Texas Motor Speedway is going to completely repave its 1 1/2-mile track and reduce the high banking in the first and second turns. The project announced Friday comes after both NASCAR weekends and the IndyCar race at Texas last year were hampered by rain. TMS President Eddie Gossage said the old asphalt has become porous, almost like sponge, making it difficult to dry in a timely matter.

North Carolina swingman Theo Pinson is finally set to make his season debut after October foot surgery. Coach Roy Williams said Friday he expects to play the junior in the 14th-ranked Tar Heels’ game with rival North Carolina State on Saturday night. Pinson’s return would be a major addition for the Tar Heels (13-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) since he is possibly the team’s top perimeter defender and a good passer, while his versatility was a significant factor in UNC’s run to last year’s ACC championship and the NCAA title game.

The Mariners landed another option for their pitching rotation on Friday, acquiring right-handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo from the Baltimore Orioles for outfielder Seth Smith. Seattle also will receive $2 million from the Orioles, equalizing the 2017 salaries of the players, in a deal that may solve concerns for both teams. ”Gallardo gives us the veteran presence that we have been searching for,” Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto said.
