Before throwing money around in free agency, the Browns tossed some big bucks at one of their own. Cleveland signed left guard Joel Bitonio to a 5-year contract extension Thursday, locking up a player the Browns feel can help their climb from a new low point following a 1-15 season. Although Bitonio’s past two seasons have been cut short by injuries, the Browns view him as one of the NFL’s best young interior linemen.

The Philadelphia Eagles acted quickly to get a speedy wide receiver they’ve sought for a while. Torrey Smith agreed to a three-year deal with Philadelphia on Thursday, less than a week after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers. The Eagles cleared cap space earlier in the day by releasing defensive end Connor Barwin, saving $7.75 million.

Safety Aaron Williams’ bid to resume his career in Buffalo following a second season-ending neck injury is over after the Bills released the starting safety. The Bills provided no reason in announcing the move in a one-sentence statement issued Thursday, hours before the NFL’s free-agency signing period opened. The decision comes two months after Williams’ father told Sports Betting News that his son was leaning toward continuing his career.

It’s the same night as the NCAA men’s national championship game, a night the NBA typically avoids scheduling games. The Blazers will play in Utah the next night, while the Wolves have to fly to the Bay Area to play the Golden State Warriors.
