Rickie Fowler hits all 18 greens, shoots 66 at Farmers Insurance Open

SAN DIEGO – Rickie Fowler played Wednesday alongside the player who sent the PGA TOUR scrambling for extra clubhead speed, but slowing down was key for him in his 6-under 66 at Torrey Pines’ North Course. Fowler hit all 18 greens in a bogey-free round that left him in a tie for fifth, three shots behind leader Billy Horschel. It’s the fourth round of his career where Fowler has hit all 18 greens in regulation. It may be tempting to swing all-out when playing alongside Bryson DeChambeau, as Fowler did Wednesday, but Fowler’s controlled approach was key, even if it resulted in shorter shots. “I felt like I was swinging at about 60% and took about three hours to get to the top of my backswing,” he said. “That would roughly be the feelings of it. Just tried to be … a lot more deliberate, not trying to rush things.” Patience has been key for Fowler in the last few years. It’s been nearly three years since his last PGA TOUR win, at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Once ranked as high as fourth in the Official World Golf Ranking, he started this week at No. 101. He missed the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time in his career last year. While DeChambeau, the TOUR’s longest hitter in each of the last two seasons, was swinging out of his shoes Wednesday, Fowler was focused on being slow and steady. He said he would add speed once he was comfortable with his swing changes. “I’m trying to stay a bit more controlled. So for now I just need to make sure the club’s at least in a little better spot and everything’s working together a little bit better,” he said. “Just trying to make sure we are doing things right.” This is Fowler’s second start of the calendar year as the PGA TOUR swings through his native Southern California. He grew up an hour away in Murrieta, California, and the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines was his first major. He missed the cut at last week’s The American Express, his first event in nearly 2 ½ months, citing poor iron play that didn’t allow him to keep up with the low scores that are requisite out there. “It was my iron play that really kind of killed me,” he said. “And a place like that out in the desert, it’s not really good to be putting for par, you’ve got to be making birdies out there. I think we turned it around all right and off to a little better start this week.” This isn’t the first time this season that Fowler has seen flashes of his old self. He arrived at Torrey Pines ranked 55th in the FedExCup after a third-place finish at THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT in the fall. It was his best finish since the 2019 season, and he called it one of the best ball-striking performances of his career. Fowler played twice more before his first child, a daughter named Maya, was born in November. Becoming a parent meant he had to be more efficient with his practice time during the holidays, but parenthood also adds perspective that can be especially helpful during trying times. “I feel like things are very close and in a good spot,” he said, “but heading in the right direction, too.” Perhaps slowing down has sped up Fowler’s progress.

Regular season stars shine in opening round of THE NORTHERN TRUSTRegular season stars shine in opening round of THE NORTHERN TRUST

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Led by former champion Dustin Johnson it was all systems go for a number of the regular season’s best players in the opening round at THE  NORTHERN TRUST. The marquee group of 20-time PGA TOUR winner Johnson, former PLAYERS and U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and Spanish star Jon Rahm – playing together based on their FedExCup position – scorched Liberty National. With the TOUR Championship already secured the trio might have been wary of a little complacency slipping into their game but they needn’t have worried. Johnson – who finished seventh in the regular season – posted an impressive 8-under 63 to sit just one shot behind Troy Merritt’s early lead. Rahm, 10th in the regular season, opened with a 64 while Simpson (ninth) kickstarted his Playoff run with a round of 65. RELATED: What you need to know for FedExCup Playoffs | Woods starts slow | Merritt moves off bubble “Everything looked easy and we fed off each other. One of us was always close and we were trying to get it closer than the next person and making putts,â€ Rahm said of his group dynamic. “There was a good vibe in the group going on. It’s a little bit easier because the greens are so soft. Dustin finished with almost five in a row … We definitely fed off each other.â€ Johnson was the champion of THE NORTHERN TRUST in 2011 and 2017 on different courses. He wasn’t content with his start, heading straight to the range afterwards. Since having won the World Golf Championships – Mexico Championship in February and finishing runner-up at the Masters in April and the PGA Championship in May, Johnson’s results have trailed off. A pair of T-20s are his best in his last five starts. “I’ve been working pretty hard on my game the last month or so. Finally felt like it’s coming around. Obviously today was a really good score, but just want to make sure I keep it that way,â€ Johnson said of his decision to hit the practice range. “Any time you shoot 8 under, no matter what golf course, you know you did everything well. Today I drove it well and hit a lot of really good iron shots. Rolled the putter nicely. “Every Playoff event is big, and you really want to get off to a good start in any of them.â€ While not playing with the others Rory McIlroy – who is second in the FedExCup – also started hot with a 65 of his own. The quartet are looking to put pressure on FedExCup leader Brooks Koepka who opened with a relatively pedestrian 1-under 70. McIlroy had to watch Koepka go past him in the final round of the recent World Golf Championships – FedEx St. Jude Invitational but this time it was the American getting lapped by his playing partner. “You’ve got to expect the guys like DJ or Rahm or any of the guys that are in the top 10 of the standings are going to come and play well,â€ McIlroy said. “I’m pleased with the start. Bogeyed the first hole, which was the 10th, but played really well after that. Played 7 under from there on in with no bogeys. “I saw some better iron shots than I did in Memphis. I drove it just as good. I putted nicely. It’s so soft out there, you need to shoot low scores this week to have a chance … so just going to try to have to keep the foot down. “It’s definitely a golf course that you’re going to have to keep being aggressive on this week.â€ The player at the top of the standings following next week’s BMW Championship will start the TOUR Championship at 10 under. That player will have between a two and 10 shot lead over the field that is staggered based on FedExCup position. Any of the current top 10 is likely to project to top spot with a victory in New Jersey.

Power Rankings: Valspar ChampionshipPower Rankings: Valspar Championship

Now that we’ve learned how THE PLAYERS Championship delivered in its return to March, it’s time to see how those who competed in the PGA TOUR’s flagship event turn over – or is it hang over? – for the Valspar Championship. As of midday Monday, 87 of the 144 in the field at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club’s Copperhead Course made the trip from TPC Sawgrass. While there will be a more casual feel in the anchor leg of the Florida Swing outside Tampa, no one can let his guard down on what’s been the toughest or second-toughest par 71 among all non-majors in each of the last six seasons. No changes have been made to Copperhead since last year’s edition, but scroll past the ranking for analysis of what the field of 144 can expect, how Paul Casey extended a theme and more. Gary Woodland, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson, Branden Grace and Steve Stricker will be among the notables covered in Tuesday’s Fantasy Insider. While Innisbrook Resort is only 165 air miles southwest of TPC Sawgrass, it might as well be on the other side of the planet. The 7,340-yard test is the unforgiving examination amid uncommon elevation change in the Sunshine State as compared to the risk-reward at essentially sea level of its predecessor on the schedule. In its third spin post-renovation, the Copperhead Course held firm with a scoring average of 71.968 last year. There’s just nowhere to hide or gain traction. Consider that among all courses in 2017-18, it ranked inside the top 15-most challenging in distance of all drives (fourth), fairways hit (15th), greens in regulation (third), proximity to the hole (T11) and putting: birdies-or-better (fifth). Even though there are four par 5s, they surrendered a stingy 4.78 scoring average, sixth-highest of all courses. The par 4s also ranked sixth (at 4.13), while the quintet of par 3s were no bargain, either, at 3.13, good for a tie for the 11th-hardest set. All of these analytics align with its recent history. If there’s a soft spot on the property, it’s around and on greens that are prepped to touch 12 feet on the Stimpmeter. Since the switch in 2016 to TifEeagle bermuda, which is overseeded for the tournament, Copperhead has been a pushover, at least relatively speaking, in terms of scrambling for pars and putting inside 10 feet. The trend enhances the value of hitting greens in regulation. It also rewards those with terrific short games. Adam Hadwin is known for being one of the best putters on TOUR, so it made sense when he broke through for his first title here in 2017. He finished the week inside the top 10 in both scrambling and bogey avoidance. Paul Casey defends this week after a similar performance. The Englishman ranked T68 in driving accuracy, T30 in piling up scoring opportunities and 15th in strokes gained: putting, but he made the putts count when necessary, finishing third in scrambling and co-leading the field in bogey avoidance. Embedded in Copperhead’s tip-to-tail toughness is The Snake Pit. It consists of the par-4 16th hole, the par-3 17th and the par-4 18th. Since the tournament debuted (in the fall) in 2000, none of the holes have averaged under par in any edition. Last year’s aggregate scoring average for the trio was 11.607. Casey scored 1 over for the week en route to his one-stroke victory at just 10-under 274. With overseeded rough extending three inches and higher, the moral of this matter is it would be poor to plan for a slingshot of a victory at the finish line. This is all about climbing the leaderboard early and course management coming home. This week’s experience should resemble what we already know. Aside from the occasional freshening but manageable breezes, Mother Nature is going to cooperate throughout. Gradually increasing daytime highs into the upper 70s are expected. A system that will bring rain is on the horizon, but it might not arrive until the tournament concludes.
