Most-Picked Players: Puerto Rico & Match PlayMost-Picked Players: Puerto Rico & Match Play

PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO – Puerto Rico Open This weekly recap column often focuses on surprises, so if that’s your thing, you’ll enjoy this week’s surplus. But first, the chalk. It’s not often when at least two golfers clear the 60-percent threshold in the same field, but it’s happened for the additional event in Puerto Rico. Worth their weight in grams, not gold – for sophomorically humorous reasons – are Graeme McDowell and Graham DeLaet. While Luke List (39.3 percent) is No. 2 in my Power Rankings, it would have been surprising if either international sat outside the top two in ownership percentage at Coco Beach Golf & Country Club. Quite simply, they carry the most cachet. The noticeable drop-off occurs after Ian Poulter at No. 5. Interestingly – and this is a surprise – Scott Brown at sixth populates less than one-quarter of the rosters (23.3 percent). His record (5-for-5, one win, two T5s, a T10) and scoring average (69.50) here are downright sublime. Meanwhile, a scuffling Bryson DeChambeau ranks just three slots lower at 16.7 percent and he’s making his tournament debut. Go figure. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Peter Uihlein is way down in 16th at 10.8 percent. The American who hones his craft abroad finished T6 in Puerto Rico in 2013 and arrived for this year’s edition on an 8-for-8 heater since December with three top 10s and another two top 20s. Further consider that Y.E. Yang checks in at 12th, rostered by 13.3 of you. The former PGA champion hasn’t recorded a top-15 finish on the PGA TOUR since 2011. He’s also made just three of his last 10 cuts worldwide, none going for a top 25. Notables not featured below include Boo Weekley (15th, 11.4 percent), Alex Cejka (18th, 9.7 percent) and David Hearn (30th, 3.8 percent). NOTE: Rob’s Rating refers to where our Fantasy Insider slotted a golfer in his Power Rankings. The round-robin format of the tournament is in its third year. While it guarantees that everyone in the 64-man field sees at least three days of action and while it benefits the best of the best because they can make more mistakes and still survive, the tournament is still a dance around land mines in our world. This is where you latch onto the proverbial approach that the season is a marathon and not a sprint. There’s zero sense in pulling a fantasy hamstring with two-thirds of the season remaining, including the end-weighted FedExCup Playoffs. Pacesetter Rory McIlroy lost his day-one matchup to ball-striking Dane Søren Kjeldsen. And suddenly, 12.6 percent of you are holding your breath and crossing your fingers. Overall, the top 10 most-picked went a combined 5-3-2 on Wednesday at Austin Country Club. Defending champion Jason Day (10th, 2.9 percent) withdrew early in his match with Pat Perez due to personal reasons. The Aussie is stepping away from competition indefinitely to support his mom who is having surgery for lung cancer.   Two of the wins among the top 10 were claimed by the only two non-members listed, Thomas Pieters and Tyrrell Hatton. Both were recommendations in Tuesday’s One & Done column because they’re non-members who, short of withdrawing, are going to put points on the board. The investment is in the insurance, not the prospect for a windfall. Notables outside the top 10 include Rafa Cabrera Bello (11th, 2.5 percent), Dustin Johnson (T16, 1.6 percent), Phil Mickelson (T16, 1.6 percent) and Tommy Fleetwood (18th, 1.6 percent). PGA TOUR Fantasy One & Done presented by SERVPRO – Puerto Rico Open The most common angles to invest in any golfer in any format are recent form and course history. Positive values in each feed the theory of converging trends. However, often overlooked is course fit based on recent form. There are any number of examples of golfers who failed to play well on any track over the years before suddenly connecting (or adapting) with what it takes to succeed on it. The vice versa also applies when a golfer reinvents or regresses in a particular area that was once a cornerstone component of his game. Then there’s the guy who doesn’t have course history upon which we can rely, so we’re often transfixed on recently dazzling results, never mind what it’s taken to get the ball in the hole. Wesley Bryan sits in the crosshairs of this phenomenon at Coco Beach Golf & Country Club. He’s atop the ownership percentages, but he didn’t crack my Power Rankings because his strength as a putter doesn’t project to matter as much as it did in recent weeks when he recorded three consecutive top 10s. Yes, good golf is good golf, and he warranted consideration in deeper formats, but it’s a lot to ask a PGA TOUR rookie to deliver in this one. Another relative surprise among the top 10 is another rookie, Dominic Bozzelli, he of a solo fifth at the CareerBuilder Challenge two months ago and a T3 at the Valspar Championship two weeks ago. You swing for the fences whenever you select most natural rookies. Case in point, look no further than the fact that he missed the cut in the other six events in his last eight starts overall. Sure, anything can happen and you might get lucky, but when you’re building a season to contend and even win prizes, stick with known value, veterans and a plan to review all factors that deserve attention in a given week. Remember, we’re always investing in the future, not the past.
