During group play at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Serbian forward Borisa Simanic was elbowed by South Sudan’s Nuni Omot. Simanic immediately went to the floor in pain. He was taken to the hospital and had emergency surgery that night.

We now know that Simanic had to have a kidney removed in a second operation, due to complications from the first surgery. Simanic is expected to remain in Manila for some time to recuperate.

Nuni Omot apologized for the incident, saying it was accidental.

“My apologies, I didn’t mean to make no type of a dirty play. I hope you have a speedy recovery. I pray for you, you’ll be in my prayers,” Omot said. “I’m not a dirty player, I’ve never been a dirty player. From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely apologize to everyone that’s watching and to the player especially.”

Team USA lost to Lithuania 110-104 in the FIBA World Cup on Sunday.

Team USA will play Italy in the quarterfinals of the tournament. And despite the loss, Team USA secured a berth to next summer’s Olympics.

Anthony Edwards lead the team with 35 points. Lithuania were lead by Mindaugas Kuzminskas, who had 14 points.

Lithuania outrebounded Team USA 43-27 in the game.

Canada beat Spain 88-85 in the second round of the FIBA World Cup, eliminating the defending World Cup champions.

Canada also qualified for next summer’s Olympics with the win.

Canada entered the fourth quarter of the game down 73-61. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored or assisted on Canada’s last 14 points of the game.

Canada are set to play Serbia in the quarterfinals.
