Tiger Woods to miss Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard

Tiger Woods will not play in next week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, a tournament he has won eight times, most recently in 2013. Mark Steinberg, longtime agent for Woods, 44, confirmed to ESPN’s Bob Harig that Woods “is not going to play. Back still stiff and just not quite ready.” Steinberg also told USA Today’s Steve DiMeglio that Woods skipping an event in which he’s enjoyed so much success is “the new normal. Things are week to week. He’s very much good to go when he’s healthy, and he’s not when he’s a little sore.â€ Woods remains in search of his 83rd PGA TOUR win, which would move him out of a tie with Sam Snead for the all-time wins record. He is coming off a 68th-place finish at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera, and a T9 at the Farmers Insurance Open before that. His most recent win was the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP last fall, which tied Snead with 82 TOUR wins. He then went undefeated as playing captain at the Presidents Cup at the end of last year to lead his U.S. Team to victory. Prior to Friday’s news, several golf observers speculated that Woods’ historic 83rd victory could come at Bay Hill, where among his many accomplishments he won four straight times from 2000-03. He finished T5 there in 2018, and last season did not play. He would later capture not just the ZOZO Championship but also The Masters Tournament for his 15th major. Woods is a two-time winner of THE PLAYERS Championship (2001, 2013), which begins in two weeks. He is currently 25th in the FedExCup and 10th in the world.

Louis Oosthuizen in good form entering the Presidents CupLouis Oosthuizen in good form entering the Presidents Cup

SYDNEY, Australia – South African Louis Oosthuizen fell just short of winning the Australian Open but has positioned himself as the potential spearhead for Ernie Els ahead of the Presidents Cup. Already the only player on Els’ International Team with a winning record in the biennial team competition against the U.S., Oosthuizen produced a huge eagle on the final hole at The Australian Golf Club to make local Matt Jones sweat. RELATED: Inside the International’s dominating 1998 win | Internationals hoping for South African omen Jones – a former winner of the Houston Open – ultimately survived a drama-filled trip down the par-5 18th to secure his second national championship at the course he grew up on. Oosthuizen’s eagle left him with the round of the day, a 5-under 66 and finished at 14 under. But Jones dropped in a testy 5-foot par put after going from bunker, to woodchips, to a tight lie short of the green to win by a shot. Still, Oosthuizen showed he will be a force at this week’s Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne against Tiger Woods and his formidable U.S. Team. “I used this week as preparation for next and obviously I’ll take a lot of confidence out of this and hopefully we can pull it off next week,â€ Oosthuizen said. “I’m ready. Game face is on now and I’m ready.â€ Marc Leishman was the next best member of the International Team and finished in a tie for 10th. Cameron Smith was tied for 27th and defending champion Abraham Ancer was 33rd. “We’re ready to go, and looking forward to it,â€ Leishman said. “I’m pleased with the way I drove the ball and then the way I chipped. I putted well; I just wasn’t reading the greens awesome, but off the tee and around the greens I was pretty pleased with. “If I could take that over into next week and sharpen my irons up a little bit, should be good to go. It’s been a pretty easy week this week energy-wise, so we are excited about next week and hopefully we can play well.â€ Adam Scott and C.T. Pan failed to make the cut although Els was not concerned with their form. Byeong Hun An, Joaquin Niemann, Hideki Matsuyama, Haotong Li, Adam Hadwin and Sungjae Im all rested this week. “My long-term view is long-term form. I’ve picked guys who have played well for a long term.  One week or one round is not going to change anything in my view,â€ Els said. “The guys are quality players; they’ve made great strides in making the team and I believe in them. If they have a bad round or a bad tournament, it’s not changing my view on that.â€ Jones, fellow Australian Aaron Pike and Japanese amateur Takumi Kanaya all booked spots in the 2020 Open Championship at Royal St George’s from July 16-19 as the highest three players not already exempt.

Justin Thomas aids marriage proposal at Wells Fargo Championship pro-amJustin Thomas aids marriage proposal at Wells Fargo Championship pro-am

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Time will tell who winds up being the best man in Sean Powell’s wedding to Andrea Cota, which is unofficially set for the summer of 2019. Justin Thomas was best man for the proposal. “It all worked out great,â€ FedExCup leader Thomas said after one of the more unusual pro-am moments of his career. “And I’m really happy that I didn’t screw it up for him.â€ Thomas had just teed off at the par-4 opening hole at Quail Hollow Club, home of this week’s Wells Fargo Championship, when he walked to the gallery ropes and handed Powell a glove and Cota a golf ball. Powell, having choreographed everything beforehand with Thomas and officials from the PGA TOUR, knew what was up; Cota didn’t. She looked at the ball, on which Thomas had written, “Will you?â€ And she turned around to Powell, who was on one knee. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you,â€ he said. She accepted, and the highly anticipated moment, the planning for which began with Powell’s social media appeal to Thomas two months ago, had gone off without a hitch. “He sent me a direct message on Instagram and I just happened to be going through them one day and I read it,â€ Thomas said. “I said, ‘That sounds like a pretty cool thing, and it would be fun to be a part of.’â€ Thomas reached out to the TOUR to handle the details, and told Wells Fargo employee Powell to get in touch the week before the tournament. Meanwhile, Cota, a personal fitness coach, was talking to her sister, wondering aloud whether Powell might propose. She had an inkling it might be coming, but had no idea that the proposal would include Thomas. The first sign that something was up? “When he started walking over to Sean and was like, ‘Hey, how’s it going? It’s good to see you,’â€ she said. “I’m like, ‘Good to see you? How do you know him?’ I’m like, ‘What?’ And when he was like, ‘Is this Andrea?’ I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is happening.’â€ Powell and Cota knew one another through family and friends back in Sioux Falls, but Powell had moved to Minneapolis to begin his career. He moved back to South Dakota a year ago to be with family as his father battles Stage 4 lung cancer, and was scrolling through the dating app Bumble at the same time Cota was. As it turned out, they were more than compatible. “We went on three dates in two days,â€ Powell said. He knew he wanted to do something special for the proposal, and the wheels started turning when he attended the Waste Management Phoenix Open and saw Thomas earlier this season.   “He’s my favorite golfer,â€ Powell said, “and so I sent him a message, and five minutes later he sent a message back saying, ‘I want to help you out.’ I almost threw my phone.â€ He sent a message back saying, ‘I want to help you out.’ I almost threw my phone. Suddenly, this wacky pipe dream was real; only the specifics remained. Powell and Cota would be in Charlotte for Wells Fargo Championship week, staying with Powell’s brother. Thomas would be here, too, so Quail Hollow became the setting. But then what? A friend suggested Powell ask Thomas to toss the “proposalâ€ ball to them, but what if someone else caught it? Eventually, it was settled that Thomas would hand-deliver the glove and ball with the cameras rolling to capture everything. Bumble got wind of it and has pledged $5,000 to the honeymoon, and the happy couple toasted the happy news as they drank champagne outside the media center. Powell laughingly told Thomas he’ll gladly pay for the superstar’s plane ticket to attend the wedding. “He exemplifies what a golfer is and should be,â€ Powell said. “He’ll sign autographs. He engages with people. He engaged with me on social media; you know, he has like a half million people following him. “It’s like the lottery,â€ Powell added. “Winning the Powerball. You know what I mean?â€

Adam Scott strips off shoes to make stunning par save from waterAdam Scott strips off shoes to make stunning par save from water

Former champion Adam Scott gave early bird fans at The Honda Classic a thrill when he stripped off his shoes and pulled off a stunning par save from the water at PGA National. Scott's approach shot on the par-4 11th hole - his second of the round - found itself drifting right from his line and came down short and in the water hazard. But with the ball only partially submerged Scott decided to attempt to play it from the wet muddy lie - local alligators be damned! RELATED: Affect of water balls on Florida Swing "I blocked my 7-iron and when I got up there I figured I could play it, but I called in a rules official because incredibly there were some electrical cables in the penalty area around my ball that I needed to move," Scott explained to PGATOUR.com. "I was able to move them, get my shoes and socks off, roll the trousers up, get my waterproof jacket on and get in the water with my lob wedge. From there I just played it like a full bunker explosion shot and got it to about 12-feet." For a split second it looked like the veteran might overbalance on his follow through and go for a swim, but he showed great poise to stay relatively dry. Scott then converted the 11-foot, 10-inch par putt - a critical save given he'd already bogeyed his opening hole. "It took a little bit of time to get the pond mud off me but was certainly nice to make the putt. Easy par right?" he smiled. Scott is familiar with the water around the course having won the trophy in 2016 despite making a quadruple bogey with two water balls in the third round. He also entered this week tied with Hideki Matsuyama having the most water balls (11) of the 2021 Florida swing thus far. Thankfully for the 16-time PGA TOUR winner his 12th wet shot in the last few weeks didn't hurt him on the scorecard and he eventually signed for a steady 1-under 69. "You can survive hitting it in the water once or maybe twice for a tournament," Scott said Tuesday. "The experience of playing these Florida golf courses for 20 years, it’s inevitable you’re going to hit one in the water, especially around here when it’s windy. You’re going to have to accept it and do the best you can to get past that hole and rebuild." Scott wasn't the only player to get his gear off at the 11th on Thursday. Sebastian Cappelen also found himself in a similar predicament and decided to attempt the shot sans shoes and shirt. The bare-chested Dane - who did find the green but was unable to convert his par putt - brought back memories of former FedExCup champion Henrik Stenson playing a shot from the water at Doral in 2009 in his underwear. The greatest water shot on TOUR though surely must be that of Bill Haas in the 2011 TOUR Championship. In a playoff with Hunter Mahan - with $11.4million on the line - Haas got up and down from the hazard on the 17th hole to stay alive and won the FedExCup a hole later.
