The first Breeders’ Cup Friday drew 27,803 to rain-soaked Monmouth Park. The Breeders’ Cup expanded to 11 races and added a second day this year. The remaining eight races, including the $5 million Classic, are Saturday. “Friday’s card more than exceeded our expectations,” said Dennis Dowd, Monmouth’s senior vice president.

The Detroit Red Wings started fast and didn’t let up. Valtteri Filppula scored his first goal of the season and also had an assist, and Tomas Holmstrom added a goal and an assist in Detroit’s 5-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday night. Henrik Zetterberg scored and has a point in all 11 games this season, and Andreas Lilja and Kirk Maltby also scored in Detroit’s fourth straight victory.
