Tiger Woods climbs into contention at Quicken Loans National

BETHESDA, Md. – Tiger Woods has cranked up his putter and pushed his way into contention after a 5-under 65 in the second round at the Quicken Loans National. After making just 48 feet, 7 inches of putts in Thursday’s opening 70, Woods rammed home 122 feet, 5 inches of them on Friday to move to 5 under for the tournament and just four shots off the clubhouse lead through the morning wave. While his putter was decidedly better, it was a chip-in on the 18th hole, his ninth of the round, that really kick-started the 79-time PGA TOUR winner’s charge. Coming off a three-putt bogey on the 17th, Woods missed the 18th green short and to the right but then clipped his wedge shot perfectly for birdie. It meant he turned in 2 under and made three more birdies in the next five holes to ride the momentum and have him in striking distance. “I was hitting that shot in the practice round and it’s exactly the same shot and it was pretty sweet because I was just trying to hit kind of a high cut spinner in there and it worked out perfectly,â€ Woods said of his chip. Woods had defiantly stated he putted well on Thursday despite ranking 92nd of 120 players in Strokes Gained: Putting. He reiterated that on Friday when he finished his round ranked fifth in the same stat of those playing the morning wave. After years of using a blade-style putter, the 42-year-old switched to a mallet style this week. “I tried to clean up my ball‑striking a little bit and continue doing what I was doing on the greens yesterday,â€ Woods said of his round. “I hit a lot of good putts (yesterday), they just didn’t go in. I started on my line with the right pace and today I did that and a lot of them fell. “I haven’t done that in probably about four tournaments, they’re going to start falling and today they fell.â€ Perhaps the important part of the round was the final two holes where he got up and down for par from bunkers. It enabled Woods to put TOUR win No. 80 firmly in his sights. But with temperatures expected to soar over the weekend it is going to be tough for all competitors. Woods was tied for second through 36 holes at the Valspar Championship earlier this season and would go on to be runner-up. He started the weekend just two shots back. In all his other starts, he’s had to climb from well back to get into contention. “I didn’t want to lose it on the last couple holes … I could have easily lost it but I made two nice saves,â€ Woods added. “I’m not that far away from putting it together where I can win. Right now, I’m only four back. I’m in a similar position to where I was at Valspar. The scores aren’t going to be that low and it’s going to be a tough weekend. “It’s going to be hot, it’s going to be long grinds. It will be hotter than now, which is scary. It will be over 100 degrees and it will be a long weekend mentally and physically. I’m in a good position.â€

Davis Riley shoots 62 to take two-shot lead at Valspar ChampionshipDavis Riley shoots 62 to take two-shot lead at Valspar Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Davis Riley made three birdies from tough spots to close out the front nine and then kept right on rolling Saturday until he had a 9-under 62, a tournament scoring record and a two-shot lead in the Valspar Championship. RELATED: Leaderboard | Wesley Bryan needs ‘special’ Sunday at Valspar Championship And just like that, a Masters invitation is in view for Riley, a 25-year-old PGA TOUR rookie. He played before the largest gallery at steamy Innisbrook, most of them there to watch the other Alabama alum in the pairing. Justin Thomas did his part with a third consecutive 66, which any other year would have set a tournament record. Riley stole the show with a creative chip-and-run from out of the rough and under a tree, and with a 70-foot bunker shot that clanged into the cup on the fly at No. 9. Those were two of his nine birdies on the Copperhead course — he had only 20 putts for the round — that helped him turn a five-shot deficit into a two-shot lead. “It’s always fun when you get to play with a good buddy and Justin obviously is one of the best players in the world,” Riley said. “There was definitely a level of comfort there for that.” Riley was at 18-under 195, breaking by four the tournament record last set a year ago by Sam Burns, who remains very much in the mix to win back-to-back. Matthew NeSmith, who set the 36-hole record and led by four shots when he made the turn, made his first bogey of the week at No. 10 and dropped three more shots. He sprinkled in enough birdies and a solid par save on the 18th for a 69. Riley and NeSmith will be in the final group Sunday. Thomas and Burns (67) were three shots behind and have the experience of winning. Adam Hadwin, who won at Innisbrook five years ago for his only PGA TOUR title, shot 70 and was five shots behind. NeSmith had reason to wonder what happened. He did everything right, with birdies on the par 5s, at 15-foot birdie putt on No. 7 and an 8-foot birdie on the ninth to reach 18 under. But he began showing a few cracks in his iron game, going into a bunker on the 10th, long on a pair of the par 3s and hitting a poor chip that led to bogey on the 16th. Even so, he was right there with a chance to win for the first time and earn a trip to the Masters, where his dad used to work as a part-time caddie. “This is what I’ve dreamed of as a little kid, coming out here and playing in the final group,” NeSmith said. “On the PGA TOUR the final group is the coolest thing in the world, and to have that opportunity and to play well was great. And I just tried to enjoy the walk. It’s hard. It’s obviously very hard. But I did a good job. “The goal was to finish 18 holes and enjoy the walk and we did both of those things today, so I’m pretty happy.” Thomas has gone more than a year since his last victory, at THE PLAYERS Championship, and stayed in the hunt amid the Riley show. He made a tough par save to close out the front nine and matched Riley with a 31 on the back nine to remain three behind. Even Thomas got caught up in Riley’s performance. “It was really impressive,” Thomas said. “It’s a big moment for a rookie — anybody — and he handled it like a rock star and made 9 under look very, very easy barring a crazy chip-in there on 9.” The Copperhead course played slightly tougher with the strongest breeze of the week on the tree-lined property. Even three days of sunshine couldn’t make the greens too firm, and players still took aim and scored low. The average score was 69.7. Xander Schauffele had a 68 and was in the large group at 11-under 202.

Harry Higgs’ walk-off albatross sets up title push at Safeway OpenHarry Higgs’ walk-off albatross sets up title push at Safeway Open

NAPA, Calif. - Harry Higgs body slammed his 4-iron into the Silverado Resort and Spa North Course fairway and jumped in the air in what one could kindly call a chaotic celebration. The 28-year-old character then raised his arms outstretched, signaling to a non-existent crowd to show him love, before accepting elbow bumps from those in his group. Welcome to an albatross, Higgs style. Higgs had just made an incredible two from 230 yards on the par-5 ninth hole, his final hole of the second round at the Safeway Open, to card a 10-under 62 and move to just two shots off the clubhouse lead held by Sam Burns. With the Safeway Open another being played without on-site spectators thanks to COVID-19 protocols it was a strange moment for Higgs, who is without doubt one of the bigger personalities and characters on the PGA TOUR. "I don’t think anybody really would have seen it anyway. No one really goes and watches that hole, they’re all behind one drinking wine and champagne like my family was last year," Higgs said. "If that was on 18, that would have been obviously sick and then Lord knows what the reaction’s like when there’s people around ... I tend to do some crazy stuff if people start chanting my name." In fact, rather than take it up a few more notches Higgs revealed he suddenly had a serious concern on his mind as he continued walking towards the green to retrieve his ball. How would he get his nap in now. Higgs, who finished 55th in the FedExCup as a rookie last season, was bouncing off the walls after the sensational finish to a bogey-free round. Just moments before the shot he'd been telling his brother, who acts as his caddie, that he couldn't wait to finish and get to bed. "I hope that I can calm down in an hour so I can take a nap. I was looking forward to a nap all day long and I might be too jacked up now to actually fall asleep," Higgs laughed. "What a wonderful way to end the day. I couldn’t see it disappear ...but I finally hit one like on the button solid. Drew a little bit, obviously landed soft, rolled right in the hole. The volunteer off the left just started screaming and then he said, “It’s in the hole, it’s in the hole!” and then I had a little panic freak out, jump for joy and then I threw my club. I’m sure it looked funny and ridiculous. I’m sure it could probably be a “not top‑10 play” just based on the poor reaction that I gave it." That volunteer was George Kennedy who couldn't believe what he had just witnessed. Of the three stationed around the ninth green only Kennedy saw it. Another was getting lunch at the time and the last had his head down entering data into the ShotLink tablet. "I'm still on a high from it. The ball went pop, bop and clunk. It was a once in a lifetime type deal that you see," Kennedy said. "It’s really weird out here without the fans because they add so much energy and we have to be the energy of a couple thousand people." Another volunteer, Rufus Arther, was the beneficiary of the ball itself. Arther had acted as walking scorer for the round and was stunned when Higgs signed it and handed it over to him. "It was incredible. This is going to go in my trophy case and it’s going to be a special memory from not just this tournament but all my volunteering experience because you just don’t see something like this every day," Arther, who is in his seventh year as a walking scorer at the Safeway Open, said. "I’m definitely a Harry Higgs fan now. He’s such a likable guy and it couldn’t happen to a better person. I’m hoping he continues to do well as it was such a pleasure sharing this experience with him." Higgs could have kept the ball as a keepsake but was, as always, up front and honest as to why he didn't. "I would lose it, and I don’t have a cabinet. I thought about just tossing it in the bag but Rufus was with us today, I just signed it, “Thanks for going with us, 2 on No. 9” a couple exclamation points, signed it and handed it to him," Higgs added. "I figure that was better than me keeping it and losing it." Prior to the albatross Higgs had seven birdies, six of those came on the back side of the course, his front nine on Friday. Through two rounds he is 8 under on the back side and 5 under on the front. Three of those gained shots on the front side came from the one incredible shot. With a career best finish of runner-up at last season's Bermuda Championship, where he held the 54-hole lead only to be run down by Brendon Todd, Higgs is excited for the chance to go one better. "I’ve not played that front nine very well. I’ve got the back nine down, played the front nine fine, just haven’t made enough birdies, so I figured I’d make up for it holing my second on the last," he grinned. ‘"It gives me a nice little boost going into the weekend. I’ve got to keep doing it. It’s not like 13 under is going to win. Maybe sprinkle in another albatross on nine or whatever other hole. Those help, for sure."

PGA TOUR announces expanded schedule of 49 events for 2019-20 SeasonPGA TOUR announces expanded schedule of 49 events for 2019-20 Season

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The PGA TOUR today announced an expanded 2019-20 Season schedule of 49 FedExCup tournaments, featuring a dramatically changed opening segment and several late-season adjustments to accommodate the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. The schedule reflects a net increase of three tournaments over the current season. 11 of the 46 Regular Season events will be conducted in the opening portion of the schedule between September-November. This segment includes two new tournaments in The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan and the Bermuda Championship, plus the return of A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier and the Houston Open following one-year absences due to their transition from 2018 mid-season dates. Later in the season, the TOUR will have an open week during the men’s Olympic competition (week of July 27-August 2) before resuming with the Wyndham Championship and three FedExCup Playoffs events. Several changes also have been made leading up to the Olympics, most notably: the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit moving one month earlier to late May; and the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and Barracuda Championship shifting from late July to the first week of the month, exchanging dates with the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota. “After a very successful first year with our new schedule, we are thrilled to expand the number of events to 49 while maintaining a great flow from start-to-finish, allowing our fans to better engage and follow the TOUR throughout the season, said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “For the second year, we’re excited about kicking off the Season of Championships with THE PLAYERS in March, bookended by the FedExCup Playoffs in August, and the return of the Olympics in that window. As for the early-season portion of the schedule, our players grasp the importance of a strong start in the Race for the FedExCup and this has translated into growth and momentum for the events played in the fall. With the PGA TOUR season now ending in August at the TOUR Championship, the 2019-20 season will open the week of September 9-15 with A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier. The Sanderson Farms Championship follows with its first-ever standalone date (September 16-22), before the TOUR moves on to the Safeway Open, Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and Houston Open. The TOUR then embarks on a three-tournament Asian swing, beginning October 14-20 with THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES at Jeju Island, Korea. The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP debuts at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba Prefecture October 21-27, followed by the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China, the week of October 28-November 3, which also marks the debut of the Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Club in Southampton. Following a week off, the TOUR continues the 2019 segment at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico (November 11-17) before concluding with The RSM Classic. While that marks the end of FedExCup competition until the first week of January 2020, the 13th Presidents Cup returns to The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia the week of December 9-15. It was there that the International Team claimed its lone victory over the U.S. Team in 1998. Once the TOUR resumes in January in Hawaii, the scheduling sequence remains unchanged from the current season until the Rocket Mortgage Classic’s move from the last week of June to May 25-31. The next four weeks remain the same before the move of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and Barracuda Championship to June-29-July 5 and the 3M Open to July 20-26, the week before the Olympic competition. Following the Olympic Games, the Regular Season wraps up at the Wyndham Championship (August 3-9), where not only the FedExCup Playoffs field will be finalized, but the added drama of the season-long Wyndham Rewards Top 10 will be determined. Introduced this season, the $10 million competition caps the Regular Season by rewarding the 10 leaders in FedExCup points, with $2 million going to the winner.  Due to the off week for the Olympics, the FedExCup Playoffs will begin one week later and conclude the final week of August: THE NORTHERN TRUST August 10-16; BMW Championship August 17-23; and the TOUR Championship August 24-30. The FedExCup Playoffs wrap up the Season of Championships, which begins with THE PLAYERS Championship (March 9-15) and continues through the Masters Tournament (April 6-12); PGA Championship (May 11-17); U.S. Open (June 15-21); and The Open Championship (July 13-19). Several new or familiar venues are included during this stretch, beginning with the PGA Championship visiting TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, the U.S. Open returning to Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, and The Open Championship going to Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England. Additionally, THE NORTHERN TRUST will be held for the first time in the Boston market at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts, while the BMW Championship will visit Olympia Fields Country Club in suburban Chicago.
