Triple, eagle highlight Rory McIlroy’s topsy-turvy start to TOUR ChampionshipTriple, eagle highlight Rory McIlroy’s topsy-turvy start to TOUR Championship

ATLANTA – Rory McIlroy is seeking history at this week’s TOUR Championship as he tries to become the first three-time winner of the FedExCup. McIlroy arrived at East Lake ranked seventh in the FedExCup after wins at THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT and RBC Canadian Open. He had top-10s in all four majors and finished outside the top 25 just three times in his 15 starts, a level of consistency that was reminiscent of his second FedExCup-winning season, in 2019. “I’m back to playing the golf that I’m used to playing and the golf that I know that I can play,” McIlroy said two weeks earlier at the first event of the FedExCup Playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. “This year feels very similar to the way I played in 2019. It’s a carbon copy in terms of the consistency and the numbers and the strokes gained numbers, but my finishes in the majors have been better and that’s been a real positive looking ahead into next year and the future.” McIlroy started this week six shots back of FedExCup leader Scottie Scheffler, a large deficit but not an insurmountable one. McIlroy should know. He was five back to start the 2019 TOUR Championship, the first one using the Starting Strokes format. His 72-hole score of 267 was the lowest of the week by three shots and gave him a four-shot win over Xander Schauffele. The gap between McIlroy and Scheffler quickly grew Thursday, however, after McIlroy hit his opening tee shot out of bounds. He made a triple-bogey on the first hole and a bogey on the next. He didn’t make his first par until the seventh hole, sandwiching a bogey on the fourth hole between birdies on Nos. 3 and 5. Then he eagled the par-5 sixth by holing a 35-yard pitch shot from the rough. Another birdie on the eighth hole got him to even par for the day but he bogeyed No. 9 to make the turn in 1-over 36. McIlroy and Tiger Woods, who earlier this week announced a partnership to start an indoor, data-driven golf league, are the only players to win the FedExCup twice.

For surging Jordan Spieth, progress means a return to swing of his youthFor surging Jordan Spieth, progress means a return to swing of his youth

SAN ANTONIO — Jordan Spieth continues to look for an older version of himself. The search shows moments of success. He shot 2-under-par 70 on a gusty Friday afternoon at the Valero Texas Open. He enters the third round with share of second place at 7 under par, two shots behind the leader, Cameron Tringale. Winless since 2017, the 27-year-old Spieth will again be a factor on the weekend in 2021. He often has been since early February at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. That was the week his work toward finding his older self — the golf swing of his youth — took a beneficial turn. He started rehearsing a move on the practice range at TPC Scottsdale in an effort to shallow the plane of his downswing. He wanted to swing like he was that freshman in 2012 at the University of Texas, beating Justin Thomas in the final match of the NCAA National Championship. RELATED: Full leaderboard | Tringale leads by two at Valero Texas Open "A swing feel that’s kind of like an artistic motion," is how he explained Friday, "like I almost can see it happening from behind me as I’m feeling it." The Valero Texas Open is his seventh start since embracing the drill. He's had three Top 5 finishes, a tie for 15th and two wins last week at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play, where he lost in the Round of 16. For those anticipating a return to form for the 11-time winner from Dallas, the trend inspires hope. He is trying, he said, "to go back in time." He wants to find his swing of his 15-year-old self, or at least the one that brough him so much acclaim so soon. Spieth wants to reverse "essentially everything," he said, "all the bad habits I got into." He said his attack on the ball got too steep after 2017, when he won three tournaments, including The Open Championship. Then came all the questions and doubts. "I could sit here and tell you six different things I'm thinking about," he said. "I want it to be one or two." He appears, at times, to have achieved that simplicity and purity. He shot 5-under 67 on Thursday at TPC San Antonio, seven birdies against two bogeys. He birdied his first two holes Friday. He was 2 under after nine. He expected stress and it came. Texas in the springtime is a windy place. He made bogey at the 11th and the 13th. But he followed those with birdies at the next two, which included an approach on the 459-yard par-four 15th to 4 feet. Spieth coasted through the last three holes, wind and all, with straight pars. "I’m really pleased with where things are at, but they’re not where I want them to be at," he said. "I’m trying to kind of take it slowly and patiently and reward myself, be excited about the good ones and not get too down about the bad ones." So on goes the search. "I’m really just trying to go back in time structurally to a place that I’ve been," he said. "Trying to work backwards."

Phil Mickelson still chasing Ryder Cup berth but would accept vice-captain rolePhil Mickelson still chasing Ryder Cup berth but would accept vice-captain role

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Phil Mickelson, a staple of every Ryder Cup team since 1995, is still trying to force his way into Steve Stricker’s line up but confirmed he’d accept a vice-captains role should he fail to make the squad. Mickelson sits 19th on the U.S. team points list with the top six automatic picks confirmed following the BMW Championship this week. Stricker will then select six more members to round out the squad after the TOUR Championship. After an opening round 4-under 68 at Caves Valley Mickelson needs a huge final three rounds to make a surge into Stricker’s thinking and even qualify for the TOUR Championship. The veteran came in as the last man qualified at 70th in the FedExCup and needs to finish in the top 3 to advance. As his second-round tee time approached he sat eight shots off the lead. “The only way for me to have a realistic chance of being picked is to get into the TOUR Championship and then play well in the TOUR Championship,” Mickelson said. “I’m certainly a long shot I would say, but I’m starting to play well, and if I can put together three good rounds, you never know.” Of course Stricker can pick anyone he likes and may yet still decide Mickelson’s experience, and the fact he proved his winning prowess by becoming the oldest major champion ever at the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in May, should be part of his squad. Mickelson was on winning teams in 1999, 2008 and 2016 but has lost nine times and holds a 18-22-7 record in 47 matches which is the record for most played and most losses. When asked directly about taking up a position amongst Stricker’s captaincy team that includes Davis Love III, Zach Johnson and Jim Furyk at this time, Mickelson admitted he’d consider it. “I love being a part of the Ryder Cup in any way, shape or form, so of course. But I’m not thinking about that right now,” he said.
