Gary Neville has questioned Manchester United’s managerial plan, claiming that overlooking current assistant Michael Carrick to bring in an external caretaker manager “doesn’t make sense”. United sacked Jose Mourinho on Tuesday morning after a 3-1 humbling at the hands of Liverpool left his side struggling to even make the top four. Mourinho will receive a pay-off in the region of £24m.

Gary Neville has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino is the “outstanding candidate” to replace Jose Mourinho as Manchester United manager after the Portuguese was relieved of his duties on Tuesday morning. Former United defender Neville was asked on Sky Sports, for whom he works as a pundit, who he would choose as the next coach at Old Trafford and was in little doubt as to who Ed Woodward should be targeting. “I was fortunate enough to spend two or three days at Tottenham’s training ground and for me he just feels like the most ideal candidate,” Neville said.

Sean McVay has already shown he’s a great coach, but now he must prove he can make adjustments and get the Rams back on track after two straight losses.
