Monday Qualifiers: RBC Canadian OpenMonday Qualifiers: RBC Canadian Open

Lee McCoy has already had success north of the border in 2017. That continued Monday, when he qualified for the RBC Canadian Open. McCoy shot 67 on Monday at Heron Point Golf Links in Alberton, Ontario, Canada, then advanced out of a six-man playoff for one of the final two spots. Jhared Hack also made it out of the playoff, while Canadians Drew Nesbitt and Riley Wheeldon shot 66 to share medalist honors. McCoy, 23, is fourth on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada’s money list after winning this year’s Freedom 55 Financial Open by eight shots. The former University of Georgia standout finished fourth in last year’s Valspar Championship while still an amateur. He has played two TOUR events this season, finishing T41 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and T65 at the Valspar Championship. Wheeldon, who was teammates at the University of Louisville with 2017 Valspar winner Adam Hadwin, has played six events on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada this year, missing four cuts. He also played the RBC Canadian Open in 2013, missing the cut. The 26-year-old’s only other PGA TOUR start was a missed cut at the 2014 Farmers Insurance Open. He finished second on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada money list in 2013. Hack, 27, is 11th on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada money list thanks to two third-place finishes in six starts this season. He will be making the second PGA TOUR start of his career (2015 The Honda Classic, MC). Nesbitt will be making his PGA TOUR debut. 2016-17 Monday qualifiers Qualifiers: 83 Made cut: 24 (28.9 percent) Top-25s: 4 (4.8 percent) Top-10s: 0 Top finishes this season T11. Haggerty: Spooner deal represents his last chance with BruinsHaggerty: Spooner deal represents his last chance with Bruins

The Bruins and Ryan Spooner wisely came to a contract agreement on a one-year, $2.825 million deal just prior to the start of Wednesday’s arbitration hearing. Don Sweeney hasn’t yet taken a B’s player to arbitration during his three years running the Black and Gold, and it could have grown unnecessarily contentious with a player like Spooner if they’d been forced to point out his flaws as a player in the uncomfortable setting of an arbitration hearing. “It’s a fair deal for both sides in our opinion, said Spooner’s agent Murray Kuntz to CSN after the one-year contract had been agreed upon.  Now that Spooner has been signed to the one-year deal, it represents the last chance for the 25-year-old

Morning Skate: Markov’s time with Canadiens likely upMorning Skate: Markov’s time with Canadiens likely up

Ryan Spooner and the Bruins never made it to arbitration, settling on a one-year, $2.825 million contract ahead of Wednesday’s hearing, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the agreement.  Spooner and his camp sought a $3.85 million deal, while the Bruins submitted $2 million as their number. Settling outside of arbitration locks in the player at an affordable number while avoiding a potentially messy process.  Though Spooner now has a contract, his future with the Bruins isn’t much clearer than it was at season’s end. The 25-year-old center was a healthy scratch for the last two games of Boston’s playoff run,
