SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – Mike Davis knows what people say. Davis, the CEO of the United States Golf Association, has heard the talk that the USGA obsesses about par and how to keep its U.S. Open champions at least within shouting distance of it. That’s fine, he says. But it’s not true. “Since I’ve been at the USGA, and it’s been almost 30 years, I’ve never heard anybody at the USGA say we’re shooting for even par,â€� Davis said in a press conference before the 118th U.S. Open on Wednesday. “Never heard it. … “But we talk about, incessantly, how do we get the course to be really a great test of golf?â€� Davis continued. “As we say, get all 14 clubs dirty to make sure that these players are tested to the nth degree.â€� What they’ve come up with is the latest and, in the opinion of many, greatest version of Shinnecock Hills, a course that opened as a 12-holer in 1891 and since then has been altered in ways big (William Flynn, 1931) and small (the newly restored Stanford White clubhouse). The most significant recent change: A three-year restoration by the design team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw that began in 2012 and yielded a course that is vastly different than the one that hosted U.S. Opens in 2004, 1995, 1986 and all the way back to the first one in 1896. “Honestly, I think they’ve got it right,â€� said Rory McIlroy. There is a perception that the USGA is due and maybe overdue for a rousingly successful U.S. Open host course. At the largely experimental 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, players ripped the bumpy greens. Last year brought controversy over the generously wide fairways at Erin Hills, a pastoral gem in Wisconsin where the anticipated wind didn’t blow. In the crudest terms, Coore-Crenshaw took out a lot of natural vegetation: trees, bushes, and fescue. They had brought Shinnecock’s fairways to as much as 60 yards wide, but in the aftermath of Erin Hills, last September, the USGA and the Shinnecock grounds crew replaced the fairways’ edges with transplanted fescue so that the average width is now closer to 40. That’s still a lot more generous off the tee than the 26.6-yard average that confronted players in ’04. In Shinnecock, the USGA is going back to its roots, a course that is by turns clever and beautiful, and with a clubhouse that could’ve been painted by Andrew Wyeth. The 7,440-yard, par-70 beauty is built on roughly 250 acres of rolling, sand-based terrain. It’s bouncy and fast, and, in part thanks to Coore-Crenshaw, mostly treeless and devoid of extraneous brush. Photographs of previous U.S. Opens here show a different looking, different playing course. In 1995, when the mustachioed Corey Pavin won, holes were separated from one another by trees and brush. Not anymore. Coore-Crenshaw also expanded both the greens and the green roll-offs. Phil Mickelson, who is second on the PGA TOUR in Strokes Gained: Putting, has backed the changes. Ditto for 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, who once disliked Shinnecock. “I did play in 2004,â€� he said, “didn’t have the fondest of memories of the place, but that actually changed.â€� The Englishman said he returned to Shinnecock in 2012 or ’13, played with a few members, and saw a landscape transformed. “I saw the course more width-wise as we’re seeing this week,â€� Rose said, “and it completely changed my impression of the whole golf course. “It went from being not a very fun experience to actually, wow, now I see why it’s one of the top-rated golf courses in the world,â€� he added. “I thoroughly enjoyed it. I came here with a changed approach, I suppose, and an attitude towards the place, and I’ve really enjoyed my practice.â€� Players will debate what to hit off the tees, mixing in plenty of long-irons, fairway woods and hybrids and potentially limiting driver use, depending on the wind. (Thursday could bring gusts of 25-30 mph.) Then, Rose said, he’ll aim for the middle of the greens. “Easier said than done,â€� he added. The humps and hollows, steep grades and tight run-off areas, will funnel balls away from pins and, in some cases, up to 50-plus yards away. That’s why one of the most common sentiments so far this week is that this is a second-shot golf course. “They have to think about what happens when the ball lands,â€� Davis said, “where’s it going to bounce and roll to. It rewards players that can work the ball both left and right and right and left, knock down shots, hit high shots. So, it really, indeed, is what we’re looking for as a test.â€� At most golf courses, a shot is over when the ball lands on the green; at Shinnecock Hills, that’s when the fun is just beginning.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – Notes and observations from the third round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic at El Camaleon Golf Club.  LEADING LIGHTS KUCHAR BUILDS LEAD Matt Kuchar shot a 6-under 65 to reach 20-under and build up a four-shot lead over Whee Kim (66) at the steamy Mayakoba Golf Classic on Saturday. Richy Werenski (67) and Danny Lee (67) are at 15-under, five back, with everyone else at least six shots behind. This marks the best-ever 54-hole score for Kuchar, 40, a seven-time PGA TOUR winner who finished 76th in the FedExCup last season after being in the top 20 for eight straight seasons. “I can’t imagine doing better through 54 holes,� said Kuchar, who had shot 64-64 the first two rounds. “I did think about it today that it would be nice to get to 7-under to match my first two rounds. … I’ve felt really, really good for three days.� Kuchar hit nine of 14 fairways at El Camaleon Golf Club, where accuracy off the tee is crucial. He’s 34 of 42 in that stat for the week, tied for third in the field. He also continued to hit greens (15 of 18), tame the greens (28 putts), and scramble well (eight of 10 for the week). His only hiccup was a bogey at the par-4 14th, of the two hardest holes Saturday. “This week it’s come together,� he said. “It’s been very satisfying.� Kuchar has used a local caddie this week as his regular caddie, John Wood, takes the week off to attend a reunion. David Giral Ortiz, who caddied for Mexico’s Armando Favela as he won a Mayakoba qualifier two weeks ago, has been the leader’s lucky charm, Kuchar said. Since finishing T3 at Mayakoba in ’08, he had played here just once, doing little besides make the cut. His most recent victory came at the 2014 RBC Heritage. NOTABLES CHAMP’S TOUGH ENDING. Cameron Champ, who won the Sanderson Farms Championship two weeks ago, was still in contention with an outside chance but double-bogeyed the 18th hole for a 69. He went from four off the lead to six back and in a tie for fifth. FOWLER DISAPPOINTED. Rickie Fowler three-putted from what he estimated to be four feet at the 12th and shot 69 to reach 10-under, but at 10 back he’s too far behind. “A little sloppy,� he said. “I missed a few short ones today that cost me probably at least three shots.� FINAU 8 BEHIND. Tony Finau, 9th in the FedExCup, shot 67, one of the better rounds of the day, but is still only 12-under and eight shots off the lead. He’s tied for 15th place. KIZZIRE STRUGGLES. Patton Kizzire was making a good show of it in his first title defense but struggled with a third-round 72 to fall to 10-under, 10 shots off the lead. OBSERVATIONS FURYK FOCUS RETURNS. Jim Furyk has gone from focusing on 12 players’ games to focusing on one player’s game after his turn captaining the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Now he’s trying to ascertain just exactly where he is with that one game, and seeing positive signs after a third-round 66 got him to 13-under total and into a tie for eighth. “It’s kind of fun to get back to playing again,� said Furyk, 48, who made par on 18 after his ball grazed the lip twice, once on his approach and once on his birdie putt of roughly five feet. When he closed with a 63 for a T4 at the Wyndham Championship last summer, it was his first top-five finish since the 2016 U.S. Open (T2). A 17-time PGA TOUR winner who won the 2010 FedExCup, he slipped to 141st and failed to make the Playoffs last season. “It was a lot of weeks where I didn’t really think about golf for me that much,� he said. Now he’s hoping starts at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open (MC), Mayakoba and RSM Classic will help him assess his game. “I’ve got a lot of things I need to improve on,� Furyk said. “Had a lot of time off, had a lot of injuries the last few years.�  OFF DAY FOR MEXICO. It’s been a banner year for Mexico on TOUR, with four Mexican players earning full status for this season, and seven total teeing it at Mayakoba. Of the four made the cut at Mayakoba—Abraham Ancer, Jose de Jesus Rodriguez, Armando Favela and Oscar Fraustro—Ancer leads the way after a 67 got him to 13-under. Alas, Ancer’s 4-under score was better than his three countrymen combined, with Rodriguez (72) admittedly struggling in the heat and Favela (70) and Fraustro (71) mostly standing in place on moving day. PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Tiger Woods is still looking for a solution off the tee after the 79-time PGA TOUR winner opened the Genesis Open with a grinding 1-over 72. Having hit just 19 fairways over four rounds at Torrey Pines a few weeks ago, Woods was hoping for better accuracy in his first start at Riviera Country Club since 2006. And while the stat line of eight of 14 fairways reads reasonably – only four of those hit were with his driver. Unlike at Torrey – where he recovered to hit plenty of greens – Woods managed just seven of 18 on Thursday. It meant way too many holes grinding for pars than trying to make birdies. Making just his third tournament start since undergoing spinal fusion surgery last April, Woods chose to look at the glass half full. “It was a lot better today. The shaft is a little more stout, and the times I lost it to the right, a lot of the times I was just trying to smooth it out there,â€� Woods explained. “I can go ahead and hit this thing, I can be aggressive, and I can take out one side of the golf course, which is great.â€� The side he didn’t take out was the right. After opening with a birdie on the 10th hole at Riviera, Woods sent his first attempt with the driver right into the trees. A towering eucalyptus promptly swallowed his ball and had him hitting 3 from the tee. He had a handful of other wild misses to the right including on the par-4 ninth – his final hole – where he ended up in a bunker – on the 10th. “I guess he’s gone to a driver that’s a little longer, a little more loft, so that’s good. I said to him, ‘Make it as easy as possible for yourself, don’t try and complicate things,’â€� playing partner Rory McIlroy said of Woods’ driver. “But it looks OK. He hit some great drives coming in, he drove it much better … saw some good signs, just a better rhythm, a little bit better tempo from the top.â€� McIlroy pointed out the 7:22am tee time and crisp morning temperatures may have contributed. “It was cold and if you don’t quite release it that much, it can get away from you pretty easily. I had a couple get away from me and didn’t feel like I hit that bad,â€� he said. And the Northern Irishman is a firm believer that over time and more reps Woods will be a serious factor. “It doesn’t feel like five years ago that he won five tournaments and was the Player of the Year,â€� McIlroy said. “He remembers how to do this and his body’s allowing him to do this, and there’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll make a little bit of noise this year.â€� Sitting five back of the early clubhouse lead, Woods certainly didn’t feel out of the event he’s failed to win in 10 previous tries including his PGA TOUR debut as a 16-year-old in 1992. He did after all post five birdies, and a couple of his mistakes were basic errors – like hitting into long Kikuyu grass with an iron off the tee on the par-4 fifth hole and missing the par-4 seventh green with a wedge from just 137 yards. Needing just 25 putts was promising so if he eliminates the mistakes he could certainly press toward the weekend. “I’m not that far off to really putting some good numbers out there,â€� Woods said. “I’ve got to clean up my card … I made too many bogeys. If I can just clean that up, I can start making my way up the board.â€�
