Brendan Steele (61) leads through 54 holes at Sony

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Sam Burns kept piling up birdies Friday, turning a solid start into a great round of 8-under 63 for a share of the lead in the Valspar Championship. Bradley ended his round by holing out for eagle from 100 yards in the ninth fairway, over a deep bunker to the elevated green. The shot left him guessing until he saw the fans jump out of their seats. That gave him a 66 and the best uphill walk at Innisbrook. “I turned a good day into a great day,” Bradley said. “Man, it was a fun day. And what a way to finish. It was a blast.” Bradley and Burns were at 12-under 130, and their play in the steamy afternoon on the Copperhead course gave them a little separation starting out the weekend. Lucas Glover (65), Charley Hoffman (66) and Max Homa (68) were four shots back. Only 10 players were within five shots of the lead through 36 holes. Bradley, whose longest par putt was 4 feet in his bogey-free opening round, opened with two quick birdies before coming up short of the green on the 12th hole and making his first bogey. Birdies were hard to come by the rest of the way, but he made up for it with one swing. With the steep hill, he played the 100-yard shot as if it were 119, and then he added 6 yards to account for a little wind. It was a gap wedge. “A perfect shot,” he said. “You can’t see the green from down there, so you have to wait for the crowd’s reaction,” he said. “And when everyone puts their arms up, normally that means it goes in. So another bonus of having fans out here. It makes it a lot more exciting for everybody.” Maybe not for Phil Mickelson. The five-time major champion said he is struggling to keep his focus, or to regain his focus after distractions in the gallery, such as a phone ringing. He bogeyed two of his last three holes for a 69 to miss the cut by one shot. “My physical ability to refocus, to back away and then refocus and so forth, I’m physically not able to do it right now,” the 50-year-old Mickelson said. Burns had a few key par saves early in his round, and he took off after making the turn. He holed an 18-foot birdie putt on No. 10, reached the par-5 11th in two for a birdie and then holed a bunker shot on the 12th. “Birdied the first three on the back and then just kind of we’re off,” he said. Burns had a one-shot lead after 54 holes in the Vivint Houston Open in November and closed with a 72 to tie for seventh. He had a two-shot lead at Riviera going into the last round and shot 69 to finish one shot out of a playoff won by Homa. “For me it’s just sticking to what I’ve been doing, having a good game plan going into the day,” he said. “I know over the weekend there will be some challenges, and I’m excited for the opportunity.” Homa still has plenty of confidence from his win two months ago at Riviera, and it shows. He doesn’t feel as though any part of his game is out of order, and his putting has been superb. Homa has made five putts of 25 feet or longer. And his short track record at Innisbrook — three appearances, three missed cuts, all six rounds over par — is a distant memory that comes with a simple explanation. “I think I’m just better at golf now,” Homa said. Among those at 7-under 135 were Sungjae Im, one of the best iron players on TOUR at a course renowned for rewarding good ball-strikers, and past Innisbrook winner Charl Schwartzel. Due to the great finishes of Burns and Bradley, the top two players have their work cut out for them. Dustin Johnson (68) was nine shots back, while Justin Thomas (71) was 10 behind. Glover had a good stretch of his own, hitting 6-iron from 209 yards to 4 feet on No. 3, the hardest hole of the second round on the Copperhead course. He followed that with a chip 7-iron to a front pin just over the bunker on the par-3 fourth, settling 4 feet away for another birdie. Glover is trying to build confidence. Unlike Homa, he doesn’t have a recent victory to give him a spark. The last win for the former U.S. Open champion was 10 years ago at Quail Hollow. Still, there is a rhythm to how he plays and how he walks that is starting to look familiar. Glover doesn’t waste any time stepping over the ball and making contact — usually in the middle of the clubface — nor does he get overly excited on a Friday. But it’s a step in the right direction. His iron play has been average. His short game has bailed him out. All he wants now is to get his game a little more tidy. “Two more rounds to go. A lot can happen,” Glover said. “But I’m happy the way I’m playing, happy with the way I’m putting and just want to have a shot.”

Charles Howell III is headed to the TOUR Championship … provided that the historical trend of recent FedExCup Playoffs holds in the revamped schedule for the 2018-19 PGA TOUR season. Thanks to his win Sunday at The RSM Classic, Howell moved to the top of the FedExCup standings after the completion of the fall portion of the wraparound schedule. The previous five players who have finished the fall atop the standings each eventually advanced to the 30-man Playoffs finale at East Lake in their given season. That’s the good news for Howell. The bad news is that none of those five won the FedExCup. Jimmy Walker, the fall points leader in the 2013-14 season, had the best overall finish at seventh in points. Last year’s fall leader, Patton Kizzire, just squeezed into East Lake and finished 30th. This season’s FedExCup Playoffs offers an unknown factor than previous seasons, since the Playoffs have been reduced from four to three tournaments. But if Howell can maintain his position inside the top 30 after the second event, the BMW Championship, he will advance to the TOUR Championship for the first time since 2011. PREVIOUS FALL POINTS LEADERS ON THE FLIP SIDE None of the last five FedExCup champions earned less than 34 points in the fall events (Jordan Spieth in 2015). In fact, the other four champions earned at least 100 points in the fall; last season’s champ, Justin Rose, finished the fall a year ago with 550 points. That historical trend is bad news for notables such as Dustin Johnson (who currently has 28 points), Rory McIlroy (six points) and Jordan Spieth (six points). PLENTY OF POINT-GATHERERS A total of 215 players earned at least one point this fall – that’s the most in the six seasons of the wraparound schedule. Getting at least one point in the fall gives a player better than a 50-50 chance of making the Playoffs. In the previous five seasons, a total of 1,023 players earned points in the fall – and nearly 57 percent of those players went on to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs Taking it one more step, more than 12 percent of those players made it to the TOUR Championship. But here’s the most telling statistic that emphasizes the importance of the fall – just 21 of a possible 150 players earned a spot in the TOUR Championship after failing to play or earn at least a single point in the fall. Tiger Woods did that last season … and he’ll hope to do it again this season. WHO IS THE FALL KING? In the five years of the wraparound schedule, no player has earned more FedExCup points than Justin Thomas – not surprising since three of his nine career wins have come in the fall (CIMB Classic in 2015 and 2016; CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES in 2017). Ryan Moore, Russell Knox and Charles Howell III are the next three players on that list. Thomas has made 18 fall starts in the history of the wraparound schedule to accumulate his 2,087 points. That’s an average of 115.9 points per start – good, but not the best. No player has been more efficient in the fall than current FedExCup champ Justin Rose. He has made five starts in the wraparound schedule since the 2013-14 season and has averaged 195 points per start. Dustin Johnson (five starts) is next at 185.6, followed by Patrick Cantlay (six starts, 164.3 average), then Thomas. Reigning PGA TOUR Player of the Year Brooks Koepka is fifth on the list (12 starts, 109.2 average).

Here are nine tidbits from the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu that gamers can use tomorrow, this weekend or down the road. Be looking for the Emergency 9 shortly after the close of play of each round of the tournament. Know Thy Enemy These were the top 10 picked golfers in the PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO. The decisions might have been a bit more difficult this week with a field of 144 instead of 34. Now you know who you’re up against! Lead Dawg Chris Kirk (Georgia Bulldogs) fired a bogey-free 63 in the morning wave to grab the lead. Kirk matched his opening-round 63 at The RSM Classic to wrap up the 2017 season (T4). This is the fifth time in the last six years that he’s posted 65 or lower at Waialae. He posted back-to-back finishes inside the top five in this event in 2013-14 with T5 and solo second. Co-Lead Dawg Zach Johnson (Drake Bulldogs) shares the lead also with a bogey-free 63. This Dawg didn’t have the pain and suffering as his friends from Athens after Georgia lost to Alabama in the College Football Playoff on Monday night. Johnson, similarly to Kirk, was posting low ones at the end of last year with a closing 64 at Mayakoba before a third round 64 at The RSM Classic (T8). The 2009 champ was late arriving because of the flu but he’s hit the ground running and looks to grab his fourth top 10 in the last five years. Hardy Har-Harman The way he’s been playing in recent weeks is no laughing matter. His 64 to open suggests he’s not satisfied collecting top 10s. Harman played in the final group the final three rounds last week and finished third, his fourth straight outing inside the top 10. Hop on that saddle and have both hands on the reigns! The Old Man and the Sea As I wrote about in The Confidence Factor, Waialae is Jerry Kelly’s happy place. Sure, he’s 51 but he’s also the second-highest earner in the history of this event. This is his 21st start and his opening round 66 will put him in a great position to make his 16th weekend. His MC last year broke up a streak of three in a row in the top 10. Think Fred Couples at Augusta if you need a comparison! Tide Rolling Defending champion Justin Thomas (67) posted his worst round in five trips as he didn’t sign for anything over 65 in setting the tournament scoring record last year. With Jim “Bones” McKay on the bag for the first time, Thomas didn’t square a bogey and made three birdies. The wind, as expected, was not a factor on Thursday so he’s in excellent shape for Friday morning to get even lower. With 59 and 61 to his name on this track already, I’m sticking him into the lineup tomorrow. Players who didn’t get in red figures today are going to have to get low on Friday as the top 98 are currently even or better. The cut last year was 3-under-par 137. Moon Rising Two-time winner Sangmoon Bae is back on TOUR after serving required military service in his native Korea. His two year duty has ended and he’s back and looking to recapture the form that made him valuable to gamers from 2012-2015. His final full season, 2015, saw him tee it up 30 times, win once and add four additional top 10s. At 31 he’s hardly past it as his 66 on Thursday suggests. I’ll also point out this is his first round in the 60s in 11 tries this season so I’m not jumping in just yet. Spieth’s ‘Snowman’ Those who stuck him in the starting lineup won’t be happy with his snowman in paradise on the penultimate hole of the day. The good news is that quadruple bogey was surrounded by eight birdies, including one on the final hole of the day that will make dinner for Spieth, and gamers, taste a little bit better. Last week, Spieth got off to a slow start yet rallied in Round 2. The brave (or trailing) will throw him out there tomorrow but those near the top can patiently bide their time. Study Hall Jimmy Walker (74) has a fantastic recent record at this event but he’s also battling Lyme disease and is nowhere near 100 percent physically or mentally, the television coverage reported … Luke Donald was hospitalized with chest pains at The RSM Classic in the first round leading to his withdrawal. He opened with 72 in his first event back … Morgan Hoffmann (69) disclosed in early December that he has been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. … Ryan Palmer (71) returned to action after shoulder surgery knocked him out after the Wyndham Championship. He has six starts on his major medical exemption to keep his status.
