Tiger Tracker: Follow Tiger Woods’ Wells Fargo Championship final round

After a three week break following his return to the Masters, Tiger Woods is back on the course this weekend at the Wells Fargo Championship. The 14-time major champion shot even par on Thursday and 2-over on Friday to barely make the cut for the weekend. He followed that up with a 3-under round on Saturday, and even though it was an improvement from the first two days, he wasn’t thrilled. Woods tees off at 11:05 a.m. ET alongside Brandon Harkins. Follow his round with our hole-by-hole tracker throughout the day: Hole 1 – Par 4 Whoops. Rocking his Sunday red, Tiger misses way left off the first tee.

Hideki Matsuyama switches to unreleased Srixon driverHideki Matsuyama switches to unreleased Srixon driver

Hideki Matsuyama is crucial to the International Team’s chances in the Presidents Cup. The eight-time TOUR winner is making his fourth Presidents Cup appearance and is the highest-ranked member of the International Team. He may have a new club in the bag, as well, at Quail Hollow after using a yet-to-be-released Srixon driver in the season-opening Fortinet Championship. Matsuyama is known as one of the TOUR’s top tinkerers, showing up every week with a bag filled to the brim with backup clubs and extra shaft. It’s not uncommon for Matsuyama to test four or five different driver builds during a range session, with four or five additional shafts on deck that he swap out for further testing. He’s constantly looking for the right feel and precise performance from his equipment. Since early last year, Matsuyama has consistently used and tested slightly-modified versions of Srixon’s ZX5 driver model that was released to the public in January 2021.The 2021 ZX5 retail model comes with a larger profile made for forgiveness, whereas the ZX7 has a more compact look and is designed for a more penetrating trajectory. On the day before the opening round of the Fortinet Championship, Matsuyama was spotted testing a completely new prototype driver from Srixon. A day earlier, GolfWRX.com caught wind of players testing new Srixon “ZX5 MKII LS” and “ZX7 MKII” prototype drivers at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California. The drivers were recently added to the USGA Conforming Clubs List, so they’re approved for competition, but they are unreleased models that have yet to be seen by the public. Matsuyama, who’s usually seen testing various Srixon 2021 ZX5 drivers during his practice sessions, was spotted testing Srixon’s new ZX5 MKII LS drivers on Wednesday and in photos from Thursday’s first round. Although Srixon representatives chose not to speak on the new driver technologies when contacted for comment, a bit of detective work can add a bit of clarity. The ZX5 MKII “LS” (which presumably stands for “low spin”) has a weight in the front portion of the sole near the face. Typically, moving the center of gravity (CG) toward the face can help create a lower-spinning, lower-launching ball flight. Additionally, the words “Rebound Frame” appear on the toe section of the face. In Srixon’s previous driver release, the Rebound Frame enhanced speed by using strategically placed regions with various levels of rigidity and flexibility to maximize energy transfer into the golf ball; it appears the Rebound Frame is being used in the new models, as well. Matsuyama employed a 10.5-degree ZX5 MKII LS driver head, equipped with the familiar Graphite Design Tour AD-DI 8TX orange shaft that he’s used for years. He’s also added a strip of lead tape to the back/heel portion of the driver head for a slight modification to the center of gravity.

Tiger Woods’ hot start thwarted by rain stoppage at PGA ChampionshipTiger Woods’ hot start thwarted by rain stoppage at PGA Championship

ST. LOUIS – Tiger Woods birdied three of his first five holes and was at 3 under through his first seven holes and making up ground on leader Gary Woodland (66, 10 under). Alas, the horn blew for a weather delay at 3:35 p.m., with Woods having hit his drive 321 yards into the primary rough at the par-5 eighth hole. “I’m 3-under par, so I felt I was headed in the right direction,â€ Woods said. “Tomorrow is going to be a long day for a lot of us and try and get back at it early tomorrow morning.â€ Although the morning wave had completed the second round, the afternoon wave was not so lucky, as players were called off the course with as many as 14 holes remaining when a thunderstorm blew through St. Louis and dumped too much rain on Bellerive Country Club to continue. They will resume play at 7 a.m. local time Saturday, and the third round will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of round two, with threesomes going off the first and 10th tees. “The good thing is we’re going to have the greens prepared before we go back out there to finish up our second round,â€ Woods said. “It would have been quite a bit different if we had to go back out this afternoon and finish it up. But the greens will be freshly cut, so it will be just like it was when we played on Thursday.â€ FedExCup No. 2 Justin Thomas, playing in the same group as Woods, was 1 under for the round and 2 under overall through seven. Rory McIlroy, the third member of the group, was even for the day and even for the tournament, just inside the projected cut line. “I guess the story of the last couple of days, I just haven’t taken advantage of the opportunities,â€ said McIlroy. “I kind of felt like I had a couple really good looks on the front nine today and didn’t take them. But I’m in the middle of the eighth fairway and I’ve got a chance to hopefully make birdie there in the morning and hopefully that will kick start me and I can get off and running from there. “But, yeah, it’s been, I think it’s been 16 pars in a row from yesterday to today,â€ he added, “so hopefully I can break that run in the morning.â€ Not that a birdie at the par-5 eighth is a guarantee. Phil Mickelson, playing in the other marquee group of the afternoon, had just made a bogey there and was at 3 over, three shots on the wrong side of the cut line, when the horn blew to evacuate the course Keegan Bradley, another member of his group, had reeled off three straight birdies to get to 3 under when the horn blew, while Jason Day, the third member of the threesome, was at 1 under for the round and 4 under overall through eight holes. “Today I just wanted to try and be patient,â€ Day said. “I’m 1-under, currently on the ninth green, so if I can come back tomorrow with softer conditions, I think that I’ll be able to try to get some more birdies out there.â€ First-round leader Rickie Fowler was 2 under through 10 and 7 under overall, just three back. “Obviously, it would be nice to keep going after birdieing 8 and 10,â€ he said. “I feel like we’re in a good spot. But the nice thing about the delay and going back out tomorrow morning, we’ll get fresh greens, so that will be nice for the final eight holes of the second round. “We’ll see how the waves play out and how the scoring is,â€ Fowler added. “Obviously, great scoring in the late early wave, and we’ll see if we can go take advantage of good conditions in the morning.â€ Playing alongside Xander Schauffele (2 under through 11, 2 under overall) and U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Jim Furyk (3 over for the day, 2 over for the tournament), Tony Finau had the wildest round of the day going after making eight birdies and a triple-bogey for his first 11 holes. Finau was at 4 under for the day and even par overall, just inside the cut line.

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – South Korea’s Amy Yang and Chella Choi took early command of the rain-suspended KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Thursday at Olympia Fields Country Club. At 5 under, they share the lead, but Yang will be looking to separate herself early Friday morning. While Choi finished with a 5-under-par 66, Yang was in the 18th fairway when rain halted play at 8:01 p.m. ET. Yang is among 30 players who will have to return at 7:45 a.m. ET Friday to finish their rounds. The second round will actually begin before the first round is finished, with second-round play beginning at 7:30 a.m ET. Yang and Choi hold a one-shot lead on Brittany Altomare and Joanna Klatten, who has two holes to finish.
