The Japan Golf Council, unaffiliated with the sport’s domestic governing body, the Japan Golf Association — said on Tuesday that it had sent a letter to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach proposing an alternative venue. The membership policy “is quite contrary to the spirit of the Olympic Games,” said Eiko Ohya, chairwoman of the council.

Patrick Marleau had a third period to remember: Four shots and four goals. Marleau’s four-goal flurry in a 13 1/2-minute span helped the San Jose Sharks beat the last-place Colorado Avalanche 5-2 on Monday night for their fifth straight win. The left wing became the 12th player in NHL history to score four goals in a period and the first since Mario Lemieux on Jan. 26, 1997, at Montreal, according to the NHL.

Zach Collins had 13 points and Gonzaga remained the nation’s only undefeated Division I team with an 83-64 victory over Portland in a game Monday night that was rescheduled because of a winter storm earlier this month. The Bulldogs are now 8-0 in West Coast Conference play.

After the Washington Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes 6-1 on Monday night to extend their point streak to 14 games, Alex Ovechkin joked that while everyone tells Orlov to shoot more, he prefers to dish the puck like Hall of Fame defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. ”Russian Lidstrom,” Ovechkin said with a smile.
