Roach shoots 64 in opening round of Barbasol Championship, seeing hard work start to pay off

LEXINGTON, Kent. – Turns out, the entry in his online bio is a little dated. Wes Roach actually has been to New York City. Once. But he’d love to make a return trip — particularly if it meant playing in the first event of the FedExCup Playoffs. And if he keeps playing the way he did on Thursday in the opening round of the Barbasol Championship, the former Duke standout just might be making his Playoffs debut. Roach fired a bogey-free 64 with matching nines of 32 at the Champions Course at Keene Trace Golf Club to finish two strokes off the lead held by J.T. Poston. He hit 11 of 14 fairways, all but two greens in regulation and ranked third in Strokes Gained: Total. “I played solid,â€ Roach acknowledged. “Hit a lot of fairways, gave myself some good opportunities with some wedges and short irons, and was able to hit some quality shots, and putted nice.  So yeah, everything was pretty good today.â€ Actually, Roach has been playing well for the last six weeks or so. In his last five starts, he’s finished 11th or better three times – shooting four rounds in the 60s each time. “Yeah, I’m starting to play a little better,â€ Roach said. “Been working awfully hard.  The first part of the year was a little bit tough, but had to keep grinding away.  You know, still a lot of work to do, a lot of golf to play, but I’m happy with the start.â€ Roach, who lives in Knoxville, Tennessee, is pleased to see the work he’s done with his swing coach, Brad Rose, pay dividends. He’s also been working on his fitness with Randy Myers since the beginning of March – which could come into play with heat indexes in triple digits expected the next three days. “My body’s moving pretty good, warms up pretty good with the heat,â€ Roach said. “I like playing in the heat.  I’m not too afraid of that at all.â€ The payoff could be job security for the 2019-20 season, should he solidify his spot in the top 125 in the FedExCup. He came to Kentucky ranked No. 124 with this tournament and two others remaining in the regular season. Oh, and a second trip to New York City, this time to to play in THE NORTHERN TRUST at Liberty National.  “I’m happy, but there’s a lot of golf left,â€ Roach said. “I’m very happy with the performance today, but can’t be satisfied, I guess.  There’s still a long ways to go.â€

What The Pros Are Playing: Valspar ChampionshipWhat The Pros Are Playing: Valspar Championship

We patrolled the Copperhead Course prior to this week’s Valspar Championship to see what the pros have in their bags for one of the toughest tracks on the PGA TOUR. We spotted no shortage of creative attempts to improve putting, plenty of testing, and a combo set that should be an inspiration to all amateurs. Putting mats are where it’s at Putting mats are quickly picking up steam on TOUR. Players used to use shafts or alignment rods to work on their setup and the path of their stroke. These mats are a simpler way to accomplish the same objective. The mats can be quickly and easily set up and they are lightweight and compact. Let this be a lesson for every golfer out there that even the best golfers in the world work on putting fundamentals week-in and week-out. DJ is sticking with the TaylorMade Brandon 1 Dustin Johnson looks to be sticking with a new TaylorMade Brandon 1 prototype putter built with an LA Golf graphite putter shaft. He initially put this club in play for the final round of the RBC Heritage. “I really like it. It’s got a different shaft in it and a different head, but rolled good, so we’re going to keep it up,” Johnson said after shooting a Sunday 66 at Harbour Town. He gained more than three strokes on the greens that day, shooting his best score since the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January. This is the same prototype putter Tommy Fleetwood put into play a couple of weeks ago too (image below via TaylorMade). Nobody is going to confuse clubs with Patrick Reed One of the great benefits of having your own signature iron set is that no one is going to mistake their bag for yours. That’s certainly the case for Patrick Reed, who has his own signature set of blades from Japanese manufacturer Grindworks. Adam Hadwin like to supersize his combos Adam Hadwin isn’t really known as being a big gearhead in the traditional sense, but his approach to building his combo iron set is something a lot of golfers can learn from. Hadwin’s Callaway iron set consists of three different models, which include the Apex MB (blade), Apex TCB, and an older model Apex UT. This is a perfect example of using the right tools to fine-tune a bag and achieve proper distance gapping. Ian Poulter is testing drivers Titleist staffer Ian Poulter was spotted with two TSi series drivers in the bag on Tuesday of the Valspar Championship, and although we don’t know the exact reason for testing, it could be that he is trying to pick up a bit more distance off the tee by using a longer shaft. Ian currently ranks 27th on TOUR in driving accuracy but is well back in distance and outside the top 200. A few extra yards could go a long way for the Ryder Cup stalward.

Tiger Woods’ partner literally couldn’t believe what he was seeingTiger Woods’ partner literally couldn’t believe what he was seeing

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — Tiger Woods’ playing partner in Saturday’s third round, an obscure 36-year-old South African journeyman who plays on the Japan Tour named Shaun Norris, was mesmerized not only by what he witnessed from Woods but by the madness that surrounds Woods. “It’s absolutely crazy to think so many people can follow a person, Norris said. “It’s like playing with a mythical creature. It doesn’t feel real. Norris sounded bullish on where Woods’ game is and his chances to win again. “He’s really hitting the ball well and I think he’s moving in the right direction again,’’ Norris said. “I don’t think he’s very far away from really taking everybody on again. You can see that he knows
