Heavily favored to beat the young and inexperienced Toronto Maple Leafs, the Stanley Cup-contending Washington Capitals weren’t supposed to be the team that flubbed and floundered at the start of the playoffs. Playing some of their worst hockey of the season, the Capitals fell behind by two goals early but came back to force overtime. Tom Wilson scored 5:15 into extra period for a 3-2 victory in Game 1 on Thursday night.
Zach Britton and the Baltimore Orioles made it a total loss for the Toronto Blue Jays. Britton escaped a nervy ninth inning and the Orioles handed the Blue Jays their sixth straight defeat, 2-1 on Thursday night. Toronto is off to a franchise-worst 1-8 start.
Josh Donaldson’s right calf issues just won’t seem to go away. Donaldson’s right leg started acting up again during Toronto’s 2-1 loss to the Orioles on Thursday night. He was forced to leave in the bottom of the sixth inning after pulling up lame while running to second base.
Pekka Rinne made 29 saves, Viktor Arvidsson scored in the first period and the Nashville Predators beat the Chicago Blackhawks 1-0 on Thursday night in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. Rinne’s second career postseason shutout sent Nashville to just its second playoff win in Chicago in seven tries. The Predators did not have a 1-0 victory during the regular season.

There will be nights, manager Terry Collins likes to say, when Yoenis Cespedes will not carry the Mets’ offense. The team just hasn’t seen many of them yet. Cespedes homered twice more in Thursday night’s game against the Marlins, giving him five long balls and nine RBIs in his last three games.
Dan Rooney’s natural character showed strength of humility
Dan Rooney, the powerful and popular Pittsburgh Steelers chairman whose name is attached to the NFL’s landmark initiative in minority hiring, died Thursday. From there, Dan Rooney oversaw NFL championships for a team that had never even played in a league title game. Over the decades he became one of the most powerful and innovative forces within the game, developing the Rooney Rule under which NFL teams are required to interview minority candidates for coaching and front-office positions.
