The AL East champions had been counting on Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello, David Price and newcomer Chris Sale to be their big three in the rotation, with Pomeranz, knuckleballer Steven Wright and left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez vying for the remaining two spots.

Marc Leishman of Australia holed a 50-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole to take the lead, and he stayed there with two tough pars to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational and earn a trip to the Masters. Leishman pitch from 45 yards short of the 18th green rolled out to 3 feet, and he made the par putt for a 3-under 69. Kevin Kisner had a three-shot lead at the turn, but he didn’t make a birdie over his final 11 holes.

The 56-year-old Inkster is preparing to captain her second U.S. Solheim Cup team and wants no part of a dual role in August in Iowa, though she still loves to play and compete on the tour and showed again she has the game to keep up with much younger players. ”I like the challenge of getting better and playing,” Inkster said.

There was some laughter heard outside the Blue Jackets’ locker room before it opened and Tortorella said he wanted his players to enjoy the night.
