His caddie, Brandon Davis, was the one who grabbed the ball for a drop — that cost Gibson a one-shot penalty (we’ll get to why in a second). That led Gibson to taking his putter head off and flinging it at Davis: Gibson later apologized: Davis, however, defended his actions: Davis pointed to rule 18-2 in the golf rulebook, which addresses the fact that a ball in play can’t be moved by a player, a caddie or his partner, and if it is, it’s a penalty.
