Jason Day withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard due to back injuryJason Day withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard due to back injury

ORLANDO – Jason Day withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard with what his agent called “some stiffness in his lower back on Friday. Related: Leaderboard Day, the 2016 champion here, was four holes into his second round and 3 over. Although he began the tournament with a birdie at the 10th hole Thursday, he struggled on his second nine, the front, and shot a 2-over-par opening-round 74. He had made three pars and a bogey in round two when he told Adam Scott and Brooks Koepka that he would not be continuing on.  “Jason had some stiffness in his lower back on the putting green before the round, said Day’s agent, Bud Martin. “Tried to play through it, but it stiffened up again later on the golf course. The news from Day comes after Tiger Woods, 44, announced last week that back stiffness would keep him out of the Arnold Palmer invitational, a tournament he has won eight times, most recently in 2013. (Friday, Woods said via his agent that he will also miss THE PLAYERS Championship next week.) Italy’s Francesco Molinari, the defending champion here, also withdrew with a back injury before the Arnold Palmer Invitational began. He was replaced by K.H. Lee.

Tiger Woods says he will miss THE PLAYERS ChampionshipTiger Woods says he will miss THE PLAYERS Championship

Tiger Woods, a two-time winner of THE PLAYERS Championship, announced via agent Mark Steinberg on Friday he will not tee it up at next week’s tournament at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. Woods personally informed PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan of the decision before news broke on Friday. “Back just not ready,” Steinberg said in a statement, as per ESPN and Golf Digest. “Nothing concerning, just not ready.” The announcement by the 82-time PGA TOUR winner comes amid a longer than usual layoff after he cited back stiffness and opted not to play in this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, a tournament he has won eight times, most recently in 2013. Woods, 44, would move out of a tie with Sam Snead for the all-time wins record with his next victory.  He hasn’t competed since a 68th-place finish at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera, where he has famously never won, on Feb. 16. He finished T9 at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines (where he’s won eight times as a pro) before that. It hasn’t been long, though, since the future World Golf Hall of Famer was in the winner’s circle. Woods won the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP last fall and went undefeated as playing captain at the Presidents Cup. He is 26th in the FedExCup, but did not play at the Arnold Palmer Invitational because of injury for the second straight year. Last year Woods bounced back from a neck injury to finish T30 at THE PLAYERS, and four weeks later rallied to win the Masters Tournament for his 15th major. Woods won THE PLAYERS in 2001 and 2013 and is 11th in the latest world ranking.
