Francona makes right moves in Game 3Francona makes right moves in Game 3

New leadoff batter Jacoby Ellsbury was on second base all night. David Ortiz played flawless defense and drove in the first run. Mike Lowell hit a two-run single in Boston’s big inning. After all that fuss about his Game 3 lineup, Red Sox manager Terry Francona definitely made the right moves. Now, his team is one win from its second World Series sweep in four seasons.

Barbaro’s owners endured more tragedy at the track when the colt they bred broke down Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup — the second year in a row thoroughbred racing’s big event was marred by a fatal accident. On a day when even casual fans tune in for the sport’s version of the Super Bowl, European star George Washington broke his leg in the stretch and was immediately euthanized.

Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense has no excuse in final raceKentucky Derby winner Street Sense has no excuse in final race

Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense closed out his career Saturday with a disappointing fourth in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Monmouth Park. Jockey Calvin Borel had the colt perfectly positioned for a rail-skimming victory, just like his win last year in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Street Sense, the 5-2 favorite, had a wide opening in the lane but lacked a finishing kick.

Curlin takes Breeders’ Cup Classic; George Washington euthanized on trackCurlin takes Breeders’ Cup Classic; George Washington euthanized on track

Jockey Robbie Albarado, left, celebrates after riding Curlin to victory in the Breeders Cup Classic horse race at Monmouth Park on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007 in Oceanport, N.J. Hard Spun (8), with Mario Pino up, finished second. Street Sense, far right, with Calvin Borel up, trails.

Curlin has now beaten the Kentucky Derby winner twice, the leading older horse twice and avenged his most recent defeat. With one emphatic victory against his toughest rivals in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, Curlin likely ran away with Horse of the Year honors in a sensational championship season.
