Nick Faldo joins ESPN’s College GameDay in Montana as celebrity guest picker

For the second week in a row, ESPN’s College GameDay has gone to the world of golf for their celebrity guest picker. Following Jordan Spieth’s appearance last week at his alma mater in Austin, Texas, the trend continued with six-time major winner Sir Nick Faldo joining the crew on location in Bozeman, Montana. The storied player and recently retired commentator for CBS and Golf Channel calls Montana his home these days, filling his free time with fly fishing and cheering for the Montana State Bobcats. Without a major matchup between top teams at the FBS level, ESPN chose to send the show to Big Sky Country for the rivalry matchup between Montana and Montana State with pivotal FCS playoff implications. Faldo joined Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, and the whole crew on set in 5-degree weather, a record low for any College GameDay live show. Finding himself right at home back in front of the cameras, Faldo picked the day’s biggest games like USC over UCLA, Michigan over Illinois, Montana State over Montana, and Utah over Oregon, giving Utah-native Tony Finau a shout-out in the process. Faldo dropped a few more golf nuggets, taking the Oklahoma Sooners over the Oklahoma State Cowboys while telling Rickie Fowler it’s time to ditch his iconic OSU orange. After picking Stanford in their matchup against Cal, Faldo made a unscheduled prediction that Stanford alum Tiger Woods would win the upcoming PNC Championship with his son Charlie. The pair finished second in last year’s event but have yet to officially declare their participance in this year’s edition. With Faldo no longer teaming up with Jim Nantz to call golf action, fans of the Englishmen were pleased to hear one of the game’s most iconic voices back in their living rooms once again.

Viktor Hovland wins Puerto Rico Open for first PGA TOUR victoryViktor Hovland wins Puerto Rico Open for first PGA TOUR victory

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — Viktor Hovland won the Puerto Rico Open on Sunday for his first PGA TOUR title, chipping in for eagle on the par-5 15th and racing in a 30-footer for birdie on the par-5 18th for a one-stroke victory over Josh Teater. Related: Leaderboard | Winner’s Bag: Viktor Hovland “The only or the first person to play out here was Henry Bjornstad,” Hovland said. “I grew up kind of watching him play or following the scores online. So to kind of follow his footsteps and be able to win kind of the first tournament for Norway is really special. A bunch of my friends and just normal people from back home paying attention, which is a lot more than I could ask for.” Hovland overcame a muddy triple bogey on the par-3 11th with the late surge at windy Coco Beach. The 22-year-old former Oklahoma State star shot a 2-under 70 to finish at 20-under 268. “It feels crazy being here,” Hovland said. “It was certainly a day of lots of ups and downs.” Teater closed with a 69 in the tournament played opposite the World Golf Championships event in Mexico. He rebounded from bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 with birdies on 15 and 17. “Hats off to Viktor, that’s a great putt,” Teater said. “Actually, heard it on the radio that it went in before I saw it on TV. He’s a great player and we’re going to see it more often.” Hovland earned $540,000, a full TOUR exemption through the 2021-22 season and spots in the PGA Championship and THE PLAYERS Championship. “I was just thinking about trying to play as well as I could today and trying to get the job done,” Hovland said. “I hadn’t really thought about the perks yet, but I’m sure it’s going to be nice to get into some of the events that I wasn’t already qualified for.” Hovland shot a 64 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into the final round. He earned a PGA TOUR card last year in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals after winning the 2018 U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach, then sweeping low amateur honors at The Masters and U.S. Open. Kyle Stanley, Sam Ryder and Emiliano Grillo tied for third at 15 under. Stanley had a 68, and Ryder and Grillo shot 69. Martin Laird, a shot behind Hovland entering the day, closed with a 75 to tie for sixth at 14 under with Matthew NeSmith (67) and Ted Potter Jr. (69). Jhonattan Vegas shot 62 to reach 13 under.

Featured Groups: John Deere ClassicFeatured Groups: John Deere Classic

Four wins, 15 top-10 finishes, 97 rounds under par. That’s the combined career totals of Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker at TPC Deere Run, site of this week’s John Deere Classic. Johnson and Stricker will have plenty of time to trade course secrets in the first two rounds this week as one of the Featured Groups along with their other playing partner, Wesley Bryan — who, incidentally, is showing a similar love for the course after his first two starts in the event. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau is grouped with 2016 winner Ryan Moore in a Friday Featured Group that also includes Davis Love III. PGA TOUR LIVE will offer streaming coverage of the Featured Groups in the first two rounds starting at 8:30 a.m. ET (7:30 a.m. local), then will flip to afternoon Featured Holes coverage. On the weekend, Facebook Watch will provide coverage of selected groups determined after the previous day’s action. Here’s a look at the four Featured Groups for the first two rounds this week at the John Deere Classic (current FedExCup rankings in parentheses): THURSDAY Aaron Wise (25), Si Woo Kim (40), Harold Varner III (123) Three players in their 20s, two of them already winners on the PGA TOUR. Kim won THE PLAYERS Championship in 2017, and Wise won the AT&T Byron Nelson in May to become a leading contender for Rookie of the Year. Varner comes off a T-5 finish at last week’s A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier — his best finish at a TOUR event in three years. Tee time: 8:50 a.m. ET (7:50 a.m. local) Zach Johnson (54), Steve Stricker (136), Wesley Bryan (141) No players have been more consistent at TPC Deere Run than the duo of Johnson and Stricker. Johnson, playing in essentially his “home major, won the John Deere is 2012 and is working on a tournament streak of 37 consecutive rounds of par or better. Stricker won three consecutive John Deere Classics starting in 2009. Combined, they have 15 top-10 finishes in 32 career starts at this event. Bryan has posted top-10 finishes in his two John Deere starts and is a cumulative 30 under at the event. Tee time: 9 a.m. ET (8 a.m. local) FRIDAY Austin Cook (24), Scott Piercy (41), Francesco Molinari (43) Molinari comes off a dominant performance in his last start at the Quicken Loans National, which he won by eight shots for his first career TOUR victory (and second of his season, as he also won on the European Tour in May). Cook and Piercy have also won this PGA TOUR season – Cook at The RSM Classic last fall, and Piercy at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with teammate Billy Horschel. Tee time: 8:50 a.m. ET (7:50 a.m. local). Bryson DeChambeau (6), Ryan Moore (58), Davis Love III (207) The last two John Deere Classic winners are in the same group with a World Golf Hall of Famer. DeChambeau won at TPC Deere Run with a final-round rally to overtake Patrick Rodgers. Moore won in 2016 by reeling off 46 bogey-free holes, suffering just one bogey the entire week. Love is making his ninth start in this event and is seeking his first top-10 finish. Tee time: 9 a.m. ET (8 a.m. local)
