Quarterback Chad Kelly’s workout at Mississippi’s pro day ended prematurely because of a wrist injury. Kelly threw about a dozen passes at the Rebels’ indoor practice facility before leaving with what he said was a sprain. ”I tried pushing through it this whole week and it felt good,” Kelly said.

Adam Lind’s first swing as a member of the Nationals resulted in a pinch-hit, go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning, and Bryce Harper went deep on opening day for the fifth time in his young career, leading Washington past the Miami Marlins 4-2 on Monday. Stephen Strasburg (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs and six hits in seven innings, pitching out of the stretch the whole way. Catcher Matt Wieters singled off a soft liner ahead of Lind’s drive into the first row in right-center off reliever David Phelps (0-1) that made it 3-2.

Lawyers for former NFL star Aaron Hernandez began presenting their defense at his double-murder trial Monday with a fan who said Hernandez was polite and calm the night he is accused of gunning down two men after a brief encounter at a Boston nightclub. Hernandez’s legal team began calling witnesses after prosecutors rested their case Monday. The first defense witness was Antoine Salvador, a psychology doctoral student who met Hernandez inside the club and asked him to pose with him for a photo.
