Tiger Woods finds success with familiar equipment setup

The magnitude of Tiger Woods’ win at the TOUR Championship cannot be understated. Last April, it was unclear the 14-time major winner would ever return to the course following L5-S1 spinal fusion back surgery that clouded the future of his golf career — one that had been marred by numerous back procedures over the previous three years.  Just 17 months later, Woods, who called himself “A Walking Miracle earlier this year,” returned to the TOUR winner’s circle for the 80th time in his career.  It was a win that not only validated all of the tireless work and preparation Woods put in behind the scenes to get his body in shape to compete again but the grind he underwent to find the perfect equipment setup — an important piece of the puzzle that took nearly a full season to figure out.  For a player who’s used to making equipment changes at a glacial pace, this season forced Woods to get comfortable with the idea of undergoing wholesale changes when he arrived at Medalist Golf Club, his home course in Hobe Sound, Florida, last December for his first official testing session with TaylorMade since signing a 13-club equipment deal at the beginning of 2017.  Woods worked through a myriad of clubs on that particular day, including different driver builds, a prototype 6-iron tailor-made to his specifications and a new utility iron. For someone who never embraced adjustable drivers — Woods always opted for a glued, non-adjustable hosel — the session felt like a crash course in acclimating to new equipment, technology and getting on the same page with TaylorMade reps.  “One of the things I think I’ve really done over the years is that I’ve been pretty ardent about playing a product that is better than what I’m using, and all of the companies I’ve been with, they all know that,” Woods told PGATOUR.COM during an exclusive interview after the testing session. “I will give it my best efforts to try and put it in, but it’s going to take a little time sometimes.”  When Woods resurfaced two months later at the Farmers Insurance Open, TaylorMade’s M3 driver was the newest addition to the bag. Woods continued using the driver during the season while making incremental changes to the two adjustable weights in the sole, before settling on a low spin and launch orientation with the weights centrally located in the center track.  What started with minor changes to the driver weights quickly progressed to new TW Phase1 prototype irons at the Wells Fargo Championship and two Milled Grind wedges at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide. Woods even tinkered with the shaft in his TaylorMade Tour Preferred UDI — along with briefly using a GAPR LO driving iron during The Open Championship — going from True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 steel to Mitsubishi Tensei White graphite and then back to steel, albeit in a higher-launching Dynamic Gold AMT package.  The irons and wedges, for as tough as Woods is on new equipment during the testing process, weren’t all that difficult to figure out.  Aside from a CG adjustment that needed to be made on the irons following the initial testing session at Medalist, former Nike master craftsman Mike Taylor — who now runs Artisan Golf but still grinds Woods’ irons and wedges on the side — was able to get the iron and wedge shaping to match up with his previous Nike set.  Even a shift away from Nike’s ball line to Bridgestone’s Tour B XS didn’t seem to phase Woods. And the ball always seems to be a tricky part for most players.  There’s no doubt Woods made strides on the course this season with new equipment and a different golf ball, but it seems fitting for a player who considers himself old-school when it comes to testing and equipment, that the two most important pieces of the puzzle were a putter that’s been by his side since 1999, and a driver shaft he used previously during the 2013-14 season.  Outside of his struggles off the tee, Woods failed to find his stroke with the putter midway through the season, prompting to bench his Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS blade for TaylorMade’s TP Black Coper Ardmore 3 at Quicken Loans National. The mallet represented just the second time in Woods’ career that he’d used something other than an Anser-style blade.  It felt like a move made out of desperation at the time, as Woods attempted to inject some life into his flat stick. But once the honeymoon period wore off, the mallet was benched in Boston during the Dell Technologies Championship for a TaylorMade TP Black Copper Ardmore 3 putter that looked eerily similar to Woods’ Newport 2.  One week later, Woods shelved the putter at the BMW Championship for the Newport 2 and things suddenly started to click again.  “I know the release point and I know how it swings and my body morphed into a position where it understands where it needs to be to release the putter,” Woods said.  “I’ve hit hundreds of millions of putts. I’ve had it since ’99. I’ve hit putts with it. I just — my body just remembers it. When I go away from it — and, you know, when I was using the Nike putter I always bring it out and hit putts with it. Sometimes it works but it just feels very familiar to me.” The brief time away seemed to be exactly what Woods and his putter needed, as he finished the season ranked second in Strokes Gained: Putting at East Lake en route to taking home the TOUR Championship for the third time in his career. The driver shaft proved to be the final piece of the puzzle for Woods, who rotated between numerous models during the season before settling on a familiar profile in Mitsubishi’s Diamana D+ White Board. The move came on the heels of a significant change for Woods, who opted for a counterbalance Tensei CK Pro Orange part over a non-counterbalance part to gain more club head speed. What Woods found out, in the end, was that accuracy, in his case, mattered more than distance. With Diamana, Woods found the center of the fairway and still managed to average over 300 yards during the final event of the season while ranking no worse than T27 in driving accuracy during the FedExCup Playoffs. “It’s a feeling that I know and I used to use it for a number of years,” Woods said of the shaft. “I know the graphics have changed a little bit but it’s basically the same shaft. Went back to something that I knew and had success with, and it’s turned out pretty good.” From an equipment perspective, Woods’ season will be remembered for all of the changes he made over the course of 10 months — some many never expected to see from Woods (mallet putters and graphite driving irons). New technology no doubt helped Woods make strides on the course, but in the end, it was two reliable products from his past that helped push the 42-year-old over the top and produce a storybook finish for the ages.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - After getting off to a bad start, Rory McIlroy's bid for the Masters and the career Grand Slam isn't completely dead. But he may need a miracle Sunday, plus help from frontrunner Dustin Johnson. Clawing his way back after an opening-round 75, McIlroy shot a third-round 67 that was marred only by his continued frustrations at the par-5 13th hole. He three-putted from nine feet to bogey perhaps the easiest hole on the course for the second time this week. "Yeah, 11 under for the last two days, I think that sort of speaks for itself," he said. "The good golf was in there, I just didn’t allow myself to play that way on the first 18 holes. This course can do that. This course can make you a little bit careful and a little bit tentative at times. I’ve always said I play my best golf when I’m trusting and freer, and I’ve been a lot freer over the last 36 holes." The two-time FedExCup champion hit 10 of 14 fairways, and 11 greens in regulation. He birdied the ninth and 10th holes, two of the tougher par-4s on the course, and holed out for birdie from the sand on 12. It was the unlucky 13th, though, that got him again. In the first round "Azalea" bit back when he got caught up in the trees left of the fairway and Rae's Creek, and made bogey. This time his 321-yard drive found the thick right rough. He had an opening, but after a long discussion with caddie Harry Diamond, chose to lay up. The sensible play, it nonetheless didn't pay off. Although his 62-yard third shot stopped just nine feet behind the pin, he missed the birdie and his ball slid four feet past the hole. His par effort power-lipped out. "It was where I left my (birdie) putt," he said, explaining his mistake. "The first two feet of it was uphill, and then it went over the crest and started going down, so you had to give it enough speed to at least get it up and over there, and then it just got away from me a little bit. But the greens are getting quicker. Yeah, you’ve got to think about where you’re leaving it." At the par-5 15th hole he was too aggressive, going for the green in two even though he was too far left off the tee. His second shot found the water, and he did well to get up and down for par. At least he managed to birdie both par-5s on the front. McIlroy, 31, would seem to have plenty of time to win here, and the game to do it. But as he's said, the example of Greg Norman shows there are no guarantees. He looked headed for the green jacket until a final-round 80 in 2011, and his best finish remains a 4th in 2015 Although he hasn't played well since the PGA TOUR resumed in June, McIlroy began to show positive signs in his last start at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD, when he led the field with 29 birdies. He's been showing more of the same the last two rounds, but he's likely too far back, with Johnson reaching 15 under par even before he'd played his final par 5. "I just need to go out and shoot a good one tomorrow and see where it puts me," McIlroy said, "but I have zero thoughts about winning this golf tournament right now."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Brian Harman is listed at 5 feet, 7 inches tall. He would like to offer a clarification. “On a good day,â€� he said with a laugh. “With the right set of shoes.â€� True, the defending champion at this week’s Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club will never be an NBA lottery pick. Harman is more like former Slam Dunk Contest winner Spud Webb: small but potent. At 163rd on TOUR in driving distance (288.6 yards), the lefty from Georgia gets it done in other ways. He’s 12th in driving accuracy (69.91 percent), sixth in strokes gained: putting (.858), leads the TOUR with seven top-10s this season, and likes his game fine.  It’s just that Harman has become increasingly aware of being surrounded by giants. “There are not a lot of guys that are under six feet tall,â€� he said at Quail Hollow, where he is coming off a T23 finish at the RBC Heritage. “I saw something the other day where the average height on the PGA TOUR had gone up like four inches or something like that. Guys are bigger.â€� If it seems like players are bigger, that’s because they are. PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan, in response to the USGA and R&A’s annual distance report published in March, noted that since 2003, the average age of a TOUR member has gone down, the average height up. Chesson Hadley, who is right behind Harman with six top-10 finishes this season, is 6 feet, 4 inches tall, as are Dustin Johnson and Tony Finau, who have five top-10s. Add Phil Mickelson and Marc Leishman, who also have five top-10s, and who are 6-foot-3 and 6-foot-2, respectively, and you’ve got a formidable looking starting five for intramural basketball.   Or the middle of a baseball lineup. “Guys that would have been piddling around in minor-league baseball are out here hitting it 320 yards now,â€� Harman said. Charles Howell III, who has been on TOUR for nearly 20 years, says the change has been hard to miss. “It’s not just equipment; it’s a different athlete playing the game,â€� he said. At 5 feet, 11 inches tall and 178 pounds, Howell admits he’s no Harman, but adds, “I definitely play against the animals he’s talking about.â€� Golf has always had a place for a wide range of body types. Ben Hogan was 5-foot-9. Jeff Sluman, winner of the 1988 PGA Championship, is 5-foot-7; Ian Woosnam, who won the 1991 Masters, just over 5-foot-4. Height has never told the whole story, and it still doesn’t. Wells Fargo Championship winners Rickie Fowler (2012) and Rory McIlroy (2015, 2010) are both 5-foot-10 but flexible, strong, and fast through the ball. The same could be said for FedExCup leader Justin Thomas, who is 5-foot-9. Then again, Patton Kizzire (6-foot-5) is right behind Thomas in the standings. Jordan Spieth, the 2015 FedExCup champion, is 6-foot-1, and seven-time TOUR winner Matt Kuchar is 6-foot-4. “Everyone’s getting taller,â€� said Jason Day, who is 6 feet tall. “And even if they’re not tall, they’re under six foot, they’re athletic.â€� If Kizzire, Kuchar, Johnson, Finau and Hadley are among the tallest timber on TOUR, the most physically imposing specimens are reigning U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka (6 feet, 186 pounds), Jon Rahm (6-foot-2, 220), Leishman (6-foot-2, 200) and Luke List (6-foot-2, 190). And we haven’t even mentioned Ernie Els (6-foot-3, 210), the 19-time TOUR winner who will captain the International Presidents Cup team at Royal Melbourne in 2019. What does it all mean? Size and strength can help a player withstand the TOUR grind: not just all the range balls but all the travel. Bigger bodies can age better. Mickelson (6-foot-3, 200), who leads all players with eight top-10 finishes at the Wells Fargo Championship, has stayed competitive well into his 40s. Kenny Perry (6-foot-2, 205), Steve Stricker (6 feet, 190) and Vijay Singh (6-foot-2, 208) did the same. Day believes taller players’ “longer leversâ€� are helpful for what every TOUR player needs: speed. “Having a wider body, big shoulders, long arms, is ideal,â€� he said. Kevin Duffy, Day’s trainer, nodded in agreement. “And the wider this part is,â€� Duffy said, pointing to his clavicle, “the better.â€� Guys that would have been piddling around in minor-league baseball are out here hitting it 320 yards now. Dru Love, a sponsor’s exemption at the Wells Fargo, is one of the tallest players in the field at 6-foot-5. His former Alabama teammate Thomas nicknamed him Bigfoot, which stuck—Dru wears a size 14 shoe—but Dru says there’s a point of diminishing returns when it comes to size and golf. “I think there’s a perfect height,â€� he said. “It’s not 5-7, it’s not 6-5; it’s somewhere in the middle. The two best players of all time were built pretty similarly: Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods are both six feet tall and very strong. Jason Day is six feet tall.â€� Is there really a magic number for height? Day says a big body is most effective combined with strength, suppleness, and a technically sound swing. Others aren’t ready to concede the point. Emiliano Grillo, who is listed at 5-foot-9 but says he’s “5-8 on a good day,â€� said he’s “not a big believer in hitting it longerâ€� and focuses instead on splitting fairways and making putts. Denny McCarthy, who said he’s “5-9 on a basketball rosterâ€� but is in fact 5-foot-8, said he’s okay with how far he hits the ball. He’s 117th in driving distance (293 yards), and has the competitive will you might expect from a guy who played four years of high school basketball (guard). “I have a good head on my shoulders,â€� McCarthy said, “and that’s more than half the battle.â€� Harman sounded a similar refrain. His game worked just fine in winning the Wells Fargo Championship at fill-in host Eagle Point Golf Club, which at 7,396 yards (par 72) was no pushover. And while Quail Hollow is one of the brawnier courses on TOUR at 7,554 yards (par-71), he still likes his chances. “You know, they’re not terribly dissimilar,â€� Harman said. “They both require you to drive it pretty well. Big, undulated greens. This course has kind of lent itself to the longer hitter, but creativity and good putting take you a long way here.â€� But what about all those taller players? Doesn’t he want to be big? Nah. That was a Tom Hanks movie, and besides, Harman’s caddie, Scott “Big Countryâ€� Tway, has the size part covered. As for big drives, when asked if he would trade accuracy for distance, Harman declined. “I don’t think so,â€� he said. “I like the way I do it.â€�
