A breezy morning caused a bit of havoc, as you’ll read below. Defending champ Dustin Johnson struggled out of the box and never could get anything going. Darkness stranded a handful of players still on the course, so Round 1 will finish early Friday morning. Automatic for the People The best news for gamers at The Riviera Country Club is there is another round before the cut and the PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO allows substitutions. For the second week in a row, Dustin Johnson was the overwhelming favorite in this format. I’m not saying it’s time to panic… yet. Johnson’s 74 today had essentially one really bad hole (triple bogey) on a track he usually dominates. To put it in perspective, it’s his first round over par since 2015, a streak of 10 loops. There’s no chance I’m taking him out of the lineup. Afternoon Edition Justin Thomas lamented on the telecast that there was wind this morning playing havoc through the canyon. Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau (5-under 66) were in the later flight and share the lead in the clubhouse in Round 1. Both players with West Coast roots were on-point as Cantlay hit the most GIR (16 of 18) and Finau led in strokes-gained: off-the-tee. Both players circled six birdies against only one bogey because the putter also cooperated. Cantlay led the field in putts per GIR while Finau was second. They both set their career-low score here as well. Morning Show The early wave was paced by a trio of 67’s (-4) from Tom Hoge, Dominic Bozzelli and Sam Saunders. Pro gamers will point out that Saunders opened with 64 here last year to lead by two before ending up T49. Hoge’s name is familiar in this column, as he opened with 65 at Waialae and was sniffing around at Torrey Pines after Friday. Bozzelli finished last season No. 119 in the FedExCup standings. He didn’t play after the RCB Canadian Open as he tried to get healthy for the new season. This is only his fifth event of 2017-18, and that matches exactly how many people have rostered him this week in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO. Bubba Conundrum Bubba Watson is off to a flying start as the two-time champion (2014, 2016) opened with 68 (-3) and sits T6. He’s playing in the NBA All-Star Game Celebrity Game Friday night, so he’ll be hustling to get off the course and to the Staples Center after his Friday round. According to his social media, he met with Ellen DeGeneres and Chuck Lorre earlier in the week, so maybe being in Hollywood is good for his game! Part of me wouldn’t be surprised if he posted a clunky one on Friday because of his pending night on the court in the big game. Caution. Reavie Relief Gamers who were late to the party but are jumping on board this week after P2 at TPC Scottsdale two weeks ago and T2 at Pebble Beach last week, you may now exhale. You’re not the jinx! Reavie hasn’t posted a round above par in 2018, and his 68 to open has him sitting T6 entering Friday. He was six-for-six scrambling in Round 1 to lead the field and didn’t make a bogey! Gamers are catching on as you can see in the chart above. Power Trio The featured PGA TOUR LIVE group of Tiger Woods (T63), Rory McIlroy (T36) and Justin Thomas (T17) saw the youngest member take home the medal honors with 69 (-2). Woods did hit more fairways and circled more birdies (5 to 1) than McIlroy, but the Ulsterman needed one less shot to complete the day. Gamers who have Woods in the lineup this week surely know that this is NOT one of his historical money grabs. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t get over the finish line tomorrow. McIlroy couldn’t putt last week at Pebble Beach, and that has followed him down the coast. He made one birdie and one eagle but needed almost two putts per green today. Wizard of Westwood That’s John Wooden, the famous UCLA basketball coach, not Ted Potter Jr., who won last week at Pebble Beach. Potter checked in at No. 130 of 144 who teed it up after his opening round 76 (+5). He’ll need something special to make the weekend, but his two-year exemption from winning last week is a very nice insurance policy. Study Hall Bill Haas is lucky to be alive after a Ferrari he was riding in was involved in an accident earlier in the week. The driver, Haas’s host in Los Angeles for the tournament, was killed and multiple vehicles were involved. I have no idea how this will affect Haas moving forward. It wouldn’t surprise me if he takes some time off. We’ll all follow this together. … Jim Herman WD with a foot injury, according to PGA TOUR Media. … Players returning to action this week that caught my eye include Jim Furyk (73) and Charley Hoffman (75). This is Furyk’s first start since the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow last summer. Hoffman WD last week at Pebble Beach with a back injury. … Woods and Marc Leishman both lost a ball in a eucalyptus tree today.

Dustin Johnson, the 20-time PGA TOUR winner and current world No. 3, underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage damage on his left knee Thursday morning and is expected to make a full recovery before returning to the PGA TOUR this fall. The surgery was performed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by orthopedic surgeon Dr. George Caldwell, who has worked with both the Miami Dolphins and Miami Marlins, as well as other sports teams. The procedure, according to Johnson’s representatives, is considered routine and was similar in nature to the surgery performed by Caldwell on Johnson’s right knee in December, 2011. Johnson was able to return to action in mid-January the following year. The 35-year-old Johnson comes off a 2018-19 season in which he posted one victory — at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship — and was runner-up in two majors. He also qualified for the season-ending TOUR Championship for the 11th consecutive year and the win in Mexico continued his streak of having won at least one time in every PGA TOUR season since 2008. But in his last eight starts after his solo second to Brooks Koepka at the PGA Championship – in which Koepka took over world No. 1 from Johnson — DJ failed to produce a top-10 finish. That’s his longest non-top-10 stretch in a single season on TOUR since his rookie year of 2008. In his most recent start, he tied for last in the 30-man field at the TOUR Championship, recording four rounds over par and finishing at 10 over despite entering the tournament at 3 under via the new Starting Strokes format. Not since the 2013 BMW Championship at Conway Farms has Johnson failed to produce at least one round of par-or-better when playing four rounds. And not since the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion has he finished double-digits over par for four rounds. Given that he was the only player at the PGA to post all four rounds under par, Johnson certainly seemed in good form after leaving Bethpage Black. “I’m pleased with where the game’s at, especially we’ve still got a lot of big tournaments left this year,â€� he said after the final round. But on the weekend at East Lake, he said he was mentally worn out. “I got two months (off),â€� Johnson told Golfweek. “I’m definitely excited about that.â€� Johnson struggled on the weekends, especially in the latter half of the season. The first sign of trouble came at the Valspar Championship in March. Johnson was one shot off the lead held by Paul Casey after 54 holes, but his final-round 3-over 74 left him tied for sixth. A 74 may not sound all that bad, but it was the highest Sunday score by the top 17 players on the final leaderboard – and it ended a streak of 14 consecutive sub-par rounds by DJ. The 6-over 77 on the Sunday at RBC Heritage was even more alarming, as Johnson blew a one-shot lead after three rounds to finish T-28. No player among the top 44 on the final leaderboard had a worst score. The weekend struggles were readily apparent during his non-top-10 stretch to finish the season. Of his last six made cuts – thus, 12 weekend rounds – Johnson had just three rounds under par, with two others at even par. Johnson ranked 10th in first-round scoring average, ninth in the second round, then T-92 for the third round and T-126 for the fourth round. In the previous two seasons, Johnson had a top-10 scoring average for both the third and fourth round. His T-126 ranking in the final round was his worst since 2010, and his T-92 ranking in the third round was the second-worst in that same span. Johnson also struggled to produce eagles, usually a big component of his power game. A total of 1,634 eagles were recorded in the 2018-19 season … and DJ had just two of them. Only one of those came on a par-5 hole (the 16th at TPC Sawgrass). His other eagle was recorded in the third round of his win at the WGC-Mexico when his tee shot at the 369-yard par-4 second finished inside 5 feet. The previous season, Johnson had 15 eagles. In 2017, nine. In 2016, it was 16 (tying him for most by any player). In 2015, it was 15. He ranked 184th on TOUR in eagles per hole this season. He ranked first in that category in 2010 and 2013, ranked second in 2016 and 2018, and ranked top five on two other occasions. He failed to post an eagle in his last 48 rounds this season.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alec Cabacungan won't be at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open to provide a little extra motivation for defending champion Kevin Na this week. But the charismatic 18-year-old who suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta, more commonly known as brittle bone disease, certainly made a lasting impression on Na when the two renewed acquaintances prior to last year's tournament at TPC Summerlin. RELATED: More on RSM Birdies Fore Love Cabacungan, who wants to be a sports broadcaster, interviewed Na that Wednesday and showed the PGA TOUR veteran some video of his breakthrough win at the tournament in 2011. Fast forward to Sunday and a hard-fought battle with Patrick Cantlay that Na won on the second playoff hole. The win was Na's second in Las Vegas, his adopted hometown, and the fourth of his TOUR career. And Na says talking with Cabacungan about his 2011 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open victory helped give him the kind of confidence he needed to win. "He motivated me that week that I could do it again," says Na, who fired a career-low 61 in the third round. In addition to the 500 FedExCup points and $1.26 million Na earned last year, he also led the week's RSM Birdies Fore Love competition. That means he got a bonus of $50,000 to give to the charity of his choice, and it certainly wasn't a hard decision. Na and his family, which includes wife Jullianne and their two children, decided to give the money to Shriners Hospitals for Children for OI research. The genetic disorder affects between 20,000 and 50,000 people in the United States. But meeting just one of those had a particular impact on Na. "One, it made sense because I won the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open," he says of the donation. "And meeting Alec and getting in to learn about that disease was the reason why." Jim Smith, Imperial Potentate of Shriners International, says Na's donation makes a big difference in the mission of the organization, which has a network of 22 non-profit hospitals nationwide. "Our donors, whom we depend on, have helped us treat more than 1.4 million children from over 170 countries," Smith says. "We are humbled by Kevin's generosity." Cabacungan is one of those children. He has been a patient at the Chicago Shriners Hospital since he was two months old, receiving therapy and treatments designed to build stronger bone mass. In his short 18 years on earth, Cabacungan has undergone 12 surgeries and broken more than 60 bones. Patients with OI can break bones by doing something as innocuous sneezing or coughing, as well as falling down. Despite the many obstacles he's faced, though, Cabacungan is known for his bubbly personality and his infectious smile. "He's a happy guy and has a lot of good energy," Na said. Cabacungan is essentially the face of Shriners Hospitals for Children, too. Since he was 14 years old, he has appeared in commercials broadcast nationwide to raise the profile of the facilities that work with children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions and burn injuries, as well as other healthcare issues. The sports-minded teenager, who loves to play wheelchair basketball, makes appearances around the country. Cabacungan has been profiled on CBS's "Sunday Morning" and joined one of his idols, Ernie Johnson, along with NBA greats Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal on TNT's "Inside the NBA" in 2017. And one year ago, Cabacungan was at TPC Summerlin, trying his interviewing skills out on Na, who responded by showing the teen his signature move of walking in the putt. "I know his dream is to become a sports announcer, and I hope his dream comes true," Na said. On Sunday, though, Na was living his own dream. "It’s always nice to play in your hometown, but to win on top of that, it was very special," Na says. "And to have my family there to celebrate together on 18 was a special moment. "And to be able to donate to Shriners made it even better."
