The Giles brothers reunion with their hometown San Diego Padres lasted only one season. Second baseman Marcus Giles, the younger brother of right fielder Brian Giles, was put on waivers Friday. The Padres owe Marcus a $500,000 buyout of his $4 million option. Giles opened as the Padres’ leadoff hitter but began slumping in May.
The Dodgers may return to the Los Angeles Coliseum, site of “Moon Shots,” for one game next season. If it works out, the game will be part of the team’s 50th anniversary in Los Angeles. “We’re just hoping to add it to a list of things we want to do to celebrate,” Dodgers spokeswoman Camille Johnston said Friday.

Martin Biron stopped 38 shots and Mike Richards had a short-handed goal to lift Philadelphia to a 2-1 win over Boston on Saturday in a game marred by Flyers defenseman Randy Jones’ ferocious hit on Bruins center Patrice Bergeron. Bergeron lost consciousness and was taken from the ice on a stretcher during the first period after he was hammered into the boards by Jones.
Alexander Semin signed a two-year, $9.2 million contract extension with the Washington Capitals on Saturday. The extension, which begins next season, rewards Semin for his productivity since returning from his NHL hiatus in Russia. The 23-year-old right wing set career highs in goals (38) and assists (35) last season with the Capitals.

Marek Svatos tied it at 2 with 4:15 left in regulation. Joe Sakic set up the winner and also scored for Colorado to reach the 1,600-point mark.
The Detroit Red Wings started fast and didn’t let up. Valtteri Filppula scored his first goal of the season and also had an assist, and Tomas Holmstrom added a goal and an assist in Detroit’s 5-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday night. Henrik Zetterberg scored and has a point in all 11 games this season, and Andreas Lilja and Kirk Maltby also scored in Detroit’s fourth straight victory.
