Injured Rory McIlroy has ruled himself out of action for a further month, targeting a return in Mexico on March 2, he told Fox Sports on Tuesday. Now the Northern Irishman aims to come back at the WGC Mexico Championship on March 2, more than six weeks after he fractured his rib on Jan. 13. “I’m trying to get back for Mexico,” said McIlroy.

Reigning FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy is hoping to make his return from a rib injury at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship, he said Monday on The Clubhouse podcast. The WGC-Mexico Championship is scheduled for March 2-5 at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City, Mexico. “I’d like to ease my way back in gently,” McIlroy said on the podcast. “Mexico is the perfect time to return because it’s four rounds, there’s no cut. I can see how everything feels. I’ll have a week off after that. All signs point toward Mexico being the one I could come back to and be 100 percent comfortable at.” McIlroy felt pain while playing his first event of 2017, the South African Open on Jan. 12-15. An MRI after his runner-up finish, a playoff loss to Graeme Storm, revealed a stress fracture in his ribs. He withdrew from his next two starts, at the Abu Dhabi Championship and Dubai Desert Classic, after receiving the diagnosis. “I can’t even run at the moment because if my feet hit the ground hard at all, the vibration in my rib cage kind of hurts,” McIlroy said. “I putted today for the first time. That’s the first little bit of golf I’ve done since we found out about this injury.” McIlroy said the injury likely happened in December while he was testing equipment and making a swing change. The four-time major champion, who is sponsored by Nike, has been trying new clubs after Nike announced in August that it would no longer make equipment. “My takeaway was getting a little behind me at the start of the swing so I was trying to make sure the club stayed in front of me on the way back. One of the drills I was doing, I was sort of reaching a little bit with my left arm and really extending,” McIlroy said. “I think the combination of trying to make that small tweak in my swing and obviously hitting a lot of balls, hitting a lot of drivers, making a lot of swings, … testing everything, the muscles basically said, ‘Alright, we’re tired. We don’t want to work anymore.’ That put stress on the joint, and the joint was like, ‘I don’t like this either,’ and the rib took the brunt of it.”
