Updates from The Match: Tom Brady/Aaron Rodgers vs. Josh Allen/Patrick Mahomes

For the first time, Capital One’s The Match will not include any professional golfers, as NFL quarterbacks take the stage for Wednesday evening’s competition at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas. The broadcast (TNT, truTV, HLN) will commence at 6:30 p.m. ET. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady will team up to face the Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen and Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes. It makes for a classic NFC-AFC showdown, on the golf course. The 12-hole match play competition will feature a modified alternate shot format. All four competitors will hit their tee shots on each hole; each team will select a tee shot to play from, with the player whose ball wasn’t chosen playing the next shot. Team members will alternate playing that ball until the hole is completed. The Brady/Rodgers duo opens the evening as betting favorites. Brady looks for his first victory at The Match; he is 0-2 in two prior appearances. Rodgers is 1-0, having teamed with Bryson DeChambeau to defeat Phil Mickelson and Brady last July. Allen and Mahomes are each debuting in The Match. Keep it here for hole-by-hole updates from the sixth iteration of The Match.

Spieth’s latest career Grand Slam bid is a covert operationSpieth’s latest career Grand Slam bid is a covert operation

Based on the results for Jordan Spieth this season – he’s yet to produce a top-20 finish in 13 starts – it’s doubtful many people expect him to complete the career Grand Slam this week at the PGA Championship. Even Spieth recognizes he’ll be “flying in under the radarâ€ at Bethpage Black.  “But I don’t mind that,â€ he said. Spieth’s last career victory was the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. That gave him the third leg of the career Slam, leaving him only the PGA to become the sixth player to join that exclusive club. A month later at Quail Hollow, he finished T-28 as longtime friend Justin Thomas won his first major. At last year’s PGA Championship at Bellerive, he finished T-12 behind Brooks Koepka. Koepka now has as many major victories (3) as Spieth and will be one of the favorites this week as he seeks another successful defense of a major, having backed up his 2017 U.S. Open win with a second straight U.S. Open title last season. Spieth will not be one of the favorites. But even though he was not competitive at his hometown AT&T Byron Nelson, finishing T-29 at a Trinity Forest course in which he’s a member, he will take some positives from a week in which he shot three rounds in the 60s for the first time this season. “I don’t take the disappointment. I take more confidence than disappointment,â€ Spieth said. “The actual result doesn’t show really how well I played. We kind of had a tough draw the first two days and then still be — what was it 11 under for the week? — is solid playing on any golf course.â€ Spieth has struggled with his driver this season – he ranks 202nd out of 214 players in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee – but felt he made some progress on Trinity Forest’s generously wide fairways. He blamed some of his poor holes, including his two double bogeys, on mental errors. The only time he’s played competitively at Bethpage Black was in 2016 at the tournament now known as THE NORTHERN TRUST, the first leg of the FedExCup Playoffs. Spieth finished T-10 that week to Patrick Reed. How much of an indicator that might be in predicting how Spieth will play this week is difficult to assess. Obviously, his game is in a different form. Plus, that tournament was held in late August. “Probably different conditioned golf course than what we’ll see this time especially with the rain they’re getting,â€ Spieth said. “Probably just be a little bit longer. It’s a great track. I real like playing it. It’s a fun course to play and you really have to be on.â€ The PGA Championship’s move to May does give Spieth a chance to complete the career Slam before Phil Mickelson gets his next opportunity at the U.S. Open. Mickelson, Spieth and Rory McIlroy (no Masters win) are the only three active players having completed three legs of the Slam. Mickelson will go into next month’s U.S. Open at Pebble Beach have already won at that course earlier this season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. “It would be pretty cool bragging rights to try to complete the Slam before Phil,â€ Spieth said. “Not many people get bragging rights on Phil Mickelson. It would be pretty awesome to do.â€ And if Spieth does do it? Well, he’ll no longer be flying under the radar.

Power Rankings: Wells Fargo ChampionshipPower Rankings: Wells Fargo Championship

From the most valuable perspective, the Wells Fargo Championship begins the surge toward the FedExCup Playoffs. That perspective is playing time. Beginning this week and extending through the Wyndham Championship on the first weekend of August, 10 of the 13 remaining non-majors are open events. The two of the 10 that don’t reserve space for maximum fields of 156 are additional events that will host 132. In other words, for almost all PGA TOUR members with fully exempt status, and even for many with conditional status or worse, they can count on a full schedule the rest of the way. Of course, it won’t be easy, especially at Quail Hollow Club. In its post-major debut for the rank and file last year, it was the toughest par 71 in a non-major in all of 2-17-18. For more on the stern test, how Jason Day scaled to victory and other nuggets, scroll past the ranking. Among other notables, Tuesday’s Fantasy Insider will include Henrik Stenson, J.B. Holmes, Jason Kokrak and 2018 co-runners-up Aaron Wise and Nick Watney. Even as a par 72 since the inaugural edition of the Wells Fargo Championship in 2003, Quail Hollow challenged fiercely, so when Tom Fazio set it up to play as a par 71 for the 2017 PGA Championship, it came as no surprise that it established all kinds of new standards in difficulty in recent decades. After Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, North Carolina, pinch-hit as host of the 2017 WFC, Quail Hollow returned to the standard PGA TOUR lineup last year. The field averaged 1.132 strokes over par, the most on the track since 2007 (+1.280). Because it can stretch to 7,554 yards, the ability to move it off the tee will define the champion. At least in part. Quail Hollow is an equal-opportunity experience. Even though Day ranked ninth in distance of all drives a year ago with an average of 316.3 yards, almost 15 yards longer than the field average, he split fewer than half of his fairways and averaged just 10.25 greens in regulation per round to rank T69. The Aussie also finished a distant 59th in proximity to the hole on the 6,578-square-foot targets. Instead, true to his vintage, Day excelled with his short game. With only four whiffs inside 10 feet, he ranked second in conversion percentage in that range, strokes gained: putting and scrambling. Customary for winners who don’t stand over many par breakers with a putter but still capitalize, Day led the field in putts per GIR and co-led in putting: birdies-or-better. Overseeded primary rough allowed to extend to two-and-a-half inches in places won’t dissuade decisions to swing drivers. As Day proved, finding the shortest grass isn’t a prerequisite. In fact, of the 12 who finished inside the top 10 on last year’s leaderboard, eight ranked outside the top 30 in driving accuracy. Still, there’s nowhere to hide at Quail Hollow and there should be zero expectation to slingshot into the lead on the final three holes known as The Green Mile. Collectively, this par 4-3-4 finish averaged 0.864 strokes over par last year. That was one-fifth of a stroke lower than how it played for the PGA Championship a year prior. Each hole of The Green Mile ranked inside the top 50 of all holes all season on the PGA TOUR. Fittingly, Day set a new mark for winners of the tournament. Not only did he go 3-under on the trio for the week – lowest of any champion – he also went bogey-free. With inclement weather forecast, it’s possible that the Champion bermudagrass greens won’t touch the intended 12 feet on the Stimpmeter, but anything is possible in this part of the country at this time of year. Daytime highs will eclipse 80 degrees and the wind might kick up a bit, but it won’t play a role often in club selection.
