DeChambeau’s ‘hard reset’ before THE NORTHERN TRUST includes big equipment changesDeChambeau’s ‘hard reset’ before THE NORTHERN TRUST includes big equipment changes

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – Bryson DeChambeau comes into the 2019 NORTHERN TRUST as the defending champion at the event, but he’s also coming off of four missed cuts in his nine starts since The Masters. As DeChambeau explained to the media in a press conference on Tuesday, he took off last week’s Wyndham Championship to figure things out and “do a little bit of a hard reset.â€ For DeChambeau, that meant a trip to Carlsbad, California — home of Cobra Golf’s headquarters – to work with Cobra’s R&D team on clubs that can be more beneficial for his game. While remaining mum on details, DeChambeau expressed that he was positive about what the group came up with; not only for himself, but for golfers worldwide. “We found some very interesting results that will be of future help to amateur golfers across the world,â€ DeChambeau said in a press conference. He did acknowledge, however, that making “pretty drasticâ€ equipment changes for the future doesn’t just happen overnight. RELATED: Equipment gallery: THE NORTHERN TRUST | Tiger switches to new wedge “We don’t have the full solution of it yet,â€ DeChambeau said. “We can’t just make a head right on the spot. It’s going to be a month before we can do things we need to do. There was a minor improvement with the tools we had at that point – not just minor, but pretty drastic — but it can even get better as time goes on. That time is necessary for me to keep learning and getting better.â€ In terms of immediate solutions, in order to compete at THE NORTHERN TRUST this week, DeChambeau is making a few changes. While he’s still using Cobra King MB (muscleback) irons, which he started using at the 2019 Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, he’s decided to switch back into True Temper Dynamic Gold X7 shafts instead of the S400 shafts that he had been using since the Masters. He said that the “X7’s had a much tighter dispersion from right-to-left.â€ Also, he’s switched back into Cobra’s King F9 Speedback driver, instead of the King LTD driver he used at the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Using the adjustable hosel on the F9 Speedback driver, DeChambeau has taken the loft down from 7.5 degrees to 6 degrees, and he also shifted weight into the heel. These adjustments should work to lower spin and launch and help him turn the ball from right-to-left. DeChambeau says the changes, and what he helped work on in Carlsbad on his week off, “will pay dividends this week and for future weeks.â€ He’s currently 18th in the FedExCup standings.
