Michael Herrera edges stellar field to win APGA TOUR at TPC Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – Veteran standout Michael Herrera picked up his second APGA Tour win in 16 months with a decisive 18th-hole birdie to win the APGA Tour at TPC Scottsdale title Tuesday. Winner of the season-opening Crossings at Carlsbad APGA Tour event in January of 2021, Herrera obtained the sponsorship support for Pro Football Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott later in the year and earned conditional status on PGA TOUR Canada earlier this month. Herrera shot a three-under 68 today, capping the round with a 30-foot birdie putt that he needed to pull into the lead at four-under 138. Daniel Augustus of Bermuda finished second at 3-under 139. Third place was shared by Kendall Hodges of Las Vegas, Rovonta Young of Huntsville, Alabama, and Tommy Schaff of Ridgeland, South Carolina, who finished at 140 during two days on the par 71, 7,115-yard layout. Notah Begay, the prominent golf broadcaster and four-time PGA TOUR winner, brought special attention to the tournament by testing his skills against the field and finished 20th. “I’ve been playing consistently well,” said Herrera, a resident of Moreno Valley, California. “I felt I left a lot out there yesterday, so knew I could roll in a few putts today and I did.” Herrera finished 27th at PGA TOUR Canada Q-School earlier this month, earning conditional status that provides Monday qualifying opportunities. He is one of several members of the APGA Tour Player Development Program and is in the field for next month’s Billy Horschel APGA Tour Invitational presented by Cisco at TPC Sawgrass. “It’s a great opportunity to play a great golf course,” Herrera added. “A win at the Billy Horschel Invitational can change your year.” Herrera also bested some of the APGA Tour top guns, including Tim O’Neal who finished tied for sixth with Jordan Bohannon. Other members of the Player Development Program headed to the May 6-7 Horschel Invitational are Ryan Alford, Aaron Beverly, Marcus Byrd, Mulbe Dillard, Kamaiu Johnson, Mahindra Lutchman, Willie Mack, Trey Valentine, Davin White, Andrew Walker and Rovonta Young. The APGA Tour was established in 2010 with the mission to bring greater diversity to the game of golf by hosting and operating professional golf tournaments, player development programs, mentoring programs, and introducing the game to inner-city young people. The tour has grown from seven events with $200,000 in prize money in 2020 and 14 events with over $400,000 in prize money in 2021, and now 18 events with over $700,000 in prize money in 2022.

Sleeper Picks: the Memorial Tournament presented by WorkdaySleeper Picks: the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday

Alex Noren (+275 for a Top 20) … Golf fans in the United States can be spoiled by international talent, specifically among the contingent that pulls double duty on the DP WORLD Tour. For every household name from Europe, there are many more who have tried once and haven’t returned. It’s even more challenging without picking off a PGA TOUR victory at some point, but the Swede has cracked the code. Now in his fifth consecutive season on this circuit, he’s all but desisted from jetting to his home continent for playing opportunities. It’s in part due to drifting outside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking as the 2019-20 season began, but he’s also connected with consistently strong form. In a phrase, less is more. The 39-year-old now is creeping up on the top 50 once more (at 56th) thanks most recently five top 20s in his last 10 starts. He’s also cashed twice in three tries at Muirfield Village with a personal-best T13 last year. Lanto Griffin (+500 for a Top 20) … When you associate his surname to these parts, he’s not the Griffin who rushes to mind. In fact, he’d have to prevail probably in at least three consecutive editions of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday to begin to share even a fraction of a breath with the default reference to Archie Griffin. The former running back at Ohio State remains the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy (1974, 1975). But hey, Lanto didn’t pick that fight, and he’d be elated with even one title at Muirfield Village where he’s making his third straight appearance. He’s gathered momentum of late with a four-bagger that was sparked by a T15 in Mexico and a T6 in the testing conditions at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. His skill set of improved play closer to the cup is in direct correlation to this week’s challenge. Pat Perez (+400 for a Top 20) … At 104th in the FedExCup, the 46-year-old is poised to qualify for the Playoffs for the 14th time in 15 opportunities. The only time he’s missed is when he sat out the last two-thirds of the 2015-16 season to recover from surgery on his left shoulder. He set up his latest chance with consecutive top 10s on the West Coast Swing where he’s always done damage, but he’s missed only two of 10 cuts since. Now he’s fresh off a stretch-best T12 at Colonial where he led the field in total distance of putts converted. Since 2008, he’s 10-for-10 with four top 25s at Muirfield Village. Stretching for a top 20 now is aggressive, so consider a complementary consideration for a top 40. C.T. Pan (+333 for a Top 20) … Although it can stretch beyond 7,500 yards, Muirfield Village is equal opportunity for all performers. One does not need to send it off the tee to contend, or even prevail, but the 30-year-old holds his own with the driver despite ranging to just 5’6”. He hasn’t sniffed the leaderboard in three prior appearances, but he hasn’t slammed his trunk – sorry, it’s 2022 – depressed the button on the key fob to lower the liftgate, either. Now, he’d have his hands full with the monster pair of par 4s to close out a final round for victory, but reduce your expectation for a top 40, anyway. Since finishing ninth at Riviera three months ago, he’s 8-for-9 with four top 40s and three others for which he was exactly one shot too many to finish inside that bubble. Danny Willett (+650 for a Top 20) … His membership exemption for winning the 2016 Masters expires in just two months, and he’s currently 155th in the FedExCup, so we’re going to learn, as will he, what the 34-year-old Englishman is made of with the clock ticking. Muirfield Village is positioned to help as he’s perfect in three trips with a scoring average of exactly 72 (that includes an 82 among the 12 rounds). He’s not quite simmering upon arrival but he’s cashed in eight of his last 10 starts worldwide, including a T12 at the Masters and a T16 at the British Masters that he hosted four weeks ago. Romo enjoys hot start with 2-under 70 at Safeway OpenRomo enjoys hot start with 2-under 70 at Safeway Open

NAPA, Calif. – Tony Romo didn’t come close to making the cut in his first three PGA TOUR starts, twice at the Corales Punta Cana Resort & Club Championship and once at the AT&T Byron Nelson. Still, as was the case when he quarterbacked the Dallas Cowboys, he was undeterred by a little adversity. “Same thing I did in football, Romo said after birdies on his last two holes for a 2-under 70 at Silverado, his best round on TOUR by four shots. “You just start from the beginning. You’re not very good, not very good, and then all of a sudden you make the leap somewhere and all of a sudden you can be more efficient and you can do things a little bit better. With the afternoon wave still out on the course, Romo was tied for 24th place and squarely in contention to make his first cut. He made 122 feet of putts and beat his playing partners Beau Hossler (74) and Michael Gellerman (76) with ease. Related: Leaderboard “He played well, so that was fun to watch, and he’s a good guy, said Gellerman, who calls himself a fan of the Minnesota Vikings. That’s the team that will play the Chicago Bears in Chicago on Sunday, a game Romo is scheduled to call for CBS, his day job. If he makes the cut, he has said he will stay at Silverado to finish out the tournament. Few observers gave Romo much of a chance to make the cut. When he shot 79-80 at the Corales last season, he missed the cut by a wide margin and beat only one pro who did not withdraw. He shot 77-82 there the year before. His best result came at the AT&T Byron Nelson on his home course, but scores of 76-74 weren’t even close to good enough to play into the weekend. “It’s embarrassing to stink, Romo said after his five-birdie, three-birdie round at Silverado on Thursday. “I stunk a lot, so just trying to continue to improve and get better. His highly public failures told him what he wasn’t good at, especially putting, but he worked hard with instructor Chris O’Connell on every aspect of his game. He’d seen that hard work pay off in his scores at home in Dallas, but executing in a TOUR event is another matter. “Just the scoring back home and in practice sessions have shown that I’ve done things a little better, Romo said. “So that makes you excited to come out and test your game. I think it’s rewarding on a tough golf course to come out here and do that.
