A rare Monday practice for ColtsA rare Monday practice for Colts

The Indianapolis Colts spent a rare Monday back at the team complex. Usually, at this point in the season, players get an extra day off as a reward for winning games. Not this week, and certainly not after blowing a chance to become the NFL’s last remaining unbeaten team for the third straight year. “You lose, you’ve got to come to work,” middle linebacker Gary Brackett said.

Packers safety Nick Collins will miss several games with a knee injury after making an awkward tackle. “We all figured the worse the way he went down,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday. “It’s going to be at least a couple of weeks.” Collins sprained a ligament in his left knee on Sunday in Green Bay’s 33-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs as the Packers improved to 7-1.

A horse that didn’t sell overshadowed the ones that did Monday, the first day of Keeneland’s Breeding Stock Sale. Through the afternoon auction, Fleet Indian drew the day’s highest bid of $3.9 million, but that didn’t quite meet the reserve to pry her away from Taylor Made Sales Agency. “She was the best mare in the sale,” said Duncan Taylor, one of the owners.

British golfer Alison Nicholas holds up the U.S. Women's Open trophy after winning the premier women's golf event in North Plains, Ore., in this Sunday, July 13, 1997 file photo. Alison Nicholas has been named captain of Europe's Solheim Cup team as replacement for Helen Alfredsson and aims to stop the United States winning the title for the third time in a row in 2009. A six-time player on the team and twice a winner, Nicholas was assistant captain to Catrin Nilsmark when Europe last won the title in 2003. But she has a tough task when the two teams meet at Rich Harvest Farms, Sugar Grove, Illinois with the Americans defending the title they held on to at Halmstad, Sweden, in September.

It had been 17 months since Stephen Ames last won on the PGA Tour. He doesn’t remember it being such a grind. His last victory came at The Players Championship last year, where Ames made double bogey and still blew away the toughest field in golf by six shots at the TPC Sawgrass. This one came across the street from the Magic Kingdom on a resort course, where the sun cast silhouettes of Mickey Mouse…

Momoko Ueda decided to focus on her game instead of waiting for other players to stumble. It paid off Sunday with a victory in the Mizuno Classic. “I used to wish for (the) other player to make a mistake. When I was thinking like that, I got nervous whenever they made a good shot,” Ueda said. She became the tournament’s first Japanese winner in nine years, closing with a 5-under 66 that included a…
