Tiger Woods’ woes at Riviera continue

PACIFIC PALISAIDES, Calif. – Tournament host Tiger Woods will have to wait at least one more year for another chance to break his win drought at Riviera Country Club after a tough third round at The Genesis Invitational. After opening the tournament with rounds of 69-73 to sit 10 shots back of Matt Kuchar’s 36-hole lead, Woods left Friday night knowing he could ill afford any mistakes on the weekend if he was to make a charge up the leaderboard. But any thoughts of a vintage charge were thwarted early as he played his first seven holes in five-over par, including a disastrous four-putt for a double bogey on the par-4 13th, his fourth hole of the morning. Woods had a birdie attempt from 18-feet, four-inches but pulled it left. He then missed from two-feet, four-inches for par and three-feet, two-inches for bogey with power lip outs before finally getting it home from three-feet for a double. Related: Leaderboard | TOUR pros: My first time with Tiger | JT admits Tiger carried him at Presidents Cup No other venue has repelled Woods like Riviera – the 82-time PGA TOUR winner is in his 13th try in this tournament with a runner up in 1999 his best return. Riviera is where his PGA TOUR career began as a 16-year-old having grown up in nearby Cypress. Amazingly, it is the second time Woods has four-putted the 13th green at Riviera having also done so in the third round in 2000. It is the only green on record in his career that he has done so twice and comes one start after four-putting during the Farmers Insurance Open on the opening hole of Torrey Pines South. Four of his now 14 career four-putts have come since June 2018. “That was a lot of shots. I hit the ball quite a few times, especially on the greens, and it was a long day,â€ Woods said post round. “I didn’t putt well today at all. I didn’t have a feel for it, I didn’t see my lines, I couldn’t feel my pace and I was just off.â€ Woods finished the round with a 5-over 76 to drop to five over for the tournament and near the back of the pack of those making the cut. When asked of the positives, the 44-year-old could only wryly say, “Well, I’m done.â€ But then added, “It’s a new day tomorrow. That’s the way golf is, put it in the past and try to learn from what I did right and wrong. Obviously there wasn’t a whole lot I did right today, and figure it out for tomorrow. “I just need to… not throw away shots with wedges in my hand, not three-putt, four-putt. All the things that, you clean all that up, next thing you know, you add that up and I’m probably, what, 7, 8, 9 under, and that’s without doing anything great, just not doing any of the dumb things.â€ Woods did not commit to play in next week’s World Golf Championship – Mexico Championship and also is not sure of his next start after tomorrow’s final round. “That’s the fun part of trying to figure this whole comeback — how much do I play, when do I play, do I listen to the body or do I fight through it?â€ he said. “There are some things I can push and some things I can’t. “I feel stiff, but I have weeks like that, especially in the cold mornings like it was the other day. Don’t quite move as well and that’s just kind of how it’s going to go.â€

Cameron Young tipped to follow Zalatoris’ footsteps at BMW ChampionshipCameron Young tipped to follow Zalatoris’ footsteps at BMW Championship

PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year candidate Cameron Young is pulling the majority of action to win the BMW Championship as bettors believe he can follow in the footsteps of his college teammate Will Zalatoris and win for the first time on TOUR during the FedExCup Playoffs. Former teammates at Wake Forest, Zalatoris and Young have had similar early careers on the TOUR with tremendous success, especially in majors, but until Zalatoris’ win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship a week ago, both were winless. Young, who has golf odds of +2200 for this week’s BMW Championship, is a popular play at the BetMGM online sportsbook for it to be two straight wins for Demon Deacons. As of Wednesday morning, Young is pulling in the most tickets (9.2%) and handle (14.8%). The rookie has also seen his odds change dramatically after opening at +3300. He is the only player in double-digits in terms of handle percentage. Wilmington Country Club will play as a 7,534-yard par 71, which means it will be one of the longer courses of the season. In addition, it has narrow fairways and thick rough, which means this week should favor the longer hitters off the tee. Young enters the week ranked fourth in driving distance, averaging 318.6 yards. Zalatoris had three second place finishes this season before his win in Memphis but the 25-year-old Young boasts five runner up results this season, including at the Open Championship last month. For what it’s worth, Zalatoris has +1600 odds to win and is pulling in 4.3% of the tickets and 5.6% of the handle. Another popular play at BetMGM this week is Collin Morikawa. He is generating the third-most tickets (5.6%) and third-highest handle (7.5%). Although he does not have a win this season, he’s entering the week with some confidence. Morikawa made the second-most birdies (22) at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on the way to a T5. Current Handle & Tickets Handle 1. Cameron Young – 14.8% 2. Scottie Scheffler – 8.4% 3. Collin Morikawa – 7.5% 4. Justin Thomas – 7.3% 5. Jon Rahm – 6.3% Ticket 1. Cameron Young – 9.2% 2. Tony Finau – 5.7% 3. Collin Morikawa – 5.6% 4. Jon Rahm – 4.9% 5. Justin Thomas – 4.8% Former BMW Championship winner Jon Rahm (+1200) is another player trending in the right direction. He finished T-5 last week in Memphis, with all four rounds in the 60s. His length (third in driving distance), should serve him well. Despite Scottie Scheffler (+1600) missing the cut last week, he’s still generating some action with the second-highest handle (8.4%). Although at a different course, Patrick Cantlay is the defending champion. He has +1600 odds to win and is only drawing 2.3% of tickets and 2% of the handle. * Visit BetMGM.com for terms and conditions. 21+ years of age or older to wager. Late birdie blitz keeps DeChambeau in front at European OpenLate birdie blitz keeps DeChambeau in front at European Open

HAMBURG, Germany — Bryson DeChambeau reeled off four birdies in the last seven holes to shoot a 4-under 68 and remain top of the leaderboard after the second round of the European Open on Friday. The 24-year-old American, who led overnight, finished with a 10-under total of 134. He is one stroke ahead of Richard McEvoy of England (65) and Matthias Schwab (67) of Austria. Masters champion Patrick Reed (66) shared the fourth spot on 136 with Romain Wattel of France (69) and David Drysdale of Scotland (67). “I’m absolutely satisfied,” DeChambeau said. “The wind made playing pretty tough out there and I was fortunate enough to hit it in the right spots, miss it in the right spots, get a couple of lucky breaks and take advantage of them when I needed to. “It wasn’t my best form … it was a little frustrating off the tee today. I thought I’d worked something out yesterday, and it worked a little bit, but I’ve got to go back to the range and work a little harder.” Reed benefited from an improved display on the greens. “It was a lot better compared to yesterday,” said the American golfer. “I felt like I could go into attack mode, and attack some flags, and my putter’s working. When my putter gets going I’m able to make birdies.”
