Girardi becomes Yankees manager

The Yankees picked experience over popularity, Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, offering the manager's job, left vacant by Torre, to Girardi at the risk of watching Don Mattingly walk away from the franchise.

Joe Girardi has agreed to a three-year contract to manage the New York Yankees. The agreement to take over as Joe Torre’s replacement is worth an average salary of at least $2 million annually, a baseball official said Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced the deal.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Russ Ortiz (48) and catcher Guillermo Rodriguez confer on the mound during the third inning of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta, Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007. Atlanta won 6-3.

Tim Hudson was called for a couple of balks — nearly doubling his career total– and took a hard-hit liner off the leg. Otherwise, just another typical night for the Atlanta Braves’ ace. Hudson won his eighth in a row despite giving up Barry Bonds’ 759th homer and getting called for the first two balks of his NL career, pitching eight strong innings to lead the Braves past the San Francisco Giants…
