NASCAR’s top series has had five different winners in five races this season, and as the Monster Energy Cup Series arrives at Martinsville Speedway and its first experience with stage racing rewarding drivers at three points during the race, the focus shifts to drivers who have yet to break through this year. Neither Jimmie Johnson, who has taken home nine of the iconic grandfather clocks that go to the race winner on NASCAR’s oldest, shortest and many say trickiest track, nor Denny Hamlin, the Virginia native with five victories on the .526-mile paper clip, has registered a top-five finish this season, but this is their place.

Defensive end Dion Jordan was released Friday by the Miami Dolphins, solidifying his status as a draft bust. Jordan started one game and totaled three sacks after being taken with the No. 3 overall draft pick four years ago. Jordan was reinstated by the NFL in July following a 15-month suspension for his latest violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.

Getting to what will be his first Kentucky Derby is on Antonio Sano’s mind almost constantly these days. Kidnapped on two separate occasions eight years ago in his native Venezuela – once for just a few hours, the other for 36 harrowing days, both times being freed after paying ransoms that he prefers not to disclose – the trainer and his family came to the United States to start their lives over in what they hoped to be a safer environment. Fast forward eight years, and the 54-year-old Sano has a horse named Gunnevera, the favorite for Saturday’s Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park and one that seems to already be among the top contenders for the Kentucky Derby.
