Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo must wish he could face the Washington Capitals more than once this season. Luongo extended his winning streak against Washington to 10 games by making 26 saves Friday night, and Taylor Pyatt scored twice, leading the Canucks to a 3-2 victory over the Capitals.
Tomas Plekanec had two goals and two assists to help the Montreal Canadiens beat the Carolina Hurricanes 7-4 on Friday night. Montreal scored five power-play goals, four in the first period, en route to its third straight victory. The Canadiens have scored eight of their NHL-best 16 power-play goals in two games in Carolina, both wins.
Right wing Dustin Brown, playing his fourth NHL season at only 22, agreed to a six-year extension believed to be worth around $19 million with the Los Angeles Kings, putting him under contract through the 2013-14 season. “Dustin is an integral part of what we are building here with the Kings,” general manager Dean Lombardi said Friday.
Denver Avalanche defenseman Jordan Leopold will have wrist surgery and be sidelined about two months. The team said Friday that Leopold was hurt in the third period of Colorado’s 4-2 victory over the Oilers in Edmonton on Tuesday night. He fractured his wrist in February, his third significant injury last season.
Detroit forward Kris Draper, a winner of three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, signed a three-year contract extension on Friday. The 36-year-old Draper has five goals through the first 10 games of his 14th season with Detroit. Draper won the 2004 Selke Trophy as the league’s best defensive forward and represented Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics.
Alexander Frolov was one of the players the Los Angeles Kings were depending on to turn their fortunes around this season. When he faltered coming out of the gate, so did they. On Thursday night, Frolov scored in his third consecutive game following a season-opening eight-game drought. His go-ahead goal, along with Jason LaBarbera’s 29 saves, helped the Kings beat Dallas 2-1 and snap a nine-game…
Dan Ellis went more than three years between NHL starts. He probably won’t have to wait nearly as long for his next one. Ellis stopped 20 shots for his first career shutout, helping the Nashville Predators snap a six-game losing streak and beat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-0 Thursday night. Jordin Tootoo and Jerred Smithson scored for Nashville, which was one loss from tying a franchise record.
The Rangers rely on Henrik Lundqvist to lock things down on defense. They just never counted on Nigel Dawes to supply all the offense. Lundqvist made 22 saves in his second shutout in three games, and Dawes broke New York out of its scoring slump with two goals Thursday night to lift the Rangers to a 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils.
Red Wings goalie Dominik Hasek will be out indefinitely with a sore hip, meaning Chris Osgood will start Friday against San Jose. Hasek, 42, made 13 saves in Detroit’s 3-2 win over Vancouver on Wednesday. He is 4-2-1 this season with a 2.68 goals-against average. The Red Wings called up Jimmy Howard from their Grand Rapids AHL affiliate to back up Osgood.
