Ancer, Pan look to check FedExCup and Presidents Cup box in one go

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Abraham Ancer and C.T. Pan know the numbers are right there staring them in the face no matter how hard they try to ignore them. Both sit in or around important FedExCup bubbles and both are also in the mix for the International Presidents Cup team. Looking at projections and worrying about the scenarios though is not something they want to focus on. Good golf will take care of things. Finally, after what had been some lean times for the pair, they have kicked into gear when it counts. Ancer started the Playoffs in 67th in the FedExCup knowing he must play well at THE NORTHERN TRUST to stay inside the top 70 for the BMW Championship. Rounds of 67-65 have the Mexican at 10 under through two rounds, behind only Jordan Spieth in the clubhouse after the morning wave Friday. Pan has posted 68-67 to sit at 7 under and inside the top 10 at this stage. He started the Playoffs in 35th position knowing he has two weeks to push into the top 30 to ensure a place at the TOUR Championship. Furthermore, Pan (eighth) and Ancer (10th) now have an incredible chance to wrap up a spot in Ernie Els’ International Team for the Dec 12-15 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne. The top eight players secure spots after next week’s BMW Championship. With Jason Day (seventh) set to miss the cut and Cameron Smith (sixth) in danger of doing the same at THE NORTHERN TRUST Pan and Ancer are in position to jump the Australians on the points list. “Going into the tournament sitting at 67 I just have to play a solid tournament. That should be fine,â€ Ancer said. “But I don’t really think about it that much while I’m playing. I know if I just do a good job with my game plan, I should be just fine. “The Presidents Cup is definitely in the back of my mind as one of the goals for the whole year. But I think if I just keep thinking about it, it just adds pressure to what I’m doing and it’s not going to help. I just have to play solid golf and I’ll have a good chance to sneak in there.â€ Since winning the Australian Open and finishing runner up at the ISPS Handa Melbourne World Cup of Golf late last year Ancer has been on Els’ radar for the biennial teams competition. But with only one top 10 on the PGA TOUR since his victory down under he has slid out of the automatic zone. Els has made it known he’d like Ancer to play his way on to the team. Pan won the RBC Heritage in April and was third in the Charles Schwab Challenge in May but has not finished better than a T36 at the Travelers Championship since.  “Getting into the top 30 has always been my goal. I haven’t done it yet but I won for the first time this year and that was a dream come true. Hopefully I can double down on that and make another dream come true,â€ Pan said. “The Presidents Cup is definitely on my mind but all we can do is hit one good shot at a time. I definitely want to be part of the team and play my best for captain Els.â€

Sleeper Picks: Sony Open in HawaiiSleeper Picks: Sony Open in Hawaii

Greyson Sigg (+300 for a Top 20) … While nothing ever is guaranteed, it’s still not too surprising when a PGA TOUR sophomore with pedigree figures it out. His rookie season of 2021-22 was solid but unspectacular, but the 27-year-old already has made quick work of this season with a trio of top 15s among six paydays in as many starts. It includes a T15 at Sea Island that can comp to Waialae. Finished T42 in his debut here last year. He was in position to strike for a top 25 or better but got upended by a closing 70. If he turns that lesson into lemonade, then we’ll witness that this week. Oh, and it can’t hurt that his Georgia Bulldogs just defended their national title on the gridiron on Monday night. Andrew Putnam (+175 for a Top 20) … As a former runner-up at Waialae (2019), he already was in our crosshairs, but it’s his only top 25 in six attempts. That speaks to what can happen in a shootout no matter the level of comfort. So, his experience and one-time podium finish serve as supportive evidence to continue to elevate expectations for the 33-year-old. After trotting through the tape of the 2021-22 season, he’s opened the new campaign 8-for-8 with a T2 at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP punctuating three top 25s. Robby Shelton (+350 for a Top 20) … The 27-year-old went to work in the fall and already has proven that he won’t squander his return to the PGA TOUR. With a T10 at The RSM Classic to highlight four top 25s contributing to his 6-for-7 record, he’s 45th in FedExCup points on arrival for his third appearance at Waialae. Finished T25 with four steady red numbers in his last trip in 2021. The last time he appeared as a Sleeper, he placed T15 at the Shriners three months ago. Kramer Hickok (+800 for a Top 20) … Yes, he’s in a slump, so, yes, this is an aggressive send, but it’s all about the fit over form. It’s one of those opportunities to trust in the professional athlete to overcome what, on paper, screams for us to run in the other direction, or at least abstain. Since 2020, he’s 3-for-3 at Waialae with a T19 in 2021 and a T20 last year. All nine of his most recent loops of the course are in the 60s. Another driver of the nod is that he’s had a break to reflect and reset without giving away any positioning in the FedExCup standings. Kazuki Higa … There’s no argument that all competition is relative, but when we’re exploring potentially hidden value, he’s a fantastic find. Fresh off a four-win season on his native Japan Golf Tour where he ran away with the money title. His most recent victory was by three strokes at the prestigious Dunlop Phoenix in mid-November that included notables such as Mito Pereira (2nd), Tom Kim (T4) and Corey Conners (T11). At 67th in the Official World Golf Ranking, Higa is the only Japanese talent inside the top 100 other than Sony Open in Hawaii defending champion Hideki Matsuyama (21st). Oh, and he’s also on the bounce after receiving an invitation to compete in his first Masters this year. Odds were sourced on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023. For live odds, visit BetMGM. Tom Hoge’s journey from Fargo to TOURTom Hoge’s journey from Fargo to TOUR

For the record, Tom Hoge has seen the movie. And let’s be real. Isn’t that what you want to ask him when you find out he’s from Fargo, North Dakota? Yes, that Fargo. The city where Hoge grew up is the setting for the darkly comic 1996 crime film written and directed by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. The quirky movie, which stars William H. Macy and Frances McDormand, who won an Academy Award for her role, has become something of a cult classic. And no matter where he goes – Hoge now lives in Fort Worth, Texas – when he tells someone where he’s from the scenario is the same. “The first reaction is usually the movie, yes,â€ Hoge says with a wry smile. “And then the second statement is that I’m the first person they’ve ever met from North Dakota. “So I’m kind of ready for those two all the time.â€ Of course, with former North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz leading the Philadelphia Eagles into the Super Bowl on Sunday, the  sports landscape is changing a bit. But he grew up in Bismark and the only movie by that name is a 1940 film about the prime minister of Prussia. So, it’s just not the same. That said, “Fargoâ€ wasn’t filmed in North Dakota’s most populous city. The movie was actually shot around Minneapolis-St. Paul and in the town of Brainerd, Minnesota, which is about 90 minutes away from Fargo. “It’s kind of more out in the country than we would like to claim in Fargo,â€ Hoge said with a smile. “But it was pretty funny. A little different. Dark humor, for sure.â€ Fargo’s visitors center even has an exhibit that includes several of the original scripts, as well as few props. Among those is the wood chipper which the organization’s website calls the “most notorious prop in cinematic history.â€  Hoge actually was born in Statesville, North Carolina, but moved to Fargo when he was 6 months old. He lived in North Dakota full-time until 2007 when he went to Fort Worth to play golf at Texas Christian University. He’s lived there ever since. At its best, the golf season in Fargo – which was voted as “America’s Toughest Weather Cityâ€ in a 2011 poll on The Weather Channel — only runs from mid-April to mid-November. Hoge can remember high school tournaments as late as in May that were snowed out but he made the most of the days when Mother Nature cooperated. “I kind of laugh, frost delays in Phoenix and places like that when it’s 40 or 45 degrees,â€ Hoge says. “I remember days out playing golf when it was 25 degrees in Fargo. “The golf courses probably didn’t like it that much but I was always trying to get out there and play.â€ Hoge started playing golf when he was 3 years old. He and his brother Charlie would tag along, hitting a few shots here and there, when their parents went to Fargo Country Club. He was inspired by Tiger Woods’ first Masters win and by the time he was 10, Hoge could be found hanging out at the golf course whenever there wasn’t any snow on the ground. “It doesn’t sound like it, Fargo, North Dakota being a golf town, but our golf club had a par-three course where the holes were 60 to 125 yards long and kids could go play that as much as they wanted,â€ he says. “It really was a good spot to grow up and learn how to play.â€ In fact, Hoge estimates, he’s one of 5 or 10 golfers from Fargo who went on to play NCAA Division I golf despite being limited by the relatively short season. A couple played on the Nationwide Tour, as did Hoge, but he is the first to make it to the PGA TOUR full-time. “There were a few times in the winter where I’d be trying to go to play in tournaments in Arizona or somewhere and there’d be snow on the ground,â€ Hoge remembers. “But I’d just kind of shovel the snow away and hit a few balls. “On more than one occasion I would say I’d be the only person on the course every day. But I always wanted to play on the PGA TOUR so I’d use whatever opportunities I had to get better.â€ When the snow piled up – Fargo had to dig out from a record 117 inches of the white stuff during the winter of 1996-97 – Hoge did have another option. He could go to the Sports Bubble and hit off mats at the indoor driving range. While it may not have been satisfying seeing the ball just go 50 yards or so, it was a good place to work on the fundamentals of the game. And it was warm. “So there’s parts when I look back on it growing up in Fargo that were very beneficial to me,â€ Hoge says. “Obviously, you’re limited just not being able to practice and get the experience other guys would in Texas and Florida or other parts of the country. “But it was a good spot. You learn work ethic up there pretty good just because your time is so much shorter than everyone else.â€ Hoge, who is quick to point out that he doesn’t miss the snow or the winters in North Dakota, is currently in the midst of the best year of his TOUR career. He’s had two top-10s in eight starts, including a tie for third at the Sony Open in Hawaii where he held the third-round lead. The way Hoge sees it, weathering the brutal winters in a city that is just 160 miles from the Canadian border, builds character and that has helped him along the way. “If you’d look at kind of the way my career’s been there’s been a lot of times where I’d been struggling and kind of close to losing status,â€ Hoge says. “And going back to the Web.com Tour finals this year I had to birdie seven of the last 12 holes to get back out on the PGA TOUR. “And I think there’s some of that fight that growing up in North Dakota instilled in me.â€
