Brooks Koepka ready to play after wrist injury

U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka was out of golf so long he forgot where he put his clubs when finally healthy enough to start hitting balls. Now he’s back to work, and he’s ready to play. Koepka plans to play the Zurich Classic next week in New Orleans, ending a 15-week hiatus from a left wrist injury so severe he was in a soft cast for two months and didn’t touch a club for 91 days. “It feels like I’ve been out for six months,” Koepka said. “I still have confidence. I feel like I can win next week.” Koepka won the Dunlop Phoenix on the Japan Golf Tour last November, and the next week he was hitting balls to get ready for the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas when he felt pain in his left wrist. It hurt all week in the Bahamas, where he finished last against an 18-man field. Koepka didn’t touch a club until going to Kapalua for the Sentry Tournament of Champions. He finished last against a 34-man field. And then he stepped away. “It was torn a lot worse than they originally thought,” said Koepka, who doesn’t know what caused the partial tear to a tendon. “The ligaments that hold the tendon in place were gone. Every time I went to the doctor, it seemed like it got worse and worse.” His treatment included withdrawing bone marrow from his hip and injecting it into his left wrist, and then another session a month later of platelet-rich plasma injections. The injury not only caused Koepka to miss the Masters Tournament, it stopped the momentum that began with his four-shot victory in the U.S. Open at Erin Hills last summer. In his next nine starts, Koepka had one victory (by nine shots in Japan), a runner-up in the World Golf Championships event in Shanghai, two other top 10s and only one finish out of the top 20. Not playing also gave him a rare case of restlessness. Koepka says he never watches golf on TV, though he made an exception for the Masters two weeks ago. “It was really fun as a fan to watch,” he said. “I’m usually out there grinding. You see a birdie go up on the board and you’re not thinking about how it affects the tournament because you’re playing. I wasn’t rooting for anybody, I was just watching as a fan. And I was glued. For the first time, I can definitely say I was into it on TV.” His contact with the golfing world was next to none. Phil Mickelson sent him a text during the Masters to wish him well and hope for a speedy recovery. He saw Dustin Johnson, one of his closest friends on TOUR, a few times at home in Jupiter, Florida. And he saw Tiger Woods on Thursday when Koepka went out to the Medalist to play. Koepka hit balls Monday and Tuesday of last week, and then rested to make sure everything felt fine. He played Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week before heading up to The Floridian to work with Claude Harmon on his wedge game. He didn’t have a partner for the Zurich Classic, a team event, because of his late decision. Koepka will play with Marc Turnesa, who also lives in South Florida. Turnesa’s lone victory was 10 years ago in Las Vegas. Koepka doesn’t see this as a tuneup. His game and his swing don’t feel much different from the last time he played, minus the pain in his wrist. “I know where I’m at. I’m already back,” he said. “I’ve played the game for 23, 24 years. Four months off, I’m not going to lose it.” He didn’t lose his clubs, either. Koepka found them in the garage.

Fantasy golf advice, One & Done: Valero Texas OpenFantasy golf advice, One & Done: Valero Texas Open

Since there isn’t a clear-cut favorite or a horse for the course who’s in blistering form entering the Valero Texas Open, the pressure is on front-runners to keep the opposition at bay. For those of you in this position, the concern is quieted if Billy Horschel is still on your board. The veteran of eight appearances hasn’t won the tournament, but he’s earned your better judgment with a pair of third-place finishes, one fourth and a T11 among six cuts made at difficult TPC San Antonio. The key word there is difficult. Only if you’re new to the PGA TOUR are you unaware how much the former FedExCup champion relishes a challenge. It feeds his confidence off the tee where he lets others make mistakes, but he’s even better with his irons. Oh, and he’s currently eighth in Strokes Gained: Putting. As a native of Florida, Horschel is most comfortable on bermudagrass putting surfaces, even if they’re overseeded, which is the case this week. The undulations are equalizers. His experience here could be the dagger. Among all of the non-winners at TPC San Antonio, he best fits the profile of what a champion embodies. If Horschel isn’t on his game, TPC San Antonio will get annoying and quickly. Its length demands driver, but if the big stick isn’t cooperating, it’ll take all of his patience to salvage a round. This is how Greg Norman intended it. The Shark was legendary tee to green, so it’s hardly a surprise that the course that he designed reflects what he did best. If you’re in pursuit and you’re going to assume that you’re going to get stymied by Horschel, you’re in terrific position. Lucas Glover, Jason Kokrak and Ryan Palmer are three strongmen who presents as threats. To select Glover is to invest almost entirely on his form throughout 2018-19. He missed the cut in his only prior trip to TPC San Antonio (in 2015), but two rounds of experience never hurts no matter the result. Kokrak fulfills the converging trends, if mildly. He’s never been more consistently strong over this most recent stretch of time, and he’s 5-for-7 at TPC San Antonio with a pair of top 15s, albeit it’s been four years since the latter. Palmer is an example of what happens when there isn’t synergy with the driver. He’s hung up five top-15s in this tournament, but he’s also finished outside the top 50 thrice, twice for a missed cut. That may seem academic and familiar for most veterans on any track, but we already know him to thrive or dive with the 1-metal. Whereas Horschel is the low risk-high reward, Palmer is the medium risk-medium reward. Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Matt Kuchar and Jordan Spieth are wasteful in our format this week. Stick with reliable sites for each. How Spieth performs this week will seriously impact his probability at the Masters despite one of the best modern records at Augusta National. Watch him this week specifically with that in mind. No doubt there’s a contingent that’s been holding its breath for the VTO’s all-time earnings leader, Charley Hoffman, to break out of his funk in time for TPC San Antonio. Because he hasn’t, at least enough, slot him with the same mindset as Palmer. Because the course will beat up a few notables, two-man gamers are advised to reach a bit for your tandem this week. Consider Aaron Baddeley, D.J. Trahan and Sung Kang. FUTURE POSSIBILITIES NOTE: Select golfers committed to the tournament are listed alphabetically. Future tournaments are sorted chronologically and reflect previous success on the courses on which the tournaments will be held in 2018-19. The numerical values in parentheses represent the order of relative confidence of where to use each golfer if multiple sites are listed (e.g. 1 for strongest, 2 for next-strongest and so on). To present weighted confidence in real time, numerical values will not change all season no matter how many tournament remain listed for each golfer. All are pending golfer commitment. FanDuel Sportsbook becomes PGA TOUR Official Betting OperatorFanDuel Sportsbook becomes PGA TOUR Official Betting Operator

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - The PGA TOUR and FanDuel Sportsbook agreed today on a multi-year content and marketing relationship designating FanDuel an Official Betting Operator of the PGA TOUR. By joining the TOUR's Official Betting Operator program, FanDuel will have rights in the United States to use PGA TOUR marks, rights to advertise within TOUR media and TOUR partner platforms, plus content and video rights allowing FanDuel to create pre-game and post-game betting programming, as well as distribution of highlights to users who have placed bets. Additionally, the PGA TOUR and FanDuel will collaborate to deliver odds-based content to fans via TOUR Digital Platforms like PGATOUR.COM and the PGA TOUR app. "We have long admired FanDuel's brand, product and marketing strategies as well as the leadership position it has taken since the legalization of sports betting in 2018," said Norb Gambuzza, SVP, Media and Gaming at the PGA TOUR. "We are excited to bring FanDuel into the PGA TOUR's Official Betting Operator program as we continue to engage new fans in this rapidly growing space." FanDuel Sportsbook has seen substantial growth in golf gaming: • Golf has recorded the highest single event handle on FanDuel Sportsbook over nine of the last 12 Sundays. • FanDuel Sportsbook's total golf handle in New Jersey in 2020 already has surpassed the total golf handle from 2019, even without [13] weeks of PGA TOUR competitions during the shutdown. Following the Supreme Court's decision that overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, the TOUR instituted an integrity program in collaboration with Genius Sports to protect its competitions from betting-related corruption. Later that year, the TOUR announced a global partnership with IMG ARENA to license its official, live scoring data to betting operators all over the world.
