Power Rankings: Butterfield Bermuda Championship

The images that recently have circulated on social media of Tiger Woods standing and walking without crutches have served as a positive update on the 82-time PGA TOUR winner who suffered serious leg injuries in a automobile crash on Feb. 23. The timing of this week’s ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP follows nicely because Woods’ title at the inaugural edition in 2019 is his most recent. This also marks the first time that the tournament returns to Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba, Japan. Because of the pandemic, the second staging was at Sherwood Country Club in California in 2020. Of course, Woods remains unable to give it a go at Narashino, but a field of 78 has assembled nonetheless. Scroll past the projected contenders for details on the construct of the field, a breakdown of the host course and more. Tuesday’s Fantasy Insider will include reviews of Kramer Hickok, Hank Lebioda, David Hearn and Ryan Armour, each of whom recorded a top 20 in both prior editions of the tournament. Gay always has been a player who’d contend in a driving contest … if accuracy was rewarded. For a long, long time, he was among the leaders in fairways hit on the PGA TOUR. So, when the wind blows on shorter courses, as it can at Hilton Head and El Camaleón – to name two other sites where Gay has prevailed – he’d seem to have as good a chance as anyone. Mitigating the potential of danger on approach with precision off the tee is one way to navigate a lucrative career at the highest level. However, like all other multiple winners, Gay isn’t a one-trick talent. His co-equal strength is the putter. It’s the reason why he’s won shootouts and, notably, the 2009 RBC Heritage by 10 strokes. So, on tracks on which longer hitters must downshift, his possibilities rise by comparison. Port Royal is a par 71 with three par 5s, but it tips at just 6,828 yards. Outside of standard upkeep, maintenance and beautification, the course is the same. Primary rough stands at two inches and the greens – bermudagrass, naturally – are governed to measure just 10½ feet on the Stimpmeter. That’s slow by TOUR standards for a good reason, and it’s going to be necessary this week. The trailing edge of a Nor’easter that’ll be impacting the Eastern Seaboard of the United States will linger into Thursday’s opening round on Bermuda. As of now, winds are forecast to be sustained at 25 mph with gusts touching 35 mph. The breezes will be abate to the more normal range of 15-20 mph for the remainder, but the first-round scoring average could threaten last year’s second-round split of 73.638 for the same reason. For the week, the 2020 field average 71.151, but as it did at just 69.833 in its debut two years ago, the course would play considerably under par over 72 holes without wind as its primary defense. Inclement weather is expected to move in by Saturday and remain a threat on Sunday. At Port Royal last year, Gay ranked T4 in driving accuracy, T15 in greens in regulation and sixth in putts per GIR. The course ranked as the third-stingiest in fairways hit and 14th-toughest in GIR. (ShotLink isn’t utilized in the tournament, so there are no measured strokes. This means that statistics including all Strokes Gained analytics and proximity to the hole aren’t gathered.) Gay finished outside the top 40 in par-3 and par-5 scoring here a year ago, but he led the field in par-4 scoring and slotted 10th in converting his GIR into par breakers in regulation before turning away Wyndham Clark with birdie on the only hole required in a sudden-death playoff. Six golfers who competed at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP made the trip to Bermuda (as of Monday): Matthew NeSmith (T48 at ZOZO), Brandon Hagy (T54), Kramer Hickok (T57), Sepp Straka (T66), Peter Malnati (74th) and Garrick Higgo (T75).. Sleeper picks: A Military Tribute at The GreenbrierSleeper picks: A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier

Brendon Todd … Even if you didn’t pay any attention to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, you may have caught glimpses of him during the PGA TOUR season that preceded it. The one-time TOUR winner connected for four top 25s among seven cuts made in just 11 starts via Past Champion status. He was off the scene in earnest for three seasons battling the yips off the tee (block long irons right). With the issue having subsided, the 34-year-old has a new lease on his career and results to support reason to remain confident. He opened the Finals with a co-runner-up finish to solidify his return to the PGA TOUR. The timing of Greenbrier as the season opener is serendipitous given he finished a respective T4 and T6 in his last two trips in 2014 and 2015, before his game went sideways, literally and figuratively. Sebastián Muñoz … Thanks to a two-part surge in the second half, the 26-year-old from Colombia is fully exempt and north of the reshuffle category for the first time in his three seasons on the PGA TOUR. Only nine of his last 36 scores in stroke-play competition weren’t red numbers. Relatively balanced throughout his bag, and now riding the mild heater, he returns to The Old White TPC where he spun a career-low 61 to open the 2017 edition. His bid for a wire-to-wire victory was upended by a closing 72 to finish T3, so he’s also seeking redemption. Denny McCarthy … With virtually no wind expected and welcoming bentgrass greens that could be soft due to persistent rain, the PGA TOUR’s leader in Strokes Gained: Putting last season deserves attention at The Old White TPC. He’s unlikely to lead the field in greens in regulation, but even if he threatens the field average, he’ll give himself as good a chance as any to break through for his first title on the circuit. En route to eight top 25s in 2018-19, he ranked fifth in conversion percentage inside 10 feet, first in the putts of 15-20 feet, sixth in putting: birdies-or-better and T7, T43 and T10 in par-3, par-4 and par-5 scoring, respectively. Also signed for four rounds of par or better for a T39 in his debut at Greenbrier in 2018. Lanto Griffin … Back in the big leagues after another consistently strong season on the Korn Ferry Tour, there’s an ease about him that accompanies his talent. He’s also a good fit for The Old White TPC after finishing fourth on the 2019 KFT in both putts per GIR and putting: birdies-or-better. En route to a T7 at the KFT Championship, he ranked fourth in putts per GIR and led the field in par-5 scoring. In his last trip to Greenbrier, he recorded a T26 in 2018. It matched his second-best showing of his rookie season on the PGA TOUR. Harry Higgs … You’re going to enjoy getting to know the 27-year-old product of SMU where he was teammates with Bryson DeChambeau, also in this week’s field. Higgs has enjoyed a brilliant 11 months leading up to his rookie debut on the PGA TOUR at Greenbrier. After finishing atop the Order of Merit on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica (by $64) in 2018, he went on to record a win, a T2, a T3 and a pair of T9s in his first season on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2019. He finished the season slotted third in putts per GIR, fifth in putting: birdies-or-better, fourth in par-5 scoring and sixth in the all-around. After opening the Finals with a pair of top 25s, he’s sat out the finale, so he’s both in form and rested. NOTE: Sleeper is a relative term, so Rob uses unofficial criteria to determine who qualifies. Each of the following usually is determined to be ineligible for this weekly staple: Winners of the tournament on the current host course; winners in the same season; recent major champions; top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking; recent participants of team competitions.

Jordan Spieth appears on College GameDayJordan Spieth appears on College GameDay

With an intrastate battle between two top-25 teams taking place in Texas, College GameDay traveled to Austin on Saturday for tonight’s game between Texas and TCU. The show invited one of the best golfers in Texas history to serve as one of its guest pickers, as well. Jordan Spieth, who led Texas to an NCAA Championship a decade ago in his lone full season for the Longhorns, appeared on set to offer his picks for today’s top games, including the one involving his alma mater. Wearing a burnt orange letterman jacket emblazoned with a white ‘T’ on the left breast, Spieth’s selection for tonight’s game should come as no surprise. Spieth isn’t alone in thinking the Longhorns could pull off the upset of the undefeated Frogs tonight, however. Texas, which is ranked 18th in the College Football Playoff ranking with a 6-3 record, was listed as a seven-point favorite Saturday morning even though the Horned Frogs are 9-0 and fourth in the CFP ranking. TCU currently holds the final spot in the postseason, alongside perennial powerhouses Georgia, Ohio State and Michigan. The Longhorns are 64-27-1 all-time against TCU, their former Southwest Conference rival, including 36-15-1 at home. Texas is coming off a 34-27 win over No. 13 Kansas State. Spieth is the second TOUR player, and Texas alum, to appear on College GameDay this season. Scottie Scheffler was presented with the PGA TOUR Player of the Year Award while appearing on set for the September game between Texas and then-No. 1 Alabama. The Crimson Tide won that game, 20-19, on a field goal with 10 seconds remaining. Spieth is coming off a successful season of his own. He earned his 13th PGA TOUR title at the RBC Heritage, finished 13th in the FedExCup and went 5-0-0 for the victorious U.S. Team at the Presidents Cup. Spieth turned pro midway through his sophomore season at Texas, helping lead a resurgence for the historic program that won the 1971 and 1972 NCAA titles with Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. The 2012 NCAA title was the third for the Longhorns’ golf program. Texas won its fourth national championship this year while being led by Pierceson Coody, the top player in PGA TOUR University presented by Velocity Global.
