Molinari runs away with Quicken Loans National victory

POTOMAC, Md. — Francesco Molinari delivered a record performance to win the final edition of the Quicken Loans National. Molinari holed a 50-foot eagle putt to start the back nine, and he never stopped until he turned the final round into a runaway Sunday at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. The Italian closed with an 8-under 62 for an eight-shot victory, matching the largest margin this year on the PGA TOUR. Molinari followed that eagle putt with an approach to 2 feet on No. 11, one of the hardest par 4s on TOUR that had yielded only one other birdie in the final round. He made three more birdies and ended his round by missing a birdie putt from 8 feet. No matter. He finished at 21-under 259, breaking the tournament record by seven shots. “It was a lot easier than I thought,” Molinari said with a wide grin. “I played great. The start of the back nine was incredible.” Tiger Woods closed with a 66, his lowest final round in more than five years, and he was never close. Woods tied for fourth, his best result since a runner-up finish at the Valspar Championship three months ago, though he was 10 shots behind. “I was only four back at the time when I made the turn, and so I thought that maybe if I got on the back nine, I shot 30 — maybe 29 — that would be enough,” Woods said. “Evidently, I would have to shoot 24 on the back nine. What Francesco is doing back there is just awesome.” Ryan Armour closed with a 68 to finish second, earning one of four spots to The Open Championship. The other three spots went to Sung Kang, who finished third after a 64; Abraham Ancer, who tied for fourth after a 72; and Bronson Burgoon, who had a day he won’t forget. He played with Woods for the first time and experience larger crowds and louder noise than he had ever experienced. And with a birdie on the final hole for a 67, he tied for sixth to earn his first trip to The Open. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Burgoon said. Molinari’s decision to stay in America paid off in a big way. He is around the fringe of Ryder Cup qualifying, and the French Open was this week on the Ryder Cup course outside Paris. He also was No. 123 in the FedExCup, so Molinari decided to play the Quicken Loans National and the John Deere Classic in two weeks to improve his standing. The victory, his second on the PGA TOUR schedule, gives him a two-year exemption and moved him to No. 42 in the FedEx Cup. “That’s what I came here for,” Molinari said. “It was not easy to skip Paris and the French Open. I made the right decision.” Molinari previously won the HSBC Champions in 2010, a World Golf Championships event in Shanghai. But that was before the PGA TOUR recognized it as an official victory unless a PGA TOUR member had won the tournament. That victory was a lot like this one — a master performance by a player who relies on his tee-to-green game and thrives when the putter is hot. And the putter was as scorching as weather that approached 100 degrees. Molinari beat Lee Westwood by one shot, and no one else was closer than 10 shots in Shanghai. This time, he had the course to himself with a back nine that was close to perfection, much like his week. Molinari missed only 10 greens in regulation over 72 holes. Not many people saw it. Thousands were following Woods all week, even in the oppressive heat over the weekend. Woods came to life with a pair of birdies late on the front nine, and he was in range to get even closer when he hit a lob wedge to 6 feet on No. 10. He missed the putt. He missed the 13th fairway and took bogey for the second straight day. And then he missed a 3-foot birdie putt on No. 14. “Those are things that I can’t afford to do and expect to win a golf tournament,” Woods said.

Brendan Steele leads by one at ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIPBrendan Steele leads by one at ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP

INZAI CITY, Japan — Brendan Steele finished with four consecutive birdies and shot a 6-under 64 on Thursday to take the first-round lead at the PGA TOUR’s ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP. “Everybody says if you birdie 18, dinner tastes better,” Steele said. “But four in a row is definitely, really nice and feels good.” It was a happy return to the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club, where Steele was the runner-up a year ago in the same tournament behind winner Hideki Matsuyama. “I love it here,” Steele said. “Loved the course last year — really happy to be back.” The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP is the only PGA TOUR event in Japan and has a purse of $11 million. There are no COVID-19 crowd-limit restrictions in place this year. “Nice for us to be able to get out of the hotel a little bit this year and enjoy the culture a little bit,” Steele said. “So I’ve enjoyed it a ton.” It was a big day for other Americans as well. Adam Schenk was a shot back after a 65 on a rainy day on the course on the outskirts of Tokyo. Sam Ryder, Matthew NeSmith, and Keegan Bradley were two back. Three more Americans were three behind: Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, and Maverick McNealy. Defending champion Matsuyama, who won by five strokes a year ago, got off to a slow start before a home crowd with a 71.

Tiger, others recall President Bush’s impact on golfTiger, others recall President Bush’s impact on golf

NASSAU, Bahamas – George H.W. Bush not only loved golf, but he liked to play fast. Tiger Woods got a taste of that one time as an amateur when he had the opportunity to play with the former President during a practice round in Houston. “It was one of those very quick ones, Woods recalled Saturday, a day after the 41st President died at the age of 94. “18 holes in probably under 2-1/2 hours. Asked how fast Bush played, Woods replied: “It was basically club, ball, one look, gone. Woods was among the many players who had the late President on their minds during the third round of the Hero World Challenge. Several players scrawled the number “41 on their caps in memory of the President, who is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and was the honorary chairman of the Presidents Cup in 1996. “I met him on numerous occasions, Woods said. “He was fantastic to be around. He was just one of the smartest people I’ve ever been around, and so down to earth. Justin Thomas was 11 years old when he met the former President at the 2004 Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills in Michigan. Thomas was a spectator, rooting for the American team that included his fellow Kentuckian, Kenny Perry. “It was on the first tee, Thomas recalled. “He was standing there – I can just picture it, although I don’t know Oakland Hills well enough to know exactly where it was. He was inside the ropes but there was a little gated area. “I was with maybe Kenny Perry, someone that I knew knew him, and he took us up and introduced him and just said ‘Hi.’ I remember him being very nice but again, I was just 11 years old, so I didn’t really understand the impact or how cool it was. But yeah, looking back, it was a pretty cool moment. Keegan Bradley also met President Bush a couple of times, at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah and the 2013 Presidents Cup at Muirfield Village. The meetings were brief, but Bradley is well aware of the impact the 41st President had on golf. “Probably more than any other president because of what he did in the golf world, the Presidents Cup, Bradley said. “I read that his dad and grandfather were both presidents of the USGA. Pretty incredible. They did a lot for the game. Current Houston resident Patrick Reed also has met both of the Bush presidents, including the 41st President at a golf tournament. “Shocking, right? Reed said. “I was playing and all of a sudden I kind of turned around right when I finished and he was there. I walked over and said hello, took my hat off, kind of talked to him for a little bit, talked a little about Houston and how he’s doing. Asked if he would describe Bush as an avid fan, Reed replied: “Oh, he’s more than just an avid fan, he’s beyond that. He absolutely loved the game. You know, to have the support from presidents and have them come as much as they do and how often they’re out there, it means a lot. To lose a guy and to lose a person like President Bush, it’s said because of how much he’s touched all of us. Bryson DeChambeau never met the 41st President, but he does run into No. 43, George W. Bush, from time to time in Dallas, either at Brookhollow or Dallas National. “He always says, ‘DeChambeau, what’s up?’ “ DeChambeau said with a smile. “He’s a great guy and I wish I could’ve known his father a little bit. Whether they met him or not, the TOUR pros appreciated what the Bush family did for the game. “The Bush family has been incredibly supportive of competitive golf, from the Walker Cup to any major event, DeChambeau said. “They’re always supporting it, always watching. That means a lot for the game of golf, and we need to pay our tributes to the Bush family and what they’ve done for the game. Said Woods, who will be the U.S. Captain at next year’s Presidents Cup: “Getting a chance to be around him at Presidents Cup and him being involved in since its inception in ’94 … he was such a class act. Anyone who’s ever been around him knows how much he loved his golf and how much he supported it … “We’re going to miss him.
