Kurt Busch’s car could have been parked at an auto show. Monster had sponsored Busch, the 2004 NASCAR champion, in the Cup series the last two seasons. The initial buzz wore off when Busch slammed the car nose first into the wall early in NASCAR’s kickoff race, crunching the hood and leaving the squiggly ”M” claw flapping as the car skidded across the track and into the infield grass.

Ryan Palmer has reason to believe that better days are ahead, with his golf game and at home. Palmer made seven birdies Friday on another day of ideal scoring conditions at PGA National for a 5-under 65 that gave him a one-shot lead over Rickie Fowler midway through the second round of the Honda Classic. Starting a new year packed with uncertainty over matters far more important than golf, Palmer returned from a four-month break and missed the cut in his first four events.

The Atlanta Hawks have suspended starting point guard Dennis Schroder for one game for failing to return to the team on time following the All-Star break. Schroder returned to his native Germany for the break and posted a photo on his Twitter feed on Thursday in which he was holding his visa. The Hawks apparently were not satisfied with Schroder’s explanation for his late return.

Brantley took 120 swings in an outdoor batting cage Friday as several Cleveland coaches and medical director Lonnie Soloff watched intently. Brantley had been limited to soft-toss workouts, but he was able to take full cuts against normal pitches.
