matthew… A foursome of PGA TOUR Champions superstars will look to put a bow on their nice years on the over-50 circuit with Jim Furyk, Padraig Harrington, Bernhard Langer and Vijay Singh all playing alongside their sons… Multi-time major winners Mark O’Meara and Nick Price return to the PNC Championship… Finally, the ageless Gary Player will once again join the field at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club and is set to tee it up with his grandson, Jordan. COURSE: Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, par 72, 7,106 yards (yardage subject to change). Players will navigate a Florida layout with generous landing areas and wide fairways but boasting subtly contoured greens and strategically placed hazards. 72-HOLE RECORD: 117, John Daly/John Daly II (2021) 18-HOLE RECORD: 56, Davis Love III/Dru Love (Second round, 2018) LAST TIME: The Daly duo held off a hard-charging Tiger and Charlie Woods. The Dalys’ tournament-record 27-under effort was enough to win the PNC Championship for the first time. The Dalys shot a final-round 57, including birdies on seven of their last nine holes, to top Team Woods by two shots. The Woodses, wearing their trademark Sunday red and black pants, made a record 11 birdies in a row in the final round and came to the par-5 18th needing an eagle to put pressure on Team Daly. They could only manage to make par, however, and finished at 25 under, good for solo second. Team Woods went bogey-free over the 36-hole competition after making two bogeys in their tournament debut the year prior. Justin Thomas and father Mike finished tied for third in their title defense. HOW TO WATCH Television: Saturday, 1 p.m.-2 p.m. ET (Peacock), 2 p.m.-6 p.m. (NBC). Sunday, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (Peacock), 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. (Golf Channel), 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. (NBC)

AUSTIN, Texas – AUSTIN, Texas – Everything goes on the line on Friday with multiple scenarios still in the mix as we try to get to our final 16 who make it to the weekend at Austin Country Club. Four-man playoff anyone? With only 20 of the 64 players officially without any hope of advancing, plenty of excitement awaits. MATCH PLAY: Scores | Group Standings | Bracket | Group scenarios | Day 2 match recaps | Watch PGA TOUR LIVE, 10:15 a.m. ET FOR ALL THE MARBLES Henrik Stenson (37) vs. Jim Furyk (52) – These two veterans come together knowing the winner advances. Despite being around match play for decades the pair have never gone head to head before. Both took down fellow major winners Jason Day and Phil Mickelson to get here. Justin Rose (2) vs. Gary Woodland (22) – Woodland actually has the upper hand in this match given a tie would send him through, but it can only be one of these two make the weekend. FedExCup champion Rose fought back late to earn a half on Thursday allowing him the knowledge a win against Woodland will be enough to advance. FOUR-MAN PLAYOFF? Xander Schauffele (9) vs. Rafa Cabrera Bello (29) – Should Cabrera Bello beat Schauffele in this match, he might force his way into a playoff with the former Rookie of the Year. That playoff in Group 9 could contain four men if Lee Westwood finds a way to beat countryman Tyrrell Hatton (see below). Schauffele is guaranteed at worst a playoff if he wins. Tyrrell Hatton (35) vs. Lee Westwood (62) – Like above, Westwood can give himself a chance at a playoff if he can beat Hatton. Hatton can secure himself at least a playoff if he wins. If Westwood prevails and Cabrera Bello does likewise in the above match, all four will go to sudden death! Read about all group scenarios here: Tony Finau (14) vs. Ian Poulter (30) – A win for either man guarantees at the very least a playoff to advance against a potential winner in the Kisner/Mitchell match. A tie could be enough to force a four-man showdown in Group 14, but only if the above-mentioned match also ends in a tie. Kevin Kisner (48) vs. Keith Mitchell (56) – See above. Just switch the names. MUST WIN FOR TIGER Tiger Woods (13) vs. Patrick Cantlay (18) – After a loss to Brandt Snedeker, three-time champion Woods faces an uphill battle to advance to the weekend knockout phase. First, Woods must beat Cantlay and then hope winless Aaron Wise can find a way to either beat or tie Snedeker in their match. If Wise and Woods win, Woods advances. If Wise ties and Woods wins, he will go into a sudden death playoff with Snedeker looking for revenge. Read about Woods’ loss here. PRIDE ONLY Jason Day (12) vs. Phil Mickelson (20) – As the top two seeds in Group 12, you would have figured this match would have been more consequential to the tournament. Instead, it is a battle of two winless men perhaps looking for a little Presidents Cup mental edge. They are also mindful of FedExCup implications. Read about that here. DraftKings preview: Masters TournamentDraftKings preview: Masters Tournament

The Masters Tournament needs no introduction. But, if you’re new, the PGA TOUR heads to Augusta National for the first major of the season, The 85th Masters Tournament. The course is a par 72, measuring 7,475 yards and be putt on bentgrass greens. The field is set at 88 golfers, and the top 50 and ties — within 10 shots of the lead — will make the cut. There are no alternates here, so if players WD before the tournament start, the field gets smaller. There will be 18 former Masters Champions teeing it up this week. We did a Course Preview of Augusta National back in November, so make sure to check that out. Set your DraftKings fantasy golf lineups here: $4M Fantasy Golf Millionaire [$1M to 1st + ToC Entry] STRATEGY Last year’s tournament took place just five months ago, where Dustin Johnson (+950, $11,500) gained 19.1 strokes total en route to his victory, and much of the course will play the same. Tiger Woods will not be in attendance, but Brooks Koepka (+2800, $9,200) will be playing shortly after his knee surgery. Early reports say the course is playing much firmer and faster than November’s edition, and Johnson’s 20-under may be a thing of the past. Still, with course history and experience being such an important factor this week, we may see a similar leaderboard as we did in the Fall. There’s never a week where you should be blindly fading golfers who are in good current form, even this week. Last year, seven of the top 10 were ranked inside the top 25 in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green in their previous 12 rounds leading into the tournament. Still, course experience will be an essential factor, as it is every year at Augusta National. The players will also be without green books this week, and experience on and around the greens will be invaluable. The top five in Strokes Gained Total here since 2016 are Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy (+1900, $10,200), Jordan Spieth (+1150, $9,400), Jon Rahm (+1250, $11,000) and Justin Rose (10000, $7,200). First-timers will have an uphill battle this week, but it’s not impossible to do well with only having one or two starts under your belt here. Sungjae Im (+4150, $8,600) has been one of the best ball-strikers this year and contended last year, Collin Morikawa (+3150, $9,600) just won a WGC event and Joaquin Niemann (+5500, $7,400) is one of the best drivers of the ball on TOUR. All three have just one start here. Having all six players on your roster make the cut is a prerequisite this week if you want to win the Milly Maker. Username: ep3550(5) won the Milly Maker in November’s tournament, and he did it by rostering two players above $10,000 and four under $7,500. Of the top-10 finishers in DraftKings scoring last year, four were priced under $7,500 (Sungjae Im, Cameron Smith, Cameron Champ and Dylan Frittelli). Lineups must also have the eventual winner with such a high percentage of the field making the weekend. GOLFERS TO CONSIDER Bryson DeChambeau (+1150 to Win, $10,800 on DraftKings) No one has been better Tee-to-Green over the previous 24 rounds than DeChambeau. He’s the top-ranked player Off-the-Tee on TOUR, which will help on the four par 5s players need to take advantage of this week. The broadcasts will talk about his driving prowess ad nauseam this week. Still, people shouldn’t overlook the consistency of his irons and bentgrass putting, ranking 12th in Strokes Gained: Approach-the-Green and fourth in putting over the last two dozen rounds. His T21 back in 2016 in his best finish over the past five years, but he’s been one of the best players on TOUR since January, ranking fourth in Strokes Gained: Total. He’s won or done well on similar traditional American tracks like Muirfield Village and TPC Sawgrass and is the second-highest ranked playing in this salary range in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green over the last four rounds. Starting with DeChambeau and Rahm may be a trendy build, but these two are playing consistent golf and are the preferred plays in this range. Webb Simpson (+3500 to Win, $9,000 on DraftKings) You could find a reason to roster any of the players in this range. Brooks Koepka, for example, just had knee surgery but hasn’t finished outside the top 11 in his last three starts, with a runner-up in 2019. Still, Webb may go a little unnoticed this week, with narratives pointing to favoring the longer hitters. Augusta National is still a second-shot course, and although Simpson’s been a little off with his approach, he’s still one of the best iron players on TOUR. Webb’s last three finishes here read 10th, fifth and 20th. He’s only missed one cut since 2015 and has one of the best short games, ranking second in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green over his previous 24 rounds. Justin Rose (+10000 to Win, $7,200 on DraftKings) You should only consider Rose if you’re a believer in course history being important this week. He’s also coming off a WD at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and didn’t play at THE PLAYERS, citing lower back pain. Rose has had ample time to rest and recover, and he should feel right at home here. Since 2016, only four players rank higher than him in Strokes Gained: Total, and three of those golfers are above $10,000 this week. Caveat: if we hear murmurs about his back flaring up, we should pass. If we don’t, and all is clear on the injury front for Rose, he could be an excellent low-rostered player to pair with some studs at the top.
