Late birdie blitz keeps DeChambeau in front at European Open

HAMBURG, Germany — Bryson DeChambeau reeled off four birdies in the last seven holes to shoot a 4-under 68 and remain top of the leaderboard after the second round of the European Open on Friday. The 24-year-old American, who led overnight, finished with a 10-under total of 134. He is one stroke ahead of Richard McEvoy of England (65) and Matthias Schwab (67) of Austria. Masters champion Patrick Reed (66) shared the fourth spot on 136 with Romain Wattel of France (69) and David Drysdale of Scotland (67). “I’m absolutely satisfied,” DeChambeau said. “The wind made playing pretty tough out there and I was fortunate enough to hit it in the right spots, miss it in the right spots, get a couple of lucky breaks and take advantage of them when I needed to. “It wasn’t my best form … it was a little frustrating off the tee today. I thought I’d worked something out yesterday, and it worked a little bit, but I’ve got to go back to the range and work a little harder.” Reed benefited from an improved display on the greens. “It was a lot better compared to yesterday,” said the American golfer. “I felt like I could go into attack mode, and attack some flags, and my putter’s working. When my putter gets going I’m able to make birdies.”

Brooks Koepka sidelined for 10 weeks, hoping to play MastersBrooks Koepka sidelined for 10 weeks, hoping to play Masters

Brooks Koepka expects to miss the next 10 weeks with a partial torn tendon in his left wrist, but the reigning U.S. Open champ is hopeful he can return in time to play the year’s first major in early April. Koepka announced via news release Friday afternoon that he has suffered a tear to his Extensor Carpi Ulnaris (ECU) tendon. Currently ranked eighth in the world and 29th in the FedExCup standings, Koepka will miss several PGA TOUR events, including two World Golf Championships. But if the projected 10-week time period holds, his return date would be March 30, which is the Friday before Masters week. “I am frustrated that I will now not be able to play my intended schedule,â€ Koepka said in the release. “But I am confident in my doctors and in the treatment they have prescribed, and I look forward to teeing it up at The Masters.â€ Koepka had been troubled by wrist soreness since late 2017 but played through the pain at the Hero World Challenge and Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua while trying to pinpoint the issue. After finishing a distant last in Maui, the 27-year-old remained baffled. “It feels like someone is jabbing a knife in my hand,â€ Koepka said at the time. In the release, Koepka said doctors could not tell exactly when the injury occurred. An initial MRI failed to find the problem, so he sought a second opinion — and that’s when the partial ECU tear was discovered. The initial diagnosis was 8-12 weeks of rest and therapy, with a full recovery expected. “I began to feel some discomfort in my left hand at the Hero but it wasn’t a huge concern at the time,â€ Koepka said. “Then, perhaps unwisely, I decided to play through pain at the Sentry before the partial tear was diagnosed.â€ He’s had to shelve planned starts at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and will also miss the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship (March 1-4) and likely the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play (March 21-25) in the 10-week span. Koepka’s last WGC start was at the HSBC Champions in late October, when he tied for second. Three weeks later, he won the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament on the Japan Tour and was ranked a career-best seventh in the world. “I greatly appreciate all the emails and texts I have received over the past couple of weeks,â€ Koepka said, “and I look forward to a quick and successful recovery.â€

2017-18 PGA TOUR season schedule released2017-18 PGA TOUR season schedule released

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The PGA TOUR today released the full 2017-18 Season schedule of 49 FedExCup tournaments, representing an increase of two events with the previously announced additions of THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES at Jeju Island, Korea, and the elevation of the Web.com Tour’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship in the Dominican Republic. Total prize money for the season will be a record of more than $363 million. THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES, Korea’s first official PGA TOUR event, debuts October 16-22 at The Club at Nine Bridges as one of eight tournaments in the 2017 portion of the schedule, which was released in August. The Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, which was held for two years on the Web.com Tour, will debut on the PGA TOUR March 19-25, 2018, the same week as the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play. The Tom Fazio-designed Corales course will continue to serve as the tournament course. The Puerto Rico Open, in turn, moves from Match Play week to February 26-March 4, coinciding with the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship. With the addition of the two new international tournaments, the schedule includes nine tournaments in eight countries outside the United States. Other significant changes relate to venues. The AT&T Byron Nelson (May 14-20) moves to the new Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, Texas, while two FedExCup Playoffs events change courses: THE NORTHERN TRUST (August 20-26) returns to The Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey and the BMW Championship (September 3-9) visits historic Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia for the first time, marking only the second time in the tournament’s 115 years of play that it will be held in Pennsylvania (1959 being the other). Additionally, the U.S. Open (June 11-17) returns to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, for the first time since 2004; The Open Championship (July 16-22) rotates to Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland and the PGA Championship (August 6-12) will be held at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis for only the second time (first being in 1992). One final change sees the open week during the 2018 FedExCup Playoffs shifting by one week. The first three events will be held consecutively – THE NORTHERN TRUST, the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston (August 27-September 3) and BMW Championship. Then comes the open week, followed by the season-ending TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta (September 17-23).
