Tiger Woods is trying to avoid something he has never done in all his years playing at Torrey Pines. In his return to the PGA Tour after a 17-month layoff to heal from two back surgeries, the objective now is simply to make the cut. Woods didn’t make it easy on himself when he played a six-hole stretch in 6-over par on the back nine of the opening round Thursday and shot a 4-over 76.

Two road games on successive nights, four points to end the first half of the season and the Edmonton Oilers find themselves tied for the Pacific Division lead. Andrej Sekera scored two goals and the surging Oilers extended their point streak to eight games by beating the San Jose Sharks 4-1 on Thursday. Edmonton ended San Jose’s six-game winning streak and grabbed a share of the top spot in the division heading into the All-Star break.

The return of Tiger Woods felt more like a celebration Thursday at Torrey Pines. Hundreds of fans lined up against the railing behind the 18th grandstand to watch Woods walk onto the first tee for his first PGA Tour event in 17 months. It wasn’t his worst score on the fabled South Course at Torrey Pines, though it was his highest score of his career in the first round of a new year.
