Muñoz overcomes self-doubt at Sanderson Farms

The Sanderson Farms Championship, in its first iteration as a full FedExCup event, gave us a 17-year-old in his pro debut (Akshay Bhatia), a veteran showing he might yet crawl out of a slump (Zach Johnson) and, ultimately, an exciting International shootout between a bevy of Presidents cup hopefuls. Ultimately, Sebastián Muñoz from Colombia nudged out PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Sungjae Im in a playoff at the Country Club of Jackson. Welcome to the Monday Finish. Related: What’s in Muñoz’s bag? | The stats behind Muñoz’s first TOUR win THREE KEYS TO SUCCESS 1. A blistering 9-under 63 on Saturday was the catalyst to Muñoz having a chance at his first title. Having opened 70-67, it was Saturday’s nine-birdie effort that sent him surging into contention. 2. Recovery from missed fairways. Muñoz finished 42nd in driving accuracy after hitting 29 fairways, but he was 12th in greens hit (57 of 72). His iron play was good enough that he didn’t have to make a putt longer than 15 feet for any of his 21 birdies. 3. A little motivation and advice from a friend. After seeing Joaquin Niemann win the week before at A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier, Muñoz talked to his friend about closing the deal on the plane ride to Mississippi. “Him winning last week was the last piece of the puzzle that I needed to know that we’re good enough to compete, that we’re PGA TOUR members and we play to win,â€ Muñoz said. OBSERVATIONS The path to the PGA TOUR is clear cut for some. Some playera are born into golf families with unlimited access to facilities. Of course, they all work hard to get there – talent alone is never enough. But then there are the other stories, ones of players who had to overcome much steeper odds. Sebastián Muñoz never thought he’d make the PGA TOUR, let alone win. Do yourself a favor and read about his improbably journey here.  Ernie Els was probably a little concerned a month ago as he started thinking about the options for his four captain’s picks for December’s Presidents Cup at Australia’s Royal Melbourne. While there are plenty of eligible players he can choose from, including those with pedigree as impressive as Jason Day and Branden Grace, the play of those players had been a little questionable. Over the last two weeks, his smile must have grown, as more and more names are making a case to be selected. Joaquin Niemann and Sebastián Muñoz have both now won on the PGA TOUR. Sungjae Im continues to contend. Ben An has reemerged as a serious contender. The next few weeks are going to be huge for those trying to prove their worth. Read more about potential International team picks here. Akshay Bhatia may have missed the cut in his pro debut, but remember, he’s just 17. The youngster had a chance to make the weekend had he made birdie on his final hole – a pretty impressive feat in itself for the youngest-ever Walker Cup competitor. Ultimately, he missed out, but with starts over the next few weeks up his sleeve, it was a great learning experience. Should be fun to follow his on-course education. Read about Bhatia’s optimism moving forward here.  QUOTEBOARD “I never really thought I was going to be a PGA TOUR professional. I didn’t think I was that good.” – winner Sebastián Muñoz “I’m trying to treat each week as a phenomenal opportunity to get better.â€ – two-time major winner Zach Johnson, who had his first top-25 finish (T14) since April. “I haven’t played a skins format in quite some time, so it will be fun to try something a little different and add a few strategic elements as we compete. There has already been some friendly banter between us and that will continue until we get to the first tee.â€ – Tiger Woods after it was confirmed he will take on Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama in a skins game in Japan.  SOCIAL SNAPSHOT

Tiger Woods ‘cleared’ for full practice following knee surgeryTiger Woods ‘cleared’ for full practice following knee surgery

A month after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee, Tiger Woods has been cleared to start full practice. During an interview with Good Morning America’s Michael Strahan earlier this week, Woods said he “got the clearance last week to start full practiceâ€ and “played nine holes the other day.â€ RELATED: Tiger chases Snead’s 82 PGA TOUR wins Woods underwent the latest procedure on his knee last month, the fifth knee surgery of his career. Dr. Vern Cooley, who performed the surgery, said at the time he expected Woods to make a full recovery. Woods said the knee is “soreâ€ after his recent practice round but looks forward to getting back into playing shape. “Now I can start lifting and getting my muscle back and getting my weight up and doing all that stuff again,â€ Woods said in the interview. Woods’ next start on the PGA TOUR is expected to be The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in Chiba, Japan, Oct. 24-27. He’s also the U.S. captain for The Presidents Cup in December and has not ruled out the possibility of being a playing captain. Woods will make his four captain’s picks in early November after the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions. Although his back has been the focus of concern for much of the last six-plus years, this marks the fifth time that Woods, 43, has had his left knee operated on.  Woods’ first left-knee operation was to remove a benign tumor in 1994. The second and third were arthroscopic procedures in 2002 and in April of 2008. He was told of two stress fractures in his tibia in May of 2008, won the U.S. Open in June, and eight days later had a fourth surgery, on his ACL. He missed the remainder of the 2008 season. For a player who missed significant time from 2014-17, when he had successful back-fusion surgery, Woods has been relatively healthy the last two seasons.     At the 2018 TOUR Championship at East Lake, he notched his long-awaited 80th victory, the exclamation point on a terrific comeback season for a player whose career once seemed to be over. His 2019 season was highlighted by his Masters win, his 15th major title. With 81 PGA TOUR wins, he’s now one behind Sam Snead’s record. That was mostly it, though, for his 2018-19 season as Woods admitted to being worn out by the heroic victory at Augusta National. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black and was T21 at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, despite having won on both courses. He missed the cut at The Open Championship and withdrew from THE NORTHERN TRUST with a mild oblique strain. Although he won the 1999 and 2006 PGA Championships at Medinah, Woods never contended there, either, with a T37 at the BMW Championship. At 42nd in the FedExCup, his season was over.

Brooks Koepka struggles with putter, but still within shouting distance in MemphisBrooks Koepka struggles with putter, but still within shouting distance in Memphis

Brooks Koepka looked in control when he made the turn in the second round of the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He was 10 under par and in the lead after hitting his first nine greens of the round. He struggled with his putter on the back nine, including a three-putt from 3 feet, and will begin in the weekend four shots behind leader Brendon Todd, though. RELATED: Full leaderboard | Rejuvenated Todd leads WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational “I just putted bad,” Koepka said. “It wasn’t really anything other than that. Felt stress‑free other than just missing some short ones.” Koepka, who had just had one bogey in his first 27 holes, shot 3-over 38 on his final nine Friday. He made a double-bogey on the third hole after that three-putt from close range, then added two more bogeys and one birdie. He missed two putts inside 5 feet Friday, and made just one of the six attempts he faced from 5-10 feet. Koepka lost 4.6 strokes on the greens Friday after gaining more than three strokes with his putter in the first round. Thursday was a promising start to his relationship with putting coach Phil Kenyon, who Koepka began working with on the eve of play at TPC Southwind. Koepka’s iron play remained solid in the second round. He hit 15 greens Friday, one more than he did Thursday. He leads the field in greens hit (29 of 36) and Strokes Gained: Approach (+6.33). Koepka is 155th in the FedExCup standing with just three weeks remaining in the regular season. He is seeking his first win since last year’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. “It’s fine, I’ll be just fine,” he said. “I wouldn’t worry.”
