TOUR Insider: Where in the world?

Xander Schauffele was born in La Jolla, California, but the newly minted Rookie of the Year is a melting pot of cultures that reaches far beyond Southern California Surfer. Taiwan. Japan. France. Germany. “I have a very international background, but I haven’t had the opportunity to travel a whole lot,â€ Schauffele said from Malaysia this week, where he will start his sophomore season at the 78-player, no-cut CIMB Classic at TPC Kuala Lumpur. “My dad’s half French, half German. My mom’s Taiwanese, grew up in Japan. It’s cool that golf has kind of allowed me to start here in Malaysia, then Korea, then China. “I’m just excited to start the year off kind of on a different foot instead of in the States.â€ The CIMB marks the first stop on the PGA TOUR’s three-week Asian swing, which will continue next week with the inaugural playing of THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES, South Korea, and finally the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in Shanghai. With two new international events, the TOUR’s 49-tournament FedExCup schedule includes nine tournaments in eight countries outside the United States. The schedule is increasingly reflecting the global makeup of the players themselves, guys like Schauffele or Belgium’s Thomas Pieters, who is also in the CIMB field and played golf for the University of Illinois. Davis Love III, 53, remembers when he was a rookie on TOUR and it was a big deal to make the odd flight to Japan for the Dunlap Phoenix or the Chunichi Crowns.  “They just seemed so far away,â€ Love said from the CIMB, “and now it’s just part of our TOUR.â€ It’s almost 10,000 miles from St. Simons, Island, Georgia to Malaysia, and Love mentioned the long hop more than once, as if he still couldn’t quite fathom that he’d come that far. Justin Thomas has nevertheless made Kuala Lumpur his home away from home, and the two-time defending CIMB champion is looking for a strong start to this, his “encoreâ€ season. Jordan Spieth won five tournaments and the FedExCup in 2015, then had to figure out a way to follow that up in 2016. Now it’s Thomas’ turn. Three weeks ago, he won the FedExCup, then the Presidents Cup and Player of the Year, his just desserts after a five-win season. Now what? “The Presidents Cup was unbelievable, very enjoyable, a great experience, a lot of fun,â€ Thomas said from Malaysia. “And then last week was just kind of really trying to get some rest. This is, I think, my eighth event in 10 weeks, so I’m getting a little bit tired.â€ The steamy heat won’t help. It never does. “When you’re out on the golf course, you’re always drinking, eating,â€ said Anirban Lahiri, who won the 2015 Malaysian Open at the course when it was still Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. “It’s not just the liquids, electrolytes, but you also need a lot of food. You burn through your energy really quickly here. This is one of those cheat weeks where you can pretty much eat anything you want because you can be sure that by 2 o’clock it’s all gone.â€ Schauffele admits he’s not used to the heat, or more specifically the humidity. Other than that, though, he’s not bothered to be so far from home. In fact, he’s so excited he’s already been asking for suggestions on what local delicacies to eat, and making up menus in his head. “I’m kind of a foodie when it comes to that stuff,â€ he said, “so I’m excited.â€ Pieters counts himself a fan of the local cuisine. “I really like Kuala Lumpur,â€ he said. “The food is great, people are so nice. Traffic’s bad, but the escort helps a lot.â€ Love said it’s incumbent upon the players to embrace the changes, just as he always has since he played his first full season on TOUR in 1986. He’s of the persimmon generation, and now he’s flying 10,000 miles to play a rubber plantation-turned-golf course where monkeys patrol the lush foliage. Two tournaments in Asia became three. One tournament in Mexico became two. The Dominican Republic’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, after a two-year run on the Web.com Tour, will be elevated to a TOUR event and debut March 19-25. The changes are so great, Love said, he’s even changing the way he talks about golf. “It really isn’t the U.S. tour,â€ he said. “It’s the PGA TOUR.â€

World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions canceled for 2022World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions canceled for 2022

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida – PGA TOUR officials, on behalf of the Federation of PGA Tours, HSBC and IMG, today announced that the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions will not be played as scheduled in 2022. The decision was made in conjunction with the China Golf Association due to ongoing COVID-19 related restrictions. “We have worked with all Tours, as well as the China Golf Association, on the viability of hosting the WGC-HSBC Champions this fall, but unfortunately the logistical implications forced the difficult decision to cancel the event,” said PGA TOUR Senior Vice President, International, Christian Hardy. “We are thankful for HSBC’s partnership during these trying times as we continue to navigate the changing COVID-19 climate.” With the cancelation of the WGC-HSBC Champions, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship will be played as a stand-alone event with full FedExCup points and an elevated purse of $6.5 million. The tournament returns to Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda, the week of Oct. 24-30.

The First Look: Valspar ChampionshipThe First Look: Valspar Championship

Five of the top-10 players in the world are scheduled to tee it up at the Valspar Championship, led by second-ranked Collin Morikawa. World No. 3 Viktor Hovland is looking to build off a tie for third last season, while Sam Burns – now ranked 17th in the world – is hoping to defend his maiden PGA TOUR title. FIELD NOTES: Morikawa, who already has five TOUR titles to his name, is set to make his Valspar Championship debut… Xander Schauffele and a pair of former FedExCup champions, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson, are the other top-10 golfers in the world scheduled to take on Innisbrook… Twenty of the world’s top-50 will be in the field… Jackson Suber, a star at the University of Mississippi and the 11th-ranked player in the PGA TOUR University Ranking presented by Velocity Global, is amongst the sponsor exemptions. Suber is from nearby Tampa, Florida… Jason Day, just two weeks removed from losing his mother to cancer, will tee it up. He returned to action at THE PLAYERS Championship… Abraham Ancer, who finished fifth in 2021, is set to return along with fellow International Presidents Cup hopeful Joaquin Niemann… Brooks Koepka is looking for his first win on TOUR since the WM Phoenix Open in 2021… Ryan Brehm, who won the Puerto Rico Open in the last start of a medical exemption, will be in the field after making his PLAYERS debut… Alex Fitzpatrick (brother of Matt Fitzpatrick, ranked 25th in the world) who is a celebrated golfer in his own right at Wake Forest also earned a sponsor exemption for winning the Valspar Intercollegiate. Alex is No. 5 in the PGA TOUR University Ranking presented by Velocity Global and a former member of Great Britain & Ireland’s Walker Cup team. Tommy Fleetwood, Martin Kaymer, and Bernd Wiesberger also were given sponsor exemptions… Sam Burns, Paul Casey, who won the Valspar in both 2018 and 2019, along with Adam Hadwin (2017), Charl Schwartzel (2016), Kevin Streelman (2013), and Luke Donald (2012) are some of the recent Valspar champions set to return. FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 FedExCup points. COURSE: Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead), par 71, 7,340 yards. The Copperhead Course – the second course built at Innisbrook – has long been considered a favorite by those on TOUR. Located just north of Tampa, this Larry Packard design is tree-lined and puts a premium on positioning off the tee. Sam Burns, the winner in 2021, had as complete an effort tee-to-green has anyone, which resulted in him finding the winner’s circle. Burns was fifth in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and third in Strokes Gained: Putting a year ago. The course, opened in the early 1970s, features a tough three-hole closing stretch called the ‘Snake Pit’ – two tough par-4s sandwiched between a bruising 200-yard par 3. STORYLINES: With several delays at THE PLAYERS Championship, it will be worth keeping an eye on the field leading into Thursday’s start at Innisbrook… Paul Casey was the first back-to-back winner in tournament history in 2018 and 2019… The tournament was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but will welcome back spectators at 100% capacity for the first time since 2019… The Valspar Championship puts a bow on the TOUR’s Florida Swing. 72-HOLE RECORD: 266, Vijay Singh (2004). 18-HOLE RECORD: 61, Padraig Harrington (1st round, 2012). LAST TIME: Sam Burns won for the first time on the PGA TOUR as the Valspar Championship returned to the TOUR’s schedule after being cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Burns, whose second-round 63 was tied for the low round of the week, won by three shots over Keegan Bradley. Burns had twice held 54-hole leads earlier in the season but was unable to convert both times. Bradley, meanwhile, was tied for the lead with six holes remaining in the final round but found the water with his tee shot on the par-3 13th, leading to double bogey. Bradley added another bogey on the par-3 15th and couldn’t mount a comeback. Despite a bogey on the 72nd hole, Burns’ 3-under 68 was more than enough to help him find the winner’s circle. Viktor Hovland’s 6-under 65 on Sunday was the round of the day, and that moved him into a tie for third with Cameron Triangle. Last year marked Hovland’s debut in Tampa. Abraham Ancer finished fifth alone, five shots back of Burns’ winning total. HOW TO FOLLOW Television: Thursday-Friday, 2 p.m.-6 p.m. ET (Golf Channel).
