Matt Schaub was still feeling the effects Wednesday of a concussion from a helmet-to-helmet hit against San Diego, and coach Gary Kubiak said he probably wouldn’t play Sunday against Oakland. Schaub, who has started every game for the Texans since an offseason trade with Atlanta, said his health has improved dramatically since Sunday.
Jets wide receiver Laveranues Coles has a concussion and it was uncertain Wednesday if he’ll play in New York’s game against Washington this weekend. Coach Eric Mangini addressed Coles’ injury during a conference call with Redskins beat writers. Mangini didn’t mention Coles in his earlier news conference with Jets writers.
Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom sustained a slight concussion in an automobile accident, team spokesman John Black said Wednesday. Pacers forward Jermaine O’Neal sat out Indiana’s regular-season opener against Washington on Wednesday night because of a hyperextended left knee. O’Neal, a six-time All-Star, was hurt Oct. 8 when he collided with Shawne Williams during practice. “Jermaine practiced today, but he’s not ready to play,” Pacers coach Jim O’ Brien said.
The Houston Rockets on Wednesday extended guard Luther Head’s contract through the 2008-09 season. The 6-foot-3 Head has averaged 9.8 points and 2.6 assists since the Rockets drafted him 24th overall in the 2005 draft. Last season, Head shot 44 percent from 3-point range (177-for-401), the third-best single-season percentage in team history.
