The First Look: Workday Charity Open

The PGA TOUR and John Deere announced in May that this year’s John Deere Classic would be replaced by a new event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Enter the Workday Charity Open. The Workday Charity Open will be the first of back-to-back events at Muirfield Village and will feature seven of the top 15 players in the world. The John Deere Classic is set to return to the TOUR schedule in 2021 for its 50th playing. FIELD NOTES: Patrick Cantlay, who won last year’s Memorial Tournament, looks to continue the good vibes on Jack Nicklaus’ signature layout… Three of the top five in the world will tee it up at the Workday, including No. 2 Jon Rahm, No. 4 Justin Thomas, and No. 5 Brooks Koepka… Koepka returns after withdrawing from the Travelers Championship as a precautionary measure after his caddie Ricky Elliott tested positive for COVID-19… Koepka’s brother Chase – who Monday-qualified for the Travelers Championship but also withdrew as a precaution – received a sponsor exemption into the Workday… Denny McCarthy, Nick Watney, and Dylan Frittelli, who tested positive for COVID-19, will return to action… Other notables include Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, and Rickie Fowler. FEDEXCUP: Winner gets 500 FedExCup points. COURSE: Muirfield Village Golf Club, 7,392 yards, par 72. Jack Nicklaus’ hometown club opened in 1974. The longtime TOUR venue has also been the home of the 1987 Ryder Cup, 1998 Solheim Cup, and 2013 Presidents Cup. The TOUR will host back-to-back events at the course, located in Dublin, Ohio. STORYLINES: Although spectators will be allowed in a limited capacity at next week’s Memorial, they will not be allowed at the Workday. … Bryson DeChambeau, who won the Memorial in 2018, will take his first week off since the TOUR’s Return to Golf. DeChambeau notched results of T3-T8-T6 in the first three events of the revised TOUR schedule… Nick Taylor, who won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, will play in his first event since the TOUR’s Return to Golf. He has remained in Canada with his wife and young son for the last month… Including Cantlay and Spieth, the Workday will feature nine of the top 10 from last year’s Memorial, including 2014 Memorial winner Hideki Matsuyama… The Workday is a one-off event. 72-HOLE RECORD (Memorial): 268, Tom Lehman (1994) 18-HOLE RECORD (Memorial): 61, John Huston (2nd round, 1996) LAST TIME: Debut event. Why Fleetwood will join Rahm in the final group SundayWhy Fleetwood will join Rahm in the final group Sunday

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Why is Tommy Fleetwood – and not Rory McIlroy — in the final group Sunday at THE PLAYERS Championship? “I think I’m the better-looking one, so they put me in the last group,â€ Fleetwood said with a wry smile. Well, Fleetwood does have the most-impressive hair on the PGA TOUR, but that’s not the reason why. It actually goes back to the fact that he finished Friday’s second round approximately 40 minutes earlier than McIlroy. Fleetwood was the first player to sign for 12 under that day and assumed the clubhouse lead. McIlroy eventually joined him as the co-leader and in the final group for Saturday. Since Fleetwood was first in on Friday, that meant he had the honors off the first tee Saturday. Eighteen holes later, Fleetwood and McIlroy stood on the 18th green, each at 14 under, with the final twosome still undecided. Leader Jon Rahm, at 15 under, was guaranteed one spot. McIlroy could’ve joined him at that number but missed his 10-foot birdie putt, then finished off his tap-in par. Fleetwood followed with his par putt from 5 feet. RELATED: Pins and needles | Why Woods and Na were laughing at 17 | St. Patrick’s Day finish | How Island Green is playing Usually, it’s first-in, last-out, except when both players are in the same group and finish with the same score. Then it reverts to whoever struck the first tee shot. Hence, Fleetwood will join Rahm at 1:35 p.m. ET on Sunday, while McIlroy tees off 10 minutes earlier with Jason Day, who is at 12 under. It might seem like a small issue, except for the fact that McIlroy has been in the final group nine times in worldwide events the last two years and failed to convert a single one into victory. McIlroy seems more concerned about taking advantage of the four par 5s at TPC Sawgrass. He was 6 under on those holes in the first two rounds but played them at even par on Saturday. “Definitely an area that I need to really concentrate on and try to make the most of those holes because it is getting difficult out there,â€ McIlroy said. “Definitely with the conditions the way they might be tomorrow, you’ve got to take advantage of the easier holes.â€ As for being in the final group with Rahm – taking his first 54-hole lead in his TOUR career – Fleetwood said it doesn’t make much difference to him. “The course is the same and the atmosphere between the second to the last group or the last group won’t really change,â€ said the Englishman. “It’ll be good to be in the final group again. That will be all weekend that I’ve played in the final group, so that’s something to be very happy about.â€

Singh leads Langer by a stroke at Senior PGA on Trump courseSingh leads Langer by a stroke at Senior PGA on Trump course

For Bernhard Langer, winning the Senior PGA Championship after several close calls would cap off a decade of dominance on the over-50 circuit. Vijay Singh is playing the event for the first time in his fifth year of eligibility and still wants to compete on the PGA Tour. Singh used his power to move ahead of Langer on Saturday at rain-softened Trump National, but Langer used his guile to stay close, setting up a duel for the title between the Hall of Famers. The 54-year-old Singh made three more birdies on par 5s to shoot a 4-under 67 at President Donald Trump’s course on the shores of the Potomac River. He had a 15-under 201 total, playing the par 5s in 10 under. “He played phenomenal,” Langer

The PGA TOUR uses a standardized system for determining event fields, based off the current season’s Priority Ranking while also including additional exemption and qualifying categories. Field sizes can vary by event, as can the number of event-specific exemptions. Fully exempt PGA TOUR members are guaranteed entry into all full-field events, with various conditional categories subject to periodic reshuffles based upon FedExCup Points accrued throughout the season. Categories with ‘reshuffle’ notation indicate that a reshuffle period has occurred.
