Who’s feeling confident at THE CJ CUP?

To have confidence, one must build it. It’s not the chicken and the egg, it’s the horse before the cart. That’s a fact of life. Still, this isn’t necessarily the objective at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BIRDIES as much as it is the by-product of the 72-hole, stroke play competition on Jeju Island in South Korea. Whoever prevails at The Club at Nine Bridges this week may not necessarily be the most confident, but he’ll probably be the most prepared. It’s within that context that gamers should pursue value. Precocious talent always figures out a way to earn that label, which is why there are always surprises, and it’s more likely to occur on the unknown putting surfaces that Nine Bridges is introducing, but it’s still smartest to embrace youth in doses. Experience already knows the formula for success of which the greatest portion is understanding how to minimize mistakes while facing mysterious variables. Jeju Island is known as the Hawaii of South Korea. It’s a popular vacation destination for natives especially, but first-time visitors shouldn’t have any trouble acclimating given the usual red-carpet treatment afforded to the best touring professionals on the planet. In other words, the primary challenge will be the golf course and whatever Mother Nature unleashed in the form of wind. The European Tour committed to a three-year stint for the Ballantine’s Championship at nearby Pinx Golf Club in March or April from 2008-2010. Graeme McDowell was the first champion, but that’s primarily fact over friction as the only correlation is that both courses are on Jeju Island. The only reason I throw it out there is to save you time if you were struggling to connect dots. So, it’s once again time to keep it simple. Below are only three identifiers if your aim is to complete a lineup in DFS or perhaps find a flier in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO. NOTE: Golfers inside the top or bottom 25 in each statistic on the 2016-17 PGA TOUR are listed only if they are scheduled to compete in THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES. Those who haven’t logged enough rounds to qualify for official rankings are omitted. * – In the Power Rankings Greens in Regulation One way to eliminate doubt is to create opportunity. While Nine Bridges is projected to yield many par breakers, the unknown variable of how much the wind will influence approach shots adds value to those attempts. Rank Golfer 2 *Kyle Stanley 3 *Paul Casey 6 Lucas Glover 11 Gary Woodland 14 Luke List 15 Chad Campbell 17 *Tony Finau 18 Stewart Cink 20 *Keegan Bradley 22 Graham DeLaet 23 Hudson Swafford 24 Jim Herman Lowest Apex Height This stat is making its debut in The Confidence Factor, and it’s the perfect time for it. With a new course on which a file of data will be generated, gamers are advised to invest in what they know site unseen. The 10 golfers below possess the lowest ball flights of all returning PGA TOUR members in the field. NOTE: Officially, apex height ranks golfers from highest to lowest measurements. So, the grouping below is sorted from the bottom of 190 who qualified for official rankings in 2016-17. Rank Golfer 189 Rod Pampling 188 Ollie Schniederjans 185 Ian Poulter 182 Robert Streb T177 Camilo Villegas 176 Charles Howell III 173 Wesley Bryan T171 *Russell Henley 170 Branden Grace 169 Lucas Glover Scrambling If the tournament evolves into a shootout due to soft turf, then scrambling still matters as saving par amid flourishes sustains momentum. If the wind dictates scoring, then this morphs into salvaging par to retain confidence. Rank Golfer 1 Ian Poulter 5 Chad Campbell 7 *Paul Casey 13 *Chez Reavie 15 Brian Harman T18 *Pat Perez 21 Adam Hadwin 25 Charles Howell III

McIlroy wins World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in playoffMcIlroy wins World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in playoff

SHANGHAI (AP) – Rory McIlroy did everything he thought he needed to win the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, and then Xander Schauffele made him do a little more. McIlroy delivered all the right shots in a playoff Sunday, hitting 4-iron to 25 feet for a two-putt birdie to beat Schauffele and win for the fourth time this year. It was McIlroy’s third World Golf Championships title, and first since the Dell Technologies Match Play in 2015. McIlroy played bogey-free on the weekend and closed with a 4-under 68. Schauffele, battling the flu all week, birdied the par-5 18th for a 66 to force a playoff in his bid to become the first repeat winner of the WGC-HSBC Champions. But Schauffele’s tee shot went left on the 18th in the playoff, in thick rough next to a bunker. He had to lay up, and he missed a 12-foot birdie putt. RELATED: Final leaderboard

PGA Tour golfer asks the one sad question on every Georgia fan’s mindPGA Tour golfer asks the one sad question on every Georgia fan’s mind

Kevin Kisner, a rising star on the PGA Tour and University of Georgia alum, is one of the many Georgia fans wallowing in sadness at the moment. Understandably so: Between the recent arrest of UGA player Elijah Holyfield (son of Evander Holyfield) and the increasing dysfunction in the front office, it’s been a dire few months for many fans, prompting Kisner to ask this question. Positive news? We’ll try to cheer you up, Kis, here are four things to *maybe* get excited about. You’ve got four five star recruits coming in! Isaiah Wilson, DeAngelo Gibbs, Richard LeCounte III, and Robert Beal. You’re 20/1 to win the National Championship this year — so you could bank some serious money if they actually

Horses for Courses: Workday Charity OpenHorses for Courses: Workday Charity Open

“Let’s play two!” was the famous cry of Cubs hall of fame shortstop Ernie Banks. Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, will become the epicenter of the PGA TOUR for the next two weeks as it will host the Workday Charity Open followed by the Memorial Tournament. The John Deere Classic usually takes place this week but has been put on hiatus until 2021. The Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village Golf Club will feature a field of 157 players and a purse of $6.2 million ($1.116 million/500 FedExCup points for the winner) to kick off the fortnight. Now stretching to 7,456 yards (Par-72), MVGC has added six new fairway bunkers and three new teeing grounds to add to the challenge and deviate from the norm. RELATED: Power Rankings | Sleepers | Expert Picks Tournament Director Dan Sullivan remarked last month that there will be a “clear distinction” between the two events. Tiger Woods has said over the years that these are the fastest greens on TOUR (non-major) but that’s not going to be the case this week. Slower speeds on undulating greens will also bring in new pin placements that will be new to the entire field. This will be the fifth week running that the average green sizes play less than 5,200 square feet and the third week in a row putting on Bent/Poa. While the teeing grounds and pin positions will rotate to alleviate heavy traffic, the course routing and challenge of avoiding 74 bunkers and 13 water hazards remains the same. The rough will be similar in length and species (Bluegrass) as it was last week in Detroit but will be a bit bushier for the 120-man invitational next week. Recent Winners at MVGC 2019: Patrick Cantlay, -19 T11 or better in EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY minus driving distance; missed tying Tom Lehman’s tournament record by a shot as he closed with 64, the low round on Sunday. Weather will be 10-20 degrees warmer this year. Notables: Kevin Streelman (4th) played his final 54 holes 13-under. … Marc Leishman (5th) posted all four rounds in the red. … Hideki Matsuyama, the 2014 champ, signed for 64 on Saturday. … 2017 champ Jason Dufner and Jordan Spieth shared seventh while Bud Cauley, Emiliano Grillo and Billy Horschel rounded out the top 10 (T9). … Only the top eight were 10-under or lower. 2018: Bryson DeChambeau, -15 (not entered) Notables: Byeong-Hun An and Kyle Stanley were the victims of a two-hole playoff. … Cantlay played in the final group and missed the playoff by a shot. … Joaquin Niemann (T6) co-led with Stanley after 36 holes. … Niemann and Matsuyama (T13) opened with 65 to share the 18-hole lead. … 2010 champ Justin Rose (T6) also put all four rounds in the red. … Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Patrick Rodgers (T8) rounded out the top 10. … Top 22 players were 10-under or lower. 2017: Jason Dufner, -15 Came from four shots off the lead to win by three over Fowler. … Ball-striking clinic as he led the field in GIR, SG: Tee to Green and SG: Approach. … Set the 36-hole record opening 65-65. … Posted 77 in Round 3 and still won comfortably. Notables: Thomas and Matt Kuchar (T4) nipped Stanley, Bubba Watson and James Hahn (T6) for the last spots in the top five. … Only three players 10-under or better. … Dufner, born in Cleveland, joined Jack Nicklaus as the only Ohio natives to win the event. The following should give you a decent road map on who understands the routing at MVGC. Next week, with the Memorial proper, I’ll dig deeper into the course horses when rough and slick greens return.
