Torrey specialist Jason Day returns with new coach and mixed sticks

SAN DIEGO - Two-time Farmers Insurance champion Jason Day will make his 2021 debut at Torrey Pines with a Frankenstein bag set up and a new coach behind him as he looks to return to the top of the PGA TOUR. Day, who won the Farmers Insurance Open in 2015 and 2018, revealed recently he is working with Tiger Woods' former instructor Chris Como and will start the year as an equipment free agent after being with TaylorMade since 2006. Como is just the second major coach the 33-year-old Day has had in his career with the Australian previously working with childhood mentor Colin Swatton for two decades before the pair parted ways last season. The 12-time TOUR winner has battled back issues over the last decade and continues to try to adjust his game to limit the risk of injury and pain. Day divulged he is trying to get his swing path more inside but has to do so at a slow pace as it is a move that in the past has caused problems. "I feel like things are progressing nicely with my swing … but I just really have to be very patient with the technical aspect of it," the 12-time TOUR winner said. "I’m working with Chris Como and we’re not trying to change the makeup that I had beforehand ... we're just trying to fine-tune it. "We’re trying to get better hip movement, we’re going to get a little bit deeper on the backswing in regard to the hip motion, and I’m trying to get a little bit more turn in the upper body ... last year I was kind of coming over the top of it just to kind of alleviate some of the back pain. "Right now, if I do it correctly, it doesn’t hurt my back, which is tremendous. For the longest time I was swaying a little bit, getting a little bit too much tilt in my upper body, and that was forcing my right hip to sway out and then I’d get too lateral going forward. Then I’d crunch down to try and lift the ball up and crunch down my back, and I just did it over and over and over again, and then sooner or later it would just kind of flare up and go out." Day is making the changes with a bevy of mis-matched equipment. In fact, he will use six different brands in his bag with a Ping driver, TaylorMade 3-wood, Mizuno irons, Artisan wedges, a White Hot 2-ball Odyssey putter and a Bridgestone XS golf ball. Day missed the TOUR Championship for the second straight year in 2020 and hasn't won on TOUR since his two-win season of 2018 - a drought coming up on near three years. He sits outside the top 40 in the world after spending a total of 51 weeks at the top back in 2015 and 2016. "All I have to do is just go out and play ... there are no excuses," Day said ahead of starting back up this season while sitting 94th in the FedExCup. "Playing bad golf is frustrating, being a competitor and not living up to what you think you should be living up to is very frustrating. This is my 14th season on TOUR now; I know that a career is long, but I’m trying to do everything I possibly can to get back to where I should be, and I feel like that’s No. 1 in the world. "If I look in the (recent) past, it’s depressing, so I don’t want to do that. If I look to the future, it gives me anxiety, so I don’t want to do that. I can only control what I can do right now." A closer look at what Day has in the bag this week: Driver: Ping G425 (10 degrees) Shaft: TPT 14 LO 5 3-wood: TaylorMade SIM Max Shaft: Mitsubishi Kuro Kage XTS 80TX Irons: Mizuno JPX921 Tour (3-P) Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold X7 Wedges: Artisan Prototype (50,54,60) Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 Putter: Odyssey White Hot 2 Ball Ball: Bridgestone Tour B XS

Inside Josh Allen's legendary gear setup at Pebble BeachInside Josh Allen's legendary gear setup at Pebble Beach

Josh Allen, the decorated starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, is playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am alongside PGA TOUR pro Keith Mitchell for the second straight year. And, once again, Allen is turning heads with his golf equipment setup at Pebble Beach. In 2022, Allen went viral thanks to his custom TaylorMade Hi-Toe wedges, which were stamped with "QB1" and "17," and paint-filled with Buffalo Bills colorways (a starting quarterback is commonly called QB1, and Allen wears No. 17). This year, Allen showed up with the same wedges still in the bag, but he's added a few new show-stopping additions to his setup. As he revealed in a video interview with GolfWRX.com, Allen now has a custom Scotty Cameron Newport 2 TourType SSS putter. It's stamped with his name on the back bumpers, has "17" stamped on the milled face, and it's paint-filled with Bills colors. According to a tweet from PGA TOUR player Kevin Streelman, Allen worked with Scotty Cameron product manager Dan Eaton (a.k.a "Dan the Man") on the custom design. The Bills legend seemed quite pleased with Eaton’s work: "I friggin' love this thing," Allen told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday at Pebble. To keep the custom putter safe, Allen uses a Jordan 1 sneaker cover, which is plenty fashionable in its own right. Allen also recently added a new TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus driver, equipped with a Fujikura Ventus TR Black 7X shaft. He fills out the rest of his bag with a TaylorMade Stealth Plus 3-wood, a TaylorMade P790 UDI 2-iron, and a set of TaylorMade P770 irons (4-9 iron). He uses OnCore golf balls. Follow the first-round action Thursday as Allen and Mitchell tee it up at Spyglass Hill at 12:14 p.m. ET.

Andy Ogletree set for pro debut at Mayakoba Golf ClassicAndy Ogletree set for pro debut at Mayakoba Golf Classic

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico - Andy Ogletree doesn't remember writing the note. But he's quite happy he kept it. As a third-grade student in Mississippi, Ogletree penned a note to himself regarding life and career aspirations. In the note - dated February 20, 2008 - he said he wanted to become a pro golfer because "they make a lot of money" and "they also get to travel a lot." This week, Ogletree gets his first chance to make money as a professional golfer. After finishing T34 at the Masters (gaining entry via the 2019 U.S. Amateur title), the Georgia Tech alum announced his decision to turn pro on November 19 - sharing his third-grade note via a Twitter post. Ogletree will compete in this week's Mayakoba Golf Classic presented by UNIFIN on a sponsor's exemption, and he'll aim to earn enough non-member FedExCup points this season to earn either TOUR Special Temporary Membership or a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals. "One of my best friends growing up, his mom was my third-grade teacher. She was going through some old files and cleaning out some of her storage, and she came across a letter that I wrote in 2008," said Ogletree in explaining the note's origins. "She gave it to my mom. My mom's also a schoolteacher at our local school, so she was like, ‘Hey, I think you might want to have this.' "This was a couple of years ago ... my mom framed it, put it in my room knowing that one day I would be a professional golfer, and she's like, ‘This is going to be super cool.' Super fortunate that she kept that letter, but it was definitely a cool way to announce turning professional." Ogletree graduated from Georgia Tech this past May with a degree in business administration, and now lives in Atlanta with TOUR member Vincent Whaley, a fellow Georgia Tech alum. The 22-year-old gleans insight on TOUR life from Whaley and fellow Yellow Jacket alums like Stewart Cink, Chesson Hadley and Matt Kuchar, among many others. "I feel comfortable asking any of them for tidbits or advice that I might want to know about," Ogletree said. Beginning this week, he strives to channel that advice as a touring pro. And his third-grade self is smiling.

Power Rankings: Hero World ChallengePower Rankings: Hero World Challenge

The PGA TOUR enters the second week of its holiday hiatus, but you won’t find any in the stacked field at this week’s Hero World Challenge easing off the throttle. After the pandemic canceled the 2020 edition of the annual stop at Albany in The Bahamas, an intimate gathering reconvenes with the same no-cut, stroke-play competition over 72 holes, purse of $3.5 million and full-field distribution of Official World Golf Ranking points. And, oh yeah, Tiger Woods remains the host. The only change pertains to the permanent increase in the size of the field. For details on that, how Albany played in 2019 and other nuggets, scroll past the projection for all 20 participants. For the first time in its 21-year history, a record 20 golfers will be chasing victory and its $1-million prize. Accommodations were ratified to add the winners of the most recent edition of THE PLAYERS Championship and a third sponsor exemption inside the top 50 of the OWGR on Sept. 6. They join winners of all majors since the previous edition of the Hero World Challenge, the other two sponsor exemptions and the defending champion. To fill the field, the OWGR on Sept. 6 was used in order of position. Albany is in its sixth consecutive edition as the host. It’s a par 72 with five par 3s and five par 5s. In its first five spins, it surrendered a scoring average south of 70 just once. That occurred in 2017 when the field of 18 landed at 70.333 and despite Rickie Fowler’s course-record 61 to seal a four-stroke victory. In 2019, the scoring average was 69.792. Henrik Stenson prevailed by at 18-under 270. He was the only golfer that week to sign for four rounds in the 60s. With sand, water and wind helping to defend scoring, course management and a plan of attack on the par 5s is the way to go on Albany, which stretches to 7,309 yards. Stenson played the par 5s in 4.60 with one eagle, eight birdies and nine pars against two bogeys. Considering only par breakers across the rest of the course’s 52 holes over four rounds, he circled another eagle (at the par-4 14th hole in the opening round) and 11 birdies. Therefore, he converted 42.86% of his 21 par breakers on 27.78 percent of the holes played. Moderate winds at worst are forecast, so the talented field will have its way with Albany once again. There’s a threat of passing showers on Saturday, but the bermudagrass greens should touch 12 feet on the Stimpmeter for which they’re prepped. What rough there is stands just an inch and a half. NOTE: PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf will resume with the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Jan. 6-9.
